I have a Windows SBS 2003 Server with SQL 2000 MSDE already installed with Veritas 10.x.  In order to replace Veritas 10.x with 12.5 I will need SQL 2005 Express installed.  The question is will I be able to have MSDE 2000 and SQL 2005 Express exist on the same server and has anyone had to do this in the past?  What was the experience and did it work?   Thanks in advance for any advice anyone may have on this.

I know just enough about this stuff to get by -- or so I thought.  I'm moving from sbs2000 Premium to sbs2003 Premium on a new server.  Also a new RD1000.  Running SQL Server 2005. The OS is fully patched.  I've loaded 10d and downloaded and installed SP4.  Beserver just hangs when the system starts, saying "Starting".  The event ID in the system log in Event Viewer is 7022 from Service CONtol manager -- "The backup exec server service hung on starting.  Backup exec starts but many things don't work.  If I go to Help / About BE..., it just closes. Now when I installed, it wouldn't let me install to sql.  It made me use MSDE.  Said it wasn't a valid instance.  Don't know if that makes a difference here, but don't know how to get around it. I can kill the process in Task Manager.  If I try to restart, I get a 1053 error.  "THE service did not respond to the start or control...

I use Backup Exec 10d to manage a daily and two weekly backups. We have 4 tape drives IBM1, IBM2, IBM3 and IBM4.  There are two cascaded Drive Pools, each containing two tape drives. The daily backup runs on the first of the 4 tape drives, IBM1. On Fridays, I manually pause the tape drive IBM2  to force the weekly backup to start on tape drive IBM1 so that it will be finished with this tape drive by Monday for the daily backup to run. On Sundays, I manually unpause the tape drive IBM2 to ensure that the backup can continue. Does anyone know the command line to pause/unpause the tape drive?

Hello, last Week my Problem started, if i want to make a Backup of the single Mailboxes of the Exchange2003 Users the Backup Job hangs at the last entry of my Backup Job. The Jobs seems to run but it hangs it is not possible to chance it or something, i have to stop all Services and restart them. I know its not important to save the single Mailboxes if i got a Backup from the InformationStore. But i want to get fast back to single Elements if something happens. My System Windows 2003 Server, Backup Exec 10d+Exchange Option+OpenFiles, Exchange 2003. Every Software is Patched already and there are no more Paches available. One thing i changed is the Backup Driver. First i got a LTO1 and now a LTO3. Hope someone can Help. Thank You Best Regards HWB

I know this is a noob question.  I have searched the forums, but have not found anything exactly to my liking and would appreciate a few tips. Currently, I have the following Logical drive letters on our Win2k3 File Server: C: = Raid 5 internal array and primary storage D:, E: optical drives K: External drive L: External drive M: External drive I have added a new Raid 5 array into the server and am going to make it Logical drive letter K:, and therefore am going to "bump up" the current K-M to the next highest letter, and make my new Raid 5 Logical drive K:  I know, I know, this is creating more work - I could make the new letter N:, but my boss does't it want it that way :) My noob questions are: How will backup exec react when I change the logical drive letters?  Will it crash out in any way until I get the jobs modified to reflect the logical drive lettering change? In other words, the file selections on my jobs will no longer be valid....

I have BE 9.1 and am using a Buffalo linkstation as a storage device on the network. The goal is to backup that data and store the backup on another Linkstation. I have been all over the forums, tried many recommended scenarios with the same results. Final error: 0xa000fe29 Authentication failed on connection to the server Final error category: Security errors Access is denied to the remote agent. Check the logon account for the specificate device I have created a user on the NAS to match the BE user without any luck. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Hi I am currently busy with a DRP exercise and is restoring 2 backup jobs from a LTO1  tape. I am using backup Exec 10d. When I catalog the tape, only my second job is catalogued 113gig. My exchange information store, 30gig backup job shows 0 bytes. According to backup exec on my live server both backup jobs ran successful. The first backup job is set to overwrite and the second job is set to append only. Please assist Thanks Ivan

Hi, I have a backup server which is running backup exec CPS 10d and it is backing up a number of servers to its hard disk. I would now like to install the backup exec media server 10d but I would like to do this in a way where I do not loose the backups and not interrupt the backup schedule of these servers. Is it possible to instal the backup media server on top of the CPS and slowly move over to the new software? Preferebly I would like to keep the same hardware. Thanks in advance

I have read many of the help topics in my Veritas 9.1 (with Exchange Component) It is hard to sort out what you can and can't do depending on if you do a MB/Public B/U or storage group BU and if you are restoring to original location, RSG or Redirecting. Im making a chart with backup this to restore this etc. cause its so convoluted in the helps. Anyway as I'm working my way along there is one Veritas help article that is titled "Redirecting Exchange 2000 and 2003 Storage Group and Database Restores" One paragraph says, *************************** Following are requirements for redirecting restores: The storage groups and databases must already exist on the target server, and have the same names as the original storage groups or databases. ************************* I have a couple of questions regarding this.  (by the way I understand that its talking about BUing up the (first) storage group, not individual MBs and public folders.) 1. How am I suppose...

Hi, I'm running Veritas Backup Exec v9.1 and using a HP Ultrium-1 tape drive. Over the months BackupExec has been taking longer and longer to backup our network shares. I'm guessing this is the tape drive just general wear and tear, but I'm just wondering if anything else could be an issue. I'm having data rates of about 400Mb/s, but is this normal, or too slow? Please advise,. Thanks Chris

Currently we have a Central Admin server (CAS) that manages 8 other media servers, each at remote locations in a WAN environment.  All of the servers are running BEWS 10d w/ Service Pack 4.  We have another media server at a 9th office that runs 12.5.  Questions: 1) Is it possible to pull this into the 10d Central Admin server? 2) If that is not possible, and we instead choose to upgrade the CAS, will the CAS with 12.5 continue to manage the 10d media servers so we can upgrade them in phases? Thanks.

One of our servers that were being backed up by CPS blue screened and I rebuilt the server with the same name.  Then added it to CPS so I could restore the data.  Now I go into CPS and there is no data to restore.  :-(  I looked in the backup directory and the files are all still there but I know in the past that I can not just use these files, they have to be restored through CPS.  Is there a way to recover/re-catalog these files into the database? backup exec version is 10d (build 10.1.327.1001) no backup has been done on the Databases so can not restore to a prior time :-( thought about using the cpsDBValidate but not sure if it is going to bring the files in or if it is going to delete the files in the backup directory.  hints, thoughts, helpful comments welcomed. thanks.

Have a Novell server running Backexec 9.1, tape change has 8 slots. Only using 7 currently. This server and configuration is somewhat new. I first started off with running backups , Full or Differential , 7 days a week, each week having its own job, its own media set and different tapes assigned to each set. Each set only had one tape assigned to it.  The first 7 weeks , everything ran as it should, switched to the next week and new media set without any issues. Than for some reason, when it cycled back to week 1, no job would run. I tired everything and watched as the clock ticket by the start time and nothing happened. No errors, no nothing.Well i, for some reason, had to erase and re-scheule all the jobs, which was not to bad considering all the settings, groups, media remained the same, just had to reenter those jobs. Again for 7 weeks everything ran fine. Now starting this week its started somethign new. Jobs are running as planned, except not...

I would like to setup a policy that would allow multiple tapes to be used for each month, here is why. our site allows append to tape with no overwrite and tapes must be retained for 7 years,  so with the massive amount of data be backed up I may fill one tape and need to load another one automatically, how can this be done.

Hi, Recently a new "bug" has appeared in my backup routines.  Every time I put in a tape, either Full or Incremental it wirls around for far longer than usual and then pops out.  If I put it back in straight away, it wirls for a little longer and then all is well.  The backup jobs run fine. Why is it spitting out the tape?  There are no error messages and the tape is set to be overwritten/append. Thanks in advance.  Running 9.1 Rev 4691

We changed the password to our server, and the backups stopped working.  I didn't realize it until I got an email notification that the weekly backup had failed. (Server: "SERVER2003") (Job: "Weekly Tape") Weekly Tape -- The job failed with the following error: Authentication failed on connection to the server. Make sure that the user account has the appropriate permissions and that the password was typed correctly.Looking at the system logs, I noticed that the daily backups also had been failing since we changed the password on our server. Looking at previous forums, in the Backup Exec's Backup Exec Services I changed the service account information (password), restarted services. When stopping and restarting services, I got the following:  Processing services  Stop services on server: SERVER2003 Stopping Backup Exec Agent Browser on SERVER2003. The service Backup Exec Agent Browser has been stopped on SERVER2003. Stopping Backup Exec Job...

I am using Backup Exec version 10d with Service Pack 4. I am encountering a problem when I try to backup my SQL Server Standard 2005 64 bit installation, in that it does not create the 4 $4idr files that are needed to recover the Master and Model database. Backup Exec and SQL Server are installed on separate servers, so the Windows Remote agent is being used. The Backup Exec Server is installed with Windows Server Standard 2003 with SP2 and the SQL Server is using Windows Server Enterprise 2003 x64 with SP2. As the SQL Server is 64bit, I have installed the Windows agent via mapping a drive to the Program Files\VERITAS\Backup Exec\NT\Agents\RANT64EX folder and running the setup.exe After investigation, I have tried the following: 1. Checked the Data folder on mssql is selected to be backed up 2. Backup Exec was previously on SP3, so I upgraded to SP4 and then re-installed the 64 bit windows agent on the SQL Server 3. Given the Backup Exec logon account full access to the...

Hi,  Two servers,  Server 1, Media server and server 2, a SQL server.  Today there is a back up job running once a day in the Enterprise Manager backing up the db:s localy on server 2, the SQL-server.  I suppose the correct way is to Backup exec with the SQL agent to back up the db:s. But, my question is.... Is it possible to just back up the files from the Enterprise Manager  backup?  Thanks, N.

Hello all, We have been struggling with backing up our email archive solution for months. This archive consists of millions of small .xml files for all of our users email accounts. It is currently at around 650GB (and growing of course). We have tried using Commvault and writing to tape backup along with our other servers, however, due to the high volume of individual files this process took over 31 hours to complete, mostly because of all the reading it has to do. In order for all of our other backups to completely in a timely manner we have installed Backup Exec 10d on our Email Archive server and purchased a WD 1TB MyBook. I am doing a removable backup to disk job and have set the max file size to 50GB per .bkf file. This look like it will take around 25-26 hours now (still running at the moment). Need some advice/help. I know the size of the data is not the problem, it is the millions of files that need to constantly read and written. Has anyone had any experience with handling...

We are currently running Backup Exec 10d on Windows Business Server 2003. Recently, we upgraded our contact manager, Goldmine. During this process, we installed SQL Server ver. 10. Now I'm receiving the following errors: Unable to open the item C:\Program Files\Microsft SQL Server\MSSQL10.MSSQLSERVER\MSSQL\DATA\master.mdf - skipped. ....mastlog.ldf ...model.mdf ...modellog.ldf ...MSDBata.mdf ...MSDBLog.ldf ...ReportServer.mdf ...ReportServerTempDB.mdf ...ReportServerTempDB_log.LDF ...ReportServer_log.LDF ...tempdb.mdf ...templog.ldf Unable to open them item D:\Shared Folders\GoldMine SQL Server Database\GoldMine.mdf - skipped ...GoldMine_log.ldf We didn't have this problem before the upgrade & I know that we switched to an SQL version of Goldmine. I checked our license info under 'About' & we are licensed & have installed the Agent for Microsoft SQL Server. But when I read the administrator's guide, it only mentions SQL ver. 7.0. So I'm wondering if I ...

Hi all, I am running CPS Backup Exec 10d for windows backup. I have been experiencing a backup error of one server out of about 7 different servers. The error is stating an internal error: cannot set file system object (Filename) attributes. The aboe is the main problem it is advertising but it is also giving a number of other errors: unable to translate name to IP address and Requested job could not be found. Job may have already been completed or been canceled. This server has been backed up before without any problems. Do you know what the problem could be and how to solve it? Thanks

Hi everyone, We are currently running an LTO3 media drive with uncompressed tape capacity of 400 gigs.  I would like to move to the higher capacity LTO4 tapes with 800 gigs uncompressed capacity.  My question is, will the LTO3 media drive that I have now utilize the larger capacity tapes, are they compatible?  Can I write more data to the LTO4 tapes and still be able to read on an LTO3 drive?  Thanks.

Hi I’m trying to configure a D2D (no tape) backup to a NAS box.   What I need to accomplish is this:   Saturday Full backup to folder “Weekly” on my NAS. Keep the ability to restore 10 weeks back (only Saturdays)   Monday - Friday differential backup to folder “Daily” on my NAS. Overwrite each “day” the following week.   I’ve created to Jobs (Weekly backup / Daily backup) and two Media Sets (Daily / Weekly) The Weekly job have the “overwrite” parameter set! The Weekly Media set have 10 weeks of protection and append set to “none”   The Daily job have the “overwrite / append” parameter set! The Daily Media set have 6 days of protection and append set to “none” (I expect it to create more files if needed?? And the reuse them when overwrite protection expires??) Both jobs have "software compression" set.   Is this the right way to accomplish my...
