Warnings about maintenances

Hi,

I am sure we all really appreciate how Connect is maintained. Personally I find it as one of the best designed interactive places on the Internet. It is easy to use, clear and fast.

What I would like to suggest though is to create on a main Connect page a small box for maintenance/down information from administrators. I fully understand that from time to time the site should be switched off for a while. However, it could be nice to advertise such down times, maybe even in advance, so people would not try again and again to launch connect pages, especially while not the whole site is down but for example only the content of forums/posts cannot be viewed. This situation may make people think something is wrong with their own connection/browser.

This idea may also decrease workload for Connect support as they will not have to replay to email asking what is wrong.

If you agree, please vote.

Good idea.

Any advance notice of possible service impact would be greatly appreciated!

Notifying all the users

Notifying all the users before maintainance or a banner indicating that information on the home page will be a good option.

Oooooh...so the site is

Oooooh...so the site is actually under maintenance when my browser starts to redirect itself endlessly? (I hope that's what y'all are talking about and that my computer doesn't actually have a virus lol)

I like the banner idea!

The re-directs are probably due to the "recent"

changes in the KB search

https://www-secure.symantec.com/connect/forums/net...

Basically if you follow a link to an old TechNote document or some such it will re-direct to its new location.

No man...I'm not talking

No man...I'm not talking about redirecting an old document to it's new location...I guess I must have a virus then lol.

What used to happen (hasn't happened recently) is that I'd open my bookmark to Connect and it looks like it's redirecting to another page, and the URL keeps changing between 2 (maybe 3...I don't remember) different links. That would just keep happening indefinitely and the same thing happened when I tried to access Partner Net.

I figured the traffic was really high or it was just maintenance time 'cause when I tried later it worked. As I said though, it hasn't happened in a while

Ok!

Do have issues sometimes connecting or re-loading pages, but never noticed any re-directs...

Maybe you need to look at some of Symantecs AV products? laugh

Lol I have SEP11 and scan

Lol I have SEP11 and scan every week =P

I'm pretty sure it's no virus though...I figure twas a one time thing. Especially since all the incidents were within the same timespan and it doesn't happen anymore...if it was a virus or something of the like, then SEP picked it up cool

A good start!

Never even thought about using this area!

Is this just an interim "fix" or permanent or an unrelated coincidence?!

***EDIT*** 21st Jan
Even better, some subtle changes to Connect & the message has even got a gold star next to it now.....

Hi Andy--When we're aware

Hi Andy--When we're aware that there will be hiccups on the site, we always try to give you advance notifications. (Sometimes, those hiccups happen before we have a chance to post a notice.)

This is usually the area we'll post the notifications. :)

But, yes, the idea above did help us to remember to post it early.

Thanks,

Leslie
