Enhancement Request SVS: Wrapper in MSI
I have an enhancement request for Wise Package Studio / SVS.
I want to automatically deploy software in a layer on a user's computer. Not using Altiris Deployment but by GPO in the AD.
My idear: Compile an SVS package or export an layer. Wrap the package in an MSI. Make some custom actions in the MSI that uses the SVS Dll or the SVS Cli to import the SVS inside the MSI into the SVS on the computer the MSI is being installed on. Possibly first check if a layername exist already.
It is similar to the MSI wrapper in WPS 7.0, only this is an SVS Layer wrapper :) There is no need to capture the program because it is already captured.
Please make my wish come true :)
Would like to know if my suggestion will be taken into account and would more than happy to test it for you.
If this option can be made available, I can sell SVS to some of my customers. As for now, the lack of deploying software into SVS is a great problem.
The next release of WPS 7
The next release of WPS 7 will include in the Virtual Package Editor the ability to create an .EXE wrapper around a .VSA file. It will do exactly as you want: import and activate the .VSA. Additionaly you will have the option to include an SVS install in the wrapper as well (much like how you can include Windows Installer Runtime install in MSI wrapper).
Alphabet Soup -- .msi, .vsa, .exe
Wise Package Studio, starting with version 6.01, allowed you to create an .exe to wrap an .msi. The purpose is to allow you to retain the setup logic in the .msi while still deploying the app into a layer.
What pkaak is suggesting is an .msi to wrap a .vsa, to facilitate distribution via native Windows tools. Good idea; we'll consider this.
Also, keep an eye on what Altiris partner Scense (http://www.scense.nl/) is doing with group policies to manage SVS Virtual Software Packages!
Hi just wondering if there
Hi
just wondering if there are plans to allow SVS packages to be wrapped by an msi to allow deployment via AD and Group Policies.
This would be a fantastic addition and I'd be buying straight away.
thanks Matt
Sounds Great
We have the whole Altiris Infrastructure in place and it works great BUT I think the facilitation of Active Directory distribution would be a great addition!
Thanks - Tom Fronza
