Backups to HP LTO Ultrium 4 tape drive fails with “A hardware error occurred” error when using UMD.
Created: 23 Jun 2011
Backup job targeted to HP LTO Ultrium 4 tape drive fails with the error given below when User mode drivers are used.
Storage device "HP 0001" reported an error on a request to write data to media.
Error reported:
The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error.
V-79-57344-34029 - A hardware error occurred.
Workaround:
Force Kernel Mode Drivers (KMD) for the tape drive. To force KMD set the following registry key:
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Symantec\Backup Exec For Windows\Adamm\DioDrivers to "0xffffffff"
"0xffffffff" means - Do not use new device discovery. This disables the new device discovery process and as a result forces KMD.
