I have this need which anyone with lots of old lto3 tapes would love to have and I am surprised there has not been any vendor jumping all over it.

I need to convert several hundred lto3 tapes to lt05s of course it would be necessary to be able to copy more than one lto3 tapes to a single lto5 or nothing would be gained.  One problem I see is that there may be a end of tape problem when one tape is finished and the other started.  It would also be neccessary that BE could restore a file or directory.   I know I jumped over a few steps like cataloging etc. but this is the basic concept.  It is not feasible to restore the lto3s and then archive to lto5.  The length of time it would require to restore lto3(s) and then re archive to lto5 begs for a standalone type solution.  That and the need to run the library realtime leaves precious little time which can be devoted to this task so it becomes a never ending ground losing battle.  Maybe someone knows if this is done by one of the vendors already but my searches have come up empty.  Obviously Symantec would be needed to work the end of tape problem.

I can't speak for the best way to handle this with BE, but if these were NBU tapes it would be extremely easy.  Make a volume pool with all your LTO5 tapes in it, list and select all images on each LTO3 tape you want to duplicate (more than likely easily scripted, although I've never personally written this script), then simply run a duplication job for the images on the LTO3 tapes to the volume pool full of LTO5 tapes.

Thanks for the information.. The library we have now will not be available to do this task as it is busy archiving new data. So, I would need to start from the ground up.  PC, tape library, BE, etc.  Where is that magical device that can do it all so that a operator can load the tapes and walk away..

I do appreciate you response Jed.  Do you know your counterpart in BE world that I might be able to contact.  I have been searching for an answer all over the net.  No Dice!  Thanks.

I'd been looking for the same but in nbu 6.5 environment.  Thanks Jed for your response to the OP.

I tried your steps to duplicate lto3 images to lto5 tapes but the duplication jobs use lto3 tapes still.  I did select the volume pool that has lto5 tapes only but duplication job only takes lto3 tape.

Any suggestion?
