1.     Summary

This article details the steps I took to install the Symantec Management Platform (SMP) 7.1 on a Windows 2008 R2 SP1 VM, with 8 CPU's, and 16GB Ram.   These steps worked flawlessly for me, but should be reviewed with your architect first to ensure they will work for your environment.  Some steps may be modified based on your requirements, so please keep that in mind when reading through this article.

Ziggy,

Thanks for taking the time to put together such a detailed article. Could you define step 2.1 Enable AD Browsing. If it isn't to much to ask how about an article with next steps to capturing an image. I am stuck at prepare image for capture. I have successfully performed an SOI, but when I run my job for prepare image for capture and capture image, the status sits at waiting for client to receive task. I'm not convinced that I need a seperate Package Server for it to work properly.

Thanks again for the article!

To all: Enabling AD browsing is NOT required.  I meant to take that out of the document, but oh well.  I did just write how to do that, so once it is published, you may see how to enable AD browsing here: https://www-secure.symantec.com/connect/articles/h...

I don't know about imaging documents yet, but we will see what hte future holds :-)

You only need the 32 bit ('i586') version.

With 7.1 SP2 you can install IE9.

For IT Analytics Office Web components might be required:

http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?displaylang=en&id=22276

And also for IT Analytics Microsoft ADOMD.Net 9.0 (SQLServer2005_ADOMD_x64.msi) installed from:

http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?displaylang=en&id=24793

SIM from the trialware links here:

http://www.symantec.com/business/solutions/solutiondetail.jsp?solid=sol_infrastruct_op&solfid=sol_endpoint_management

It might need updating, the trialware links aren't always the latest version of SIM.

And don't forget to install SIM to the drive you want to install the rest of the Soultions to, D: or E:.

If you run SIM to create an Install Package it will cache all the install files saving download time when you are ready for the full install.

@andykn101:  Good points.  Looks like my link to SIM got cut off!

I used the x64 java and it worked great for me (since Windows 2008 R2 is required for 7.1 SP2.  I haven't tried IE9 yet.  I thought it will be supported in the next release?

I have yet to upload my ITA documnet, which I can confirm your comments about the ADOMD.  The Office Web Components are only needed on workstations that will be doing cube manipulation.

Until recently there was no Flash player for 64 bit browsers so you had to use 32 bit IE for the console (which is still recommended) so I'm not sure how 64 bit Java worked.

Nice work Ziggy!  Wish I had this when I built my first 7.1 test box!  I think I was back in the Configuring OS Features window about 10 times to ensure I had everything selected.  This is the kind of documentation that should be in the P&I Guide!

Thanks,

Impressed with the work done with this article. This is useful step-by-step guide. For me it lacks some explanations on why should be some options enabled/disabled during the installation. e.g. "Uncheck the Enable Microsoft Update box and complete the install" in step 5.

anyway, putting this to my Favorites!

at writing compatible code.

So an update to Silverlight could easily break the Console.

And anyway, in a proper managed environment you'd only put updates on under change control, having tested them on your pre-production system, not the day Microsoft release them.

Putting updates under control does make sense.

I have another question then. Since SMP is core for any solution from IT Management Suite it is clear that it (SMP = Notifcation Server) should be installed for any of these solutions. Question is: What About Site Server(s)? Are those separate installations or are they some kind of agents on existing servers?

Once the base Symantec Management Agent is installed on any computer meeting the pre reqs (XP can run some site services) you can use Sites in the NS to install the Site Services of your choosing (Package Service, Task Service, Deployment Service, OOB Service).

You can install Site Services on the Notification Server itself, which is always a Task Server.

Am I right then, saying that Client Management Suite could be installed on single machine? CMS site server supports 5000 agents (correct me if I'm wrong), but what is minimum requirement to install site server separately (200, 500, ...)?

I'm trying to install symantec management solution. Everything works fine like you described, but the install readiness check complains about crl check. This error seems be normal if you are behind a proxy server or have no internet connection. I tried to disable this check in internet options, I tried to modify the registry and I tried to modify machine.config in .NET Framework, but nothing happens. I don't know how to solve this problem.

...same here! Even a fix in the machine.config (.NET) didn't solved the Problem. The "AUTO FIX Button" as I read, didn't apear in the Symantec Installation Manager dialog. So, I'm not able to test the Symantec MDM.

I know this is not a solution but I had the same problem last week and symantec support came up with the following:

To enable the Next button if any of the install Readiness checks fail:
Add the key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Altiris\AIM\InstallReadinessCheck\
to the registry. Create a DWord called EnableNextbutton and set the value
 to 1.

Had to reload my NS 7.1 server over the weekend and this made a task I was fearing to consume my entire weekend just to install only take a few short hours.  Kudos, Ziggy!

Thank you Ziggy.  Excellently done and thanks for sharing.

To Symantec .... this is what your documentation should look like.  Have you ever heard the expression "a picture is worth a thousand words"?  The documentation you publish is horrible compared to the guide added here.

Thank you for making the steps so detailed and easy to follow. I am sure that someone who uses Vista or Windows 7 have to tweak some other settings in order for the installation to be successful. I hope that the reasons for why some settings have to be turned off can be made known because changing these can affect other programs as well.

I have not.  I am kinda torn, as it really isn't that much different.  I don't go into hierarchy as we don't use it.  You could (almost) just use this guide, but who knows what the future holds?  I might write one?

How about a variation? Where you describe how to bring up a 7.5 environment, with a new server, when you are already in a 7.1 environment? How do we migrate? That would be really useful to me and others!

Thanks!
