Does anyone know how to pass the return code of the Backup Exec job down to its post command script?  I basically need a way to have the post command script run one set of commands if the backup job success or another set of commands if the backup job fails. Thanks in advance.

Hi, We are considering Backup exec, we are currently running Redhat 3, 4 and 5.  How stable has this been?? Is major issues with performance, reliability or any other quirkyness??? Thanks

We currently upgraded from backup exec 11d to backup exec 12.5 sp3. Applied all patches updates, etc and pushed out the latest remote backup agent to all servers being backed up, another words, we thought everything was the same except the version, same backup jobs, same files to be backed up, but... we noticed a signaficantly reduced backup speed to tape to complete the 2 night jobs we run.  My HP LTO2 drive was getting 750-800 mb/min and my HP LTO3 drive was getting 1100-1150 mb/min for their respective jobs. After the upgrade, my LTO2 is getting 550-575 mb/min and my LTO3 is getting 850-875 mb/min.?? I saw a similar post about upgrading the drivers for the tape drives to symantec drivers, so we did that with no affect on the speed. I've heard 12.5 sp3 is faster than 11d, not slower, everything else is EXACTLY the same, we're lost on this one. media server is also the domain controller - windows 2003 32bit server R2, backup up windows 32 bit and 64 bit R2 servers? We are...

Hello, Iam testing the Desaster Recovery for an Windows Exchange 2007 Server running on a 64bit Windows2003 Machine. Iam using BE 12.5. I set up a testing Enviroment, with our Active Directory. Then I set up a BE 12.5 (testing version) in this enviroment too. Then I set up a Wind2003 64bit on a new machine for the recovery test. I copied the IMG and B2D files containing the Image and SystemStae of our live Server to the Server in the testing enviroment. Servername: srv-mail-01 Domain: whatever.mydom -- examples of course :-) I followed the steps unt No. 10 in this document for recovering the system State and so on... http://seer.entsupport.symantec.com/docs/236286.htm Here is the problem now: When I try to recover the server BE does not find it. I guess because BE is looking for srv-mail-0.whatever.mydom and the "new" server wich si still in the workgroup has the name srv-mail-01 WITHOUT the domain? File redirection seems not to work, its just coping the files to the server...

I have the program installed and setup with time and dates to run, but the services keep stopping by themselves. If im on the server 2 or 3 hours prior to the scheduled backup, it will run and complete successfully. If the server is left at idle all day, it will not run, and the following morning I have to restart all services in the back up exec program. This is somthing simple im sure, I'm just missing it. Any suggestions/help would be appreciated. Other notes Running windows server 2008 software. Have the power options on high performance have selected not to turn off hard disk, screen and also not to hibernate.

I am running BE 12.5 for Windows server and I see in the manual that there is the option for duplicating backed up data however when I follow the instructions I'm not finding the New Job to duplicate backup sets. I only see Duplicate Backup sets job. Is this the same option? Please advise. Thanks, Sheena K.

We 3 Hyper-V hosts on Windows Datacenter 2008, 2 of which backup fine.  The 3rd fails, throwing a VSS error for every virtual guest.  The ~20 guests themselves do not show VSS errors or anything else of note in the event viewer. The failing host shows constant VSS warnings in the event viewer: Volume Shadow Copy Warning: The provider has reported a storage identifier that is not supported by VSS.                  Codeset:     1                  Type:          5                  Size:           4                  NextOffset:...

Hi commununity, sorry about my poor English ;-) here is one more discussion about compression and Backup Exec: symptom: tape hardware compression is disabled during start of Backup Exec services proof: - stopping all services of Backup Exec - start LTT and generate a support ticket, shows hardware compression disabled! - using LTT configuration utility setting compression to enable - verify setting by using the support ticket function again - compression is enabled - verify setting by using LTT test utility compression test, reporting 2.16 to 2.31 :-) - starting Backup Exec services and after that immediately stopping them - verify setting by using the support ticket function of LTT again - compression is DISABLED! -> this proves that no job configuration causes this issue - whats going on here? what we did: - changed tape drive - HP did! - downgrading firmware in tape WP8A to WP86 - using new media - verifying drivers, service packs, etc. configuration: -...

Hello I have Windows 2003 Standard Edition with VERITAS Backup Exec 12.5. I have a server BKP Exec, where I have armed job well. A few days, I included in the Job a shared folder on desktop PC and from that change ends with exemptions and does not perform the BKP in the desktop PC. The error is: Backup-bue012227cV-79-57344-3844 - The media server was unable to connect to the remote agent machine bue012227c. The media server using the local agent to try to complete the operation. Unable to initialize Remote Agent The error is that it must be installed on the agent desktop and BKP I understand that there is a way of making a backup without having to install an agent on the desktop. I can help with this problem?

Many users of Backup Exec are annoyed by the recommendation to apply all hotfixes made to the server also to the remote agent. I think this is quite understandable, because in daily business it is in most cases simply not easy to do it because of other, higher priority topics. With this short piece of text I would like to change your point of view. Please consider the following facts: 1. Many problems of backups with BE result out of a mismatch of server and RAWS. 2. Hotfixes are hotfixes, because they fix important issues. 3. If you have to call tech support, they will definitely check the version of server and RAWS and in case they do not match advise you to update. 4. This is really important: If you are waiting too long, the number of updates that have to be applied increase that much that a push update will no longer be possible. The last point is really important. My investigations showed that somewhere between 8 (result of tech support) and 10 (my result) updates...

Hi! I use BackupExec 12.5 with all/latest Updates on Windows Server 2003 with all/latest Updates. In recent times i get mails from the backup server with the following message(s): "Der Wechselmediendienst kann die Bibliothek Tape0 nicht verwalten. Die Datenbank ist beschädigt." and "Der Wechselmediendienst kann die Bibliothek Tape1 nicht verwalten. Die Datenbank ist beschädigt." Free translated: The changer-service can not manage library tape0/1. The database is corrupt/damaged/broken. Could anyone tell me more about the message/about the mentioned libraries? Thanky you with the best greetings!!

Dear reader, I have backup exec 12.5 and the jobs I am working with are sceduled to rund outside office hours (after 17:00 until 6:59 the next day) but some of the jobs seem to be run more than once during the night. I have read somewhere that I need to clear or clean the job queue but I have not seen any info on how to do this. I have also had some instances of jobs being marked as recovered. The nights the recovered jobs appeared the backup server engine crashed. So if anybody knows how to clear the job queue or has any other ideas about thow to go about this please let me know. Best regards, Agust.

I am running Backup Exec 12 and am having an issue with Backup Exec resetting the archive bit after a backup to tape job. The job is running under a GFS policy the monthly and weekly jobs are set to Full backups and to reset the archive bit and the daily is set for Incremental and also resets the archive bit.    Let me explain what I am doing to clarify the setup. We use Lightspeed to compress and backup SQL databases to a file share. Once the files are on the file server we use Backup Exec to backup the files to tape and reset the archive bit.   Once the archive bit is flipped we use a script to delete any files older than 2 days.     I just found some files from June that has been backed up to tape for months but the job is not resetting the archive bit.   Other files in the same folder get the archive bit reset, I checked the properties, security and attributes on the files and the only difference is the archive attribute...

Hi, Why would some of my Win 2008 Servers be backing up partly with Snapshots? e.g. The full system is selected for backup which includes C drive D drive Shadow Copy Components and System State. For some reason, C drive back ups (Fulls and Diffs) are all run as folder? backups but D drive, Shadow Copy Components and System State (Fulls and Diffs) are all snapshot backups? I can't see an option to see this either way, it seems to have decided to do it on it's own but why would C drive not also be snapshot backups? Cheers, Aaron

We have a scheduled backup job that is scheduled to start at 12:01 am.  We've had to expand the window so that it completes, because it will not start the job any earlier than 6 am.  We've removed all pre-jobs and it still does it.  I've run out of ideas on how to fix this.  has any one else ran into it, or know of a fix for it?
