This is really strange.  For the past year, we have engaged Symantec tech support in trying to figure out why the Tape Drive drops "offline" at the start of a backup session.  The errors are always the same - LSI SAS Event id 11 - pointing to the SAS controller as the culprit.   We are using an HP 222 SAS controller, the recommended one for the HP Proliant 350 G8 server and the LTO5 internal tape drive.

I would normally just put a new controller in and forget about it, but my curiosity got the better of me.  in the past year, this "event" has happened only 6 times.  5 of those times, the date (yes, the date, as in 7'th of January..) was always divisible by 7.  It was almost like something runs weekly, and sometimes knocks the tape drive offline.  (The office has starterd a betting pool to see when the next "divisible by seven" date occurs when it dies...)

Symantec engineers have connected to the server, looked at log files, captured statistics, etc... Everything appears fine, except for the Event ID 11's.

In all cases, the solution to the tape drive going offline is to restart the BE services.  That's it.  No power off, no reset, no server restart - just restarting the BE services.  Then it runs for another 1 to 12 weeks with no problems.

The solution to this problem is so simple (restarting the services) that we just thought we'd pass this along, in case anyone else has experienced this.  Maybe Symantec can figure this out.

Did you ever find the source of the problem? We are getting the same thing...

No.  It happens so infrequently, everyone here is now trained to restart the backup services which solve the issue for another 2 to 8 weeks.  Latest SP didn't help.
