I had a issue with Dell recovering a corrupted sql database several weeks ago and while trying to resolve our issue we couldn't recover files from the tape because of catalog issue...so we installed several updates, orginally the program was called Veritas Backup Exec 10.0
We installed the updates in this order
1. Q175168.BEWS10.0.5520.ESD_277181
2. Q180958.BEWS10.1.5629.3_279332
(now I think I need to install the 10.1 5629 service pack 4
because on the task pane of backup exec and the dlo agent says "TskPnEnabledItem")
please advise

Hi All,
Ill just give the detailed description what happened in past week.
We changed our policy for media management to 28 Days Overwritable protection and 7 Days Appendablity to Media.
What we observed during this week is that, the job which is spanning across multiple media is asking for the Overwritable media even if we are setting Job property to accept Appendable media.
We opened a case with Symantec, they told us that, the logic used to accept the media is the same. It will ask for an overwritable media for jobs spanning across medias.
If this is true then we are in the bad shape now, coz we have to provide number of media to media set. So = increase in the Media Requirement per Media Set = Direct Cost Impact
I am requesting all of you, if you have faced the same thing/issue(for me atleast), kindly contribute your opinion.
According to my Requirement, Spanning Job should accept the appendable media. (What you think....???)
Symantec Should provide open to choose between the...

Hi,
I apologise but I am new to this whole Veritas BackUp Exec situation. We are running vers 9.1 and when I activate a backup job it stays in the 'loading media' phase and never completes. I have tried different tapes but no joy.
I also have an 'Eject Media' job in the task list that I cannot cancel. I have put that on 'hold'
Does anyone have any ideas? how can I cancel the 'Eject' job and thoughts on the backup 'Loading Media'
Many Thanks

I suspect it's because of the characters in the subject line, but haven't found any knowledge base article on this. Can someone please confirm or point me to a possible cause.
Note: have looked at several articles on "Access Denied" but none seem to relate to this problem.
Thanks!

Been searching for a resolution, but can't seem to locate anything that's helped. Here's what I've got, what I've done, and hopefully someone can point me in the right direction.
LAN-side:
Media server; Windows 2003 SBS, latest SP installed; Domain controller; SEPM/SEP; Backup Exec 10d
Created a User Defined Resource to webserver in DMZ (port 6000 on firewall opened from DMZ to LAN). Webserver is NOT in the domain. Added an administrative account on webserver as a BUE Logon Account. Can use that credential set in backup job configuration, run test, and it is successful. Able to select folders on webserver for back up routine. In Tools > Options > Network and Firewall, have selected ports 5204 through 5214 for the Enable Remote Agent TCP dynamic port range and selected ports 5215 through 5221 for the Enable media server TCP dynamic port range.
DMZ-side:

Greetings all,
I am running bexec 10d ver 10.1 rev 5629, on server 2003 sp1, backing up to LTO3 connected locally SCSI. I am backing up a mix of servers; 2000 and 2003.
Normally my weekend full backup is around 1.3 TB, and the differentials start Monday at about 40 GB and then slowly climb in size during the week.
Last week the Tuesday diff went from 49 GB to 650 GB!! All the diffs since then have been over 600GB. Another weekend full has run since then and the diffs are still over 600GB. The server that is causing the change is running 2003 SP1, and is sharing files to Macintoshes with AFP over IP.
I am using the standard grandfather/father/son policy. The policy hasn't changed.
Anything from a Bexec standpoint that could be causing this?
Thanks,
Mark

Status of job does not change to "Stopped" when Backup Destination is full when running backups using Backup Exec Continuous Protection Server (BECPS)
This is the exact scenario I am facing.
Data from the source volume exceeded the disk space on Destination Volume. That caused CPS to cancel the job and it shows exactly in the above mentioned document.
Destination Volume = 1.1TB
Source volume originally was 800GB, snapshot is taken once at midnight.
The source volume (remote server) data increased to 1.2 TB, the CPS job cancelled due to insufficient disk space in destination volume(local partition). Source volume has been reduced to 800GB again.
I have deleted snapshots older than 100 days. Started the job manually, still the same error and the destination disk is still full.
What needs to be done to get the CPS job started again?
Any guidance appreciated.

Hi,
Currently if you want to change the media set for your jobs, you have to manually edit each and every job and change the media set. it becomes very tedious when we have around 100 jobs for which we have to change the media set on the weekly basis.
Symantec should have some option which will allow to change the media set for all the selected jobs at once. Also it should have a filter kind of thing, which basically will show which jobs are using a particular media set.

One XP pro machine in our backup has suddenly failed to backup. It failed once before and I reinstalled locally to fix it for a couple of weeks. It has failed again and will not install locally or remotely. When the remote PC failed BE was running as LSA.
The local install (setup /rant32 -s) flashes for a moment and appears to do nothing. No files are copied and no log entries appear.
The remote install give a file splash screen of: Attempting to connect to server \\PC-NAME failed with the following error: Access is denied. Please wisit http://support.veritas.com/docs/269175 to view possible reasons why the remote installation cannot continue.
None of these suggestions helps. The firewall is turned off. I have stopped BEComReg, cleared both logs, deleted VERITAS Shared folder and started over.
With the remote install, the 2 files are copied to \\PC-NAME\Program Files\Common Files\VERITAS Shared. The process BEComReg is started and here...

hi all,
I'm trying to get a PX502 tape library to come up in Backup Exec ver. 10.1 Rev 5629 on Win2003 R2
It has an DLT-S4 Tape drive in it and both the library and drive appear in Removable Media inside Computer Management but it won't show up in Backup Exec. The tape drive itself shows up but the library won't. I tried disabling both in removable media and I tried each combination and still nothing is found in Backup Exec even with reboots in between.
I'm all out of ideas and wondering if there is a special driver for it to detect the robotic library? Any idea please
Thanks

I am setting up some backups. I have a couple of questions. How I would like to do it is on wednesdays have an incremental backup and on saturday have a full backup. Here are my questions:
1.For incremental do I want to use the archive bit option or time modified option. Please explain
2. Do i want to append backups or erase last. I am guessing I want to do the append option with the incremental backups.
thanks

Hello,
I have Backup Exec set to backup 3 directories in the D drive on a server with a total of 5 directories on the D drive. Whenever the job runs, Backup Exec builds *.bkf files in those three directories that I have chosen to backup. After 3 or 4 days, the server runs out of space on D, and I have to delete all the bkf files to get the space back. Each bkf file is about 1gb. I don't know what these files are for, or why BackupExec is creating them while the backup job is running. I tried to see if there is a way to turn the file creation off if it is not needed.

We are using Backup Exec 10d and have it configured to backup to disk. We created a disk pool with 2 disks in it. one 255GB disk and one 1TB disk. Backups have been running fine until this past week, where they have been failing due to the smaller disk being full. As I understand it, Backup Exec should choose the disk from the pool with space on it for the backups. Is this not true?
What I have done to get the backups going is disable the disk that is full, so that the only choice Backup Exec has is to choose the disk with free space on it. Any help/advice will be appreciated.

we have a compaq MSL5000 tape library with one tape drive installed. it has 2 magazines. we are using backup exec 10d to control the backups. we recently started putting barcoded labels on the tapes because we wanted to move forward in technology. :) the tape library has a barcode reader and scans the front of the tapes to see what was inserted.
the process we do now for backups is this:
3 tapes get loaded each day for 3 servers. a file server, sql server and exchange server. every day we take out yesterdays tapes and walk them to our other building across the street to a safe. we grab the tapes for today, and place them into the magazines. on fridays (or days before holidays), we grab the saturday or any other tapes that need to run. the magazines are divided up for the different servers and different days. for the file server, on weekdays we do incremental backups and saturday...

Hi all,
Backup Exec 9 on a Netware 6.5 server - - -
I know that open user files will not be backed up. But my question is this:
At what point will backup exec mark an open file as unavailable for backup? Does it build an index of all files, open or not, and just pass over them if it cannot access them at the point it tries to write that open file to tape - - - or does it exclude it initally and pass over it regardless.
I have some crucila files that are practically open 24 hours a day. They can be sut down for a bit, but not for an entire 3 hour period. If I need to, I will create a seperate backup routine for this these crucial files that will take just a few minutes (During which time users will be able to exit, since it's a much shorter duration.) But before I go and do that, I just want to understand it better, It's not so crucial that one of these files gets missed a few times a week . . . .but I need to make...

Hi,
I hope someone can be of assistance. I currently have 2 servers. One which is running Windows Server 2003 with Backup Exec 10d version 10.1 (with Sony tape drive).I have recently moved the staff shared area from this server onto another domain controller which is Windows Server 2008. What i want to be able to do is to backup this area using backup exec on the older server. When i browse in the selections list, the 2008 server is greyed out and reads the following message:
****Selection of this item is disabled. Possible reason are:*******
Before i begin going through the list of reason i wanted to know if there was any known reason why what i am trying to do would not be possible....
Any help would be much appreciated.

Hi,
I have a Dell PowerEdge 1600SC server, with a DLT1 drive. The drive recently failed and a new one was installed by a Dell Engineer. Ever since the new drive has been installed the backup excec job will not start properly. The job starts then sits with the message pre-processing and will not continue. You are not able to cancel the job or the backupexec services. the only way to cancel is to re-boot the server. Dell advised me to upgrade backupexec 9.0 to 9.1 which I have done yesterday but still get the same message. I then attempted to run the backup job not using the open file agent and the job runs fine. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what could be causing this.
Thank you

I just upgraded my BDC to Windows Server 2003, now I cannot connect to my PDC which is 2000 server with BE to back it up. Is there something that keeps me from connecting because it is going from 2003 Server to 2000? It connected fine when it was 2000 Server to 2000 Server. I reinstalled the client from the 2003 server. Thanks

Hi, On 9.1 Have a library.
The tapes I believe hold about 400GB. We backup 300GB on a full back up.
On a differential backup we only get about 11GB. The differentials are backing up to the same tape everynight.
I want a 2 week rotation out of the 16 tapes, not a month. So here it is. Can I config the tapes/backup/whatever the hell to backup only once to a tape?
Thanks in advance

hi, I have Backup Exec 10 and we are moving from a standard tape drive to an IBM 3581 Ultrium Tape Autoloader.
The autoloader has 7 slots one for each day. BE can see the autoloader and it appears under the robotic library so it works fine.
My quesiton is how to I configure the media sets in BE to make sure that when its used the tape in Slot 1 on a Monday it dosent try to use it on a Tuesday and it moves to the next available slot i.e Slot2
Thanks for any help

hi,
I am having an issue with my backup exec 10.1 on my Windows Server 2003 seeing the Remote Agent on my Netware 5.1 Sp8e server. I created a test environment on my XP machine and it saw it fine. I even upgraded the remote agent to the latest 9.1 release for netware. I am using Client Service for Netware in order to connect to the Netware server drives. It is only used for Groupwise so I prefer not to install the Novell client. Any ideas of what to look for or what is different between the XP machine that worked and the Server 2k3 machine that does not work.
Thanks in advance

When using Selection in backup exec to select servers and folders to backup. I would like to know if there is any way to determine what's the size of the data I want to backup before I even start backing up the data.
Most of my backup jobs don't go 100% successfull, so I can't compare how much data I intended to backup versus the size of the data I managed to backup.
thanks
