There should be a definitive document to clearly spell out which backup scenarios are supported when one uses a VM for the media server.  It should also separate the support scenarios for both VMware and Hyper-V.

A couple of scenarios which requires clarification are

1) or VMware, there is a document stating that pass-thru to a tape library attached to the host is supported as an alternative configuration.  However, it is silent as to whether this support includes ESX 5.x

2) if the virtualised media server is backing up to an iSCSI disk.  Is this supported?

3) is access a device on a Hyper-V 2012 host via virtual fibre channel adaptor supported?

There are many more scenarios.

As far as I know, VMware 5.x has done away with SCSI passthrough. However, on your other points, I have seen conflicting information given from employees.

Some say a virtualised server is supported, others say not. The TN freely available on their support site states that this is an alternative configuration. A single, concrete answer would be best so that the correct advice can be given on the forums.

Thanks!
