This may be of interest to those who vote for or against this Idea: Symantec Security Response has recently (November 2011) released a new white paper on "Windows 8 Security" (http://www.symantec.com/content/en/us/enterprise/media/security_response/whitepapers/windows_8_security.pdf)
With thanks and best regards,
Mick
Voted Up Mick....

Thumps UP
early support is a very good idea for that =)
Voted up.
That will be a first! I remember waiting 6 months or more AFTER XP Service Packs. With the release of Windows 8 to corporate customers within the next few months there's not much time for "Early".
i agree. it is very hard to get new technology rolled out when the software required for it is not certified.
I voted for this, although I'm not sure why we customers should need to "vote" for Windows 8 support.
Jon
I'm with J.Bommer. Normally it should be a basic thing to work on support for the newest software released.
Windows 8 hasn't been "released" yet. You should only be using it in a controlled test environment. It was only just released to manufacturing for driver development.
If your interested in Windows 8 support, sign up for the SEP 12 RU2 beta:
https://symbeta.symantec.com/callout/?callid=1D5D3DD349C248E69B13977DA4DBF426
when is it scheduled for release?
Been out for a while now :)
So it's production ready or still BETA?
It is still Beta but Windows 8 isn't ready for production yet. You probably won't find all of the drivers since it was only released to the hardware manufacturers recently.
Upon installing Windows 8 (W8) on top of Windows 7 (W7), it said SEP12.1 (SEP) was not compatible. It gave the option to either uninstall SEP or stop installing W8 (no option to ignore and continue). I uninstalled SEP, and continued installing W8. Afterwards, I attempted to install SEP and it was successful. However, upon the next reboot, W8 gave me a boot error and attempted to fix it. Twice. Upon the third automatic reboot, it gave me the option to system restore back to the time before I installed it.
If you are installing W8 on a machine with an existing OS, I suggest a dual boot. Make a 30GB partition and boot-install from DVD onto the partition. Upon completion, and after each boot, W8 will let you select wich OS to boot from, so you can continue using W7 with SEP, while also booting from W8 without SEP, or until they start working together. (Note: If you attempt to install W8 on top of W7 partition, you can not uninstall it!)
Installing SEP12.1 on Windows 8 -
Attempt 1: After running SEP 12.1 from DVD: (E:\Setup.exe) autorun.inf
After choosing [Get help online]:

Attempt 2: After running SEP 12.1 from DVD: (E:\SEPx64\Setup.exe)

... more to follow ...
Hey, why not start with SEP 12.1 RU2 Beta? It actually supports Windows 8.
You won't need "more to follow". There is no support yet for Windows 8. You can try the beta program for the next version of SEP and let us know how it goes.
Very well, installed beta version 12.1.1959.1959:

Few errors after install/restart, fixed with the "Fix" button.

So far so good, but have noticed a lot of pop-up notifications coming from the shield icon on the taskbar:

(this is becoming noticed more frequenty than RU1) (and very annoying)
- will try to capture them all as they appear:
Still getting a lot of "Traffic has been blocked from this application: NTOSKRNL.exe svchost.exe dasHost.exe
This will remove the annoying popups, however will not show any network attacks.
You get this popup with other OSes as well. There is a paper out that you need to create an exclusion for svchost.exe. I think I clicked on one of the log entries and was able to crete the exclusion from right there. This was on 12.1.1 running on a Windows Server 2003.
Okay, I installed SEP 12.1 on my 64 bit Win 8 Enterprise Edition last week and I deselected the Application and Device control option during install. All seemed to go fine until reboot. Hosed my system. I would recommend against this risky venture until SEP is officially announced as being compatible with Win 8.
I agree, but only because I believe Symantec should be more responsive to changes in technology.
I believe Windows 8 will be another Windows ME or Windows Vista. Windows 8 and Server 2012 are terrible, and we will not be migrating to either Windows 8 or Server 2012.
Windows 8 and Server 2012 have been released - to those with Enterprise Agreements. And, yes SEP 12.1 RU1 MP1 does hose both of them.
Probably has something to do with that gawd-awful, and butt-ugly Start Menu. Just when things were starting to look good on the desktop, we get these plain, ugly squares as a start menu, and have to move the mouse over to some corner or another to be able to do stuff. Takes more mouse clicks to get to my apps. I could clutter up the desktop or taskbar, but then it would just look like that ugly start menu...
EKwang and Dsmith: SEP 12.1 RU1 MP1 does NOT support Win8.
Also, we have an enterprise agreement and we don't have WIN 8. Are you sure it is released? As far as I know it is only released to manufg (RTM).
If you want to be part of the beta test for Win 8 Symantec support, some of the posts have the link for being part of the beta test.
hi - Windows 8 RTM has also been released to Microsoft Customers a few weeks ago:
August 15, 2012: Windows 8 was made available to download for MSDN, TechNet and DreamSpark subscribers.
August 16, 2012: Windows 8 was made available to Software Assurance customers
Seems to be working more or less here. Haven't got GUI to work yet. Trying to get the Beta
Archive Shuttle - EV NearSync - PST Flightdeck - FSA Migrator
I like how the whitepaper says "Security software vendors such as Symantec will be in the best position to detect, analyze, and prevent those attacks on customer’s machines."
I hope Symantec can release a version that supports Windows 8 by October--otherwise this seems like a stretch. Full x64 support never came for SEP11, which in my mind means Symantec was extremely slow to truly support Windows 7. It needs to be much more timely with Windows 8.
Have been running SEP version 12.1.1959.1959 (beta) on W8 RTM for a month now and everything has been running normally, updating properly. Had annoying popups in the beginning, but once i unchecked "Intrusion Prevention notifications" have had none since.
On a side note, install classic shell [http://classicshell.sourceforge.net/] on W8 and it will operate just as good as W7 does. No touchscreen required.
Yep!
Never want to be without classicshell in W8! :)

How do I get access to the beta? Wannted get this up and running! :)

Beta Testing Opportunity
So, it looks like SEP 12.1 RU2 will work with the RTM version of Win 8 Enterprise, is that correct or did I read the announcement incorrectly?
Eric
This article states that SEP 12.1 RU2 will support Windows 8 (and Windows 2012).
http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?pag...
Windows 8 has reached RTM, SEP 12.1 RU2 shouldn't be far behind.
I went to the Beta site for SEP 12.1 RU2 but don't see a download for the Windows client. Am I missing something or is it necessary to install the server to get the client?
I haven't been there personally, but if the server package is the full package (over a gigabyte, I believe), then it contains the client packages as well. You can find them under the folder "Packages". If you just want the stand-alone client, you can copy the *.dat file out of the "packages" folder, and then rename the copy to .ZIP and extract.
Not 100% sure if the SEP Server download your looking at contains the client packages, but I would guess it does.
That worked thanks Ghent!
So, Windows 8 has been out for over two months now for Software Assurance customers. Has anyone heard when the next version of SEP will be released. Not the beta, but the released upgrade?
It should be avail. in the next couple of weeks.
I think this month is nearly 99% that it will be available for download.

Don't forget to mark your thread as 'SOLVED' with the answer that best helps you.<&a
Still not available for those of us licensed for Protection Suite. It's only been two weeks though... I'm sure it will show up in the next month or two.
I did get it with a temp license. What a pain. It only took two days to get a temp license, and that's only because I didn't want to spend hours on the phone with support.
hi - has finally shown up - have run into issues upgrading from 12.1RU1 to 12.2RU2 [backed up beforehand] - the Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager service is not running and won't start, even after rebooting the server.. anyone else had this?
Did you shutdown the SEPM service prior to the upgrade?
SEPM install/upgrade issues are a different animal altogether. As much as I don't like doing it, I'd call support for this one.
So sorry to see you having an issue, Moznz. I suggest you start a new thread that opens with details describing your issue with the MSI and SEPM logs attached. It's much more likely to attract the people that could help you out than using this old thread.
hi - we ended up creating a job for the failed upgrade when we got back at the start of this week from holidays.
Support is coming from the wrong time zone for us at the end of each day or overnight when we're not here.
The last we heard from the Symantec agent was over 24 hours ago.
as a result it has many weeks since our Endpoint Proection Clients recieved a recent AV definitions update.
Please could you escalate this for us? The job number is 03355337
We had no issues. I backed up the database in case of an issue running maintenance on it. Then installed over the top and had no issues. It ran the install, followed by the conversion (starts just after the install part finishes) and everything was clean.
Voted !
