Related software in one directory / hive key
Hi,
I've noticed a couple of things with layers. If you import an archive, SVS will create two directories in your standard redirect folder. One with the read-only files and one with the write files. I noticed also that only the changes are put in the second folder. If you import a second application they will be assigned to directories 3 and 4.
So far nothing exciting until you reset a layer. If you reset the layer for application 1 (i.e. installed in directory 1 and 2) the reset will create a folder with the first available number. In our case, number 5. Then he deletes directory number 2. If you now reset the layer of application number 2 (i.e. installed in directories 3 and 4) he will create a new write dir with the first available number -- in our case number 2 -- and then deletes number 4. Now imagine if we would reset application 1 again. Folders 1 and 4 are registered to application 1 and the numbers 2 and 3 are accounted to application 2.
For troubleshooting and maintenance this, of course, is hell. I wanted to reset my Firefox but I wanted to try to copy my own settings out first (stored in the write directory under your SID) but I had to search through 45 directories to get what I wanted. After resetting the layer I had to find my new write dir and copy the settings back (which failed, by the way).
My suggestion is to install a folder with the name of the application or a number and create subdirs under that folder for the read and write. Now if you reset a layer you still know where to look.
Hopes this helps with improving this great product.

Finding your folder number - use the registry
While I do like your idea, one quick way to find the right folder number is to look in the registry:
HKLM\SYSTEM\Altiris\FSL\# (# matches the folder number)
Just search from the FSL level and look for your layer name. You'll find two, one with just the layer name (this is the Read-Only section) and one with __FSLPEERFSL (this is the Writeable section).
Hope that helps.
There are two keys, the
There are two keys, the first one is the informational key and then HKLM\SOFTWARE\fslrdr where the data is stored.
