When using SAN transport mode, backup of a VMware virtual machine may report unable to copy the virtual machine disk

When using SAN transport mode, backup of a VMware virtual machine may report the following error:
V-79-57344-38264 - Unable to copy the virtual machine disk using the VMwareVixDiskLib. VixDiskLib_Read() reported the error: One of the parameters supplied is invalid

For me, this error occurs well into the backup (almost at the end). Also, I have seen several instances where when the backup is going slowly for whatever reason (sub 2000MB/min), the job will complete successfully, however when it is going fast it will produce this error.
Here is what it looks like from my end:
