Corrupt recovery points are not automatically removed from backup destination when using Symantec System Recovery (SSR) 2011.
Problem
Corrupt recovery points are not automatically removed from backup destination when using Symantec System Recovery (SSR) 2011.
This is caused by a client machine being disconnected from the network during an active backup and when the backup is writing to a network share. SSR will fail the backup, because the backup destination is no longer available, but the resulting recovery point is corrupt due to the backup being interrupted.
This can cause the following issues:
Corrupt recovery points using up uneccessary space on the backup destination
Corrupt recovery points causing the backup set to be 'broken' (i.e. the recovery point 'chain' is broken)
Solution
The only workarounds that are currently available are:
Manually delete the corrupt recovery points
Educate end users to not disconnect their machines from the network during an active backup
