Hi,

We use backup Exec 2012 to backup the following;

1. Windows Server 2003 32-bit domaincontroller, Backup Exec 2012 trial is installed here.

2. Windows Server 2003 32-bit print server, it's also got a SQL database

3. Windows Server 2003 32-bit mail server, Exchange 2003 runs here.

I gather we need to purchase the following

1x Backup Exec 2012 (installed on domaincontroller)

1x Agent for Windows (for backing up the domaincontroller).

2x Agent for Applications and databases (for backing up Exchange (GRT) and SQL on printserver)

Is this correct? Is it true we need to purchase an Agent for Windows for the server where backup exec is installed? Do we need more Agents for Windows?

Thanks in advance,

Justin

You dont need the "1x Agent for Windows (for backing up the domaincontroller)."

The core Backup Exec server license (which you are installing on the DC) includes agent for windows for backing up the local media server.

Additional Agent for Windows licenses are required if backing up other (more) remote servers apart from the ones which you have mentioned.

Hello Justin,

 You would require following licenses:

1x Backup Exec 2012 core license

2x Agent for Applications and databases (for backing up Exchange (GRT) and SQL on printserver)

Is it true we need to purchase an Agent for Windows for the server where backup exec is installed?

NO. You would not require to buy another Agent for Windows license as Backup Exec core license has it in itself for the local server where Backup Exec is installed.

Do we need more Agents for Windows?

NO.

Thanks for the fast replies,

One last question: Do the 'Agents for Applications and databases' include the ability to backup "normal files" eg some files from C:\ drive, systemstate etc..?

Yes. The 'Agents for Applications and databases' include the ability to backup "normal files" eg some files from C:\ drive, systemstate etc.

Yes, they do (for that application server only)

So if you have an Exchange server + 1 Agent for Applications & Databases license, you can backup Exchange + C:\, other drives, system state etc for that server.

Excellent, thank you both!
