Am I able to upgrade from DS 6.9 to 7.0 using the same licensing that I have for 6.9?  Also, how do I obtain version 7.0? Please help with this. Shawn.

I'm looking for feedback from anyone who may have a project plan to share for a CMS 7 install.  I've got a rough version, but looking for feedback from others.  We currently only use Helpdesk 6 and DS 6.8 SP1.  After every task is done, Software and Inventory solution are installed.  We've got the servers built, Altiris Agent installed on every client system, we've got software policies, we've got software installs to go with the policies, systems are remediating, software portal is set up for users, we're doing patch management, we've got the SAN space, we've set up the network properly for software to be distributed, pcAnywhere in use.  Assume all endpoints have the AClient already. So, short version, a spreadsheet with time assigned to each task or each solution, broken down by resource, with a time estimate for each.  Does not include Deployment Solution 6.9 SP3 or ServiceDesk 7, I'll post about that in the respective forums.

So after we reviewed the inventory rules in the last post, today we are going to look at the registry entries on the client that drive the various PMS inventory components and policies. So let's look at an extract of some interesting registry keys (from my test systems): [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Altiris\Altiris Agent\InventoryRuleAgent\InventoryRule\Policies\{06D80F00-9D63-4714-ACD7-CE980E8C139A}] "Interval"=dword:000000f0 "OnlyReportInventoryIfChanged"=dword:00000001 "SendInventorySummary"=dword:00000000 "DoNotRunInventory"=dword:00000000 "ImpersonateInteractiveUser"=dword:00000000 "GS"="VBOX-ATRS1" "SG"="{06D80F00-9D63-4714-ACD7-CE980E8C139A}" "Name"="Default Microsoft Vulnerability Analysis Policy" "Hash"="MdcquTeunMeC4zX/VirSgQ==" "LastWakeup"=hex:e7,d5,c4,b3,6e,97,e3,40,00,00,00,00 "LastInventoryHash"="pRUooqcCkp8ZRj...

Hi All, I'm pretty open about this. As we wait for Version 7 of the Asset Management Solution, I was wondering if there is ANY way to just add a date to a PC resource, i.e another field in the a table or something..somewhere..anything?? I'm trying to think of a simple way to do this. At the moment we can grab a good list containing PC names, service tags, model/brand - if i can somehow put a date to that and have the report bring it out..thats all I really need. Interested to hear thoughts/suggestions Thanks

I am currently evaluating Altiris 7 for deployment in our company and ran into a snag in the test environment.  Every system we deploy the Software Managment Solution Agent too gets stuck in an endless detection check loop and eventually crashes with a "C++" error. (I don't have the error on the screen at the momment to give any further details) The Task Histrory shows hundreds of entries with the "Detrection check for Software Managment Solution Agent 7.0.1291.0 - English (United States)" task execution successfully two to three times a second with the return code of "2". Any Ideas?

I looked on line but can not find a good read to send to my mangers. Can anyone point me or paste a good read that I can send to management. We are interested in the blacklist and stoping certain applications from being run or installled. Were interested in other features as well.  ---

Hi, In NS6, if i had the following scenario; Site 1 = NS and Head Office Site 2 = Package Server Site 3 = Package Server Site 4 = Package Server I know my NS Server is by default a package server for local clients, but do i need to specifiy that under 'Site Maintenance'? In other words distinguish it as a Package Server to that site, or will any client local to the NS Server at head Office automatically fetch patches from it? If i were to look at the Altiris Agent details on my clients at any of the 'other' Sites 2, 3, or 4, should they be listing their Notification Server as their local Package Server on that Site or will they still register their Notification Server as the one in Head Office? Thanks Steve

When trying to select an OU for the AD Import I get the following error: An error occurred initializing the OU Picker: TreeViewCtrl 'ouPickerCtrl_TreeCtrl' cannot be found. This is a fresh install on a new server and I cannot figure out why it's not working. It worked perfectly on the old server. There were no errors during the installation...HELP!

Recently I received an inquiry from a customer about a 16GB IntelAMT database. The customer had configured less than five thousand Intel AMT systems, and they expressed concerned that the database was so large. There are customers with several tens of thousands of Intel AMT objects configured, yet their databases are less than half that size. What guidelines can be provided to determine an appropriate database size? In general, the core database is only a few megabytes in size, with each configured Intel AMT system adding on average less than 0.5MB to the database. But if your IntelAMT database is far beyond this average (i.e. much greater than 0.5MB per configured system), you might be wondering what to do. The core answer to handling large or overgrown databases is to reduce the amount of event logging. Events are logged based on actions, errors, and level of logging. If you are experiencing a number of errors in configuring or maintaining with the Intel Setup and Configuration...

What is the Altiris Notification Server? From a user point of view it can be many different things, from a deployment to a compliance or reporting tool, it's a very hard thing to define. However from a technical stand point there is a more definite answer to the question. Notification Server is a set of programs and tools that are used collectively to deliver various solutions to users. This is not any better? Okay, so let's get down to the bottom of it, with a detailed view of the core NS components and how they are related to one another [click on the image for a full size version]: So in order and by categories we have: The Altiris Agent running on managed computer and it's related communication interfaces on the server located under/Altiris/NS/Agent [bottom left for the agent, middle left for the IIS interfaces] The Altiris console and its related web interfaces located under various web directories (/Altiris/NS, /Altiris/NS/Resource) [middle-center section] The Windows Task...

Hello Everyone, We are in the process of evaluating different replacements options for the Altiris Beta Portal.  As part of moving towards a combined, single-sign on service for our customers, we would like to elicit feedback from you on what you would think of making the beta products available via Symantec Connect?  A couple of questions to consider: What are the main reasons your organization does not participate in the Altiris Beta Program? Would you be more likely to participate if the products were available via Connect? For those that participate in beta, what can we do to help you more effectively participate in our beta cycles. Please let me know your thoughts by responding to this forum discussion. Post your questions, and I will respond directly. We thank you for your efforts in helping us improve our products. -Best Regards, Andrew Taylor Symantec

Thanks to the effort of individuals in the End Point management team we have the Single Rule Evaluator and Software Update Agent diagnostics available (see https://kb.altiris.com for details) to help with the core PMS Inventory rules: IsApplicable and IsInstalled. However lately I have found some problems not related to both rules, but a little upstream from them: namely in the Software Release and Service Pack inventory rules. So what are these rules for? They, much like the IsInstalled (let shorten this to IIR for Installed Inventory Rule) and AIR (Applicable Inventory Rule) are defined in the Inv_Inventory_rule data class table. So they also contain an InventoryRuleXml entry and are handle by the Inventory Rule agent on the managed computers. What differs though is that both of these rule sets (and resulting data classes) are then used by Patch Management Solution to create the intersect collection, which is like a SQL inner join between the user select collection (...

So I started to run a little evaluation a couple days ago, and I am unable to import softpaqs.  Installation was issue-free. On changing views, one minute the progress bar has creeped but showing 0%, and on the other hand will be stuck at 99%.  I've checked out the PDF guides and discussions posted, and none have resolved.  I've rebooted, restarted services, recreated the share, reconfigured and created a new database, taken the softpaqs out of the filestore and readded them to make the button available to click on...nada.  Updated HP tools, systems list, nothing. Running a VM on an ESX Host - Windows Server 2003 SP2, 2GB, SQL2005 Standard, Java 6 Update 12, Trend, IE7; etc etc.  Wondering if I missed a step somewhere.  Hoping someone can point me in the right direction.  Thanks. Regards

Like many IT departments you probably maintain a database or spreadsheet to inventory computers. Here is a quick way to use bring your spreadsheet and pcAnywhere together. This works with the full version of pcAnywhere and pcAnywhere that is installed with SMC 7 First create a macro in your spreadsheet. I named the macro PCA_Remote and assigned Ctrl + q as a shortcut key to this macro. Next you will need to edit the macro and add the following code: Sub PCA_Remote() ' ' PCA_Remote Macro ' pcAnywhere Remote Control ' ' Keyboard Shortcut: Ctrl+q ' Dim vCell As String ' ****** What computer name to use. You may substitute ip addresses ******   vCell = ActiveCell.Value ' ****** You may nee to change the path if you did not use the default installation path. ****** Shell ("C:\Program Files\Symantec\pcAnywhere\AWREM32.EXE C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Symantec\pcAnywhere\Remotes\Network, Cable, DSL.chf /C" & vCell) End Sub Now save your...

The attached download queries the wmi class cim_datafile for files with certain extension. The wmi class contains all data normally found in the file header information and more! Querying this wmi class has proven to be many, many times faster than scanning a hard drive for file information. This sample has logic to query for all 'local drives' and to skip specified directories. The query logic itself currently queries on 'Extension' but can be modified to query on any other value in the wmi class. The NS7 custom inventory table xml file has been included.

I don't see a patch management forum so, I will try posting this here first. We are planning to deploy IE7 to all workstations which do not already have IE7 installed. However, I can't seem to find the Microsoft bulletin which includes this install. Does anyone here have any idea what that bulletin number would be? I have searched Microsoft's site with no luck.

A while ago EMarcado put together a vbscript to rapidly install the altiris agent. The article is here: Install Altiris Agent for Immediate Software Delivery For some reason we could never get it to work so we reworked it a bit. The result is now attached. The one issue I have been wondering about is why would the agent, after having been successfully installed, take so long to receive the GUID?  Cheers J

I am creating a report that will eventually use parameters to replace the hard data.  The query works; however, the problem I am having is there are multiple last starts time.  What do I need to do to use only the latest "Last Start" SELECT DISTINCT      vComputer.Name, vComputer.[User], vComputer.[OS Name], vComputer.[IP Address], vComputer.Domain, Inv_AeX_AM_Monthly_Summary.[Last Start], DATEDIFF(day,                       Inv_AeX_AM_Monthly_Summary.[Last Start],GETDATE()) AS [# of Days Last Used], Inv_AeX_AM_Monthly_Summary.[Run Count],                       Inv_AeX_AM_Monthly_Summary.[Total Run Time], Inv_AeX_AM_Monthly_Summary.[Product Name],         ...

I came across a handy link to a tool from Microsoft for creating bootable USB sticks from your Windows 7 (or Vista or Linux) bootable DVD ISO file.  IanAtkin posted another method here, but this is an official MS tool.  I haven't done much testing with it myself (I only have a 2GB USB stick handy currently) but it seems you can use it to "burn" a bootable DVD ISO of any sort to USB quickly and easily...and it will apparently burn DVD ISOs as well to a DVD burner.  From my brief testing, it only seems to work with DVD ISOs, but not CD ISOs. You can download it from the Microsoft Store.

I suppose everyone is always looking for that little bit of extra information in terms of the available reports. The attached one deals with package servers which from a client agent perspective are not responding in a specified number of days. The difference which has been added to it is that due to us having rather non descriptive names assigned to our package servers so,  wanted to see a real site name associated with it. This is what I came up with, see attached. Something I have wanted is to know if the package server is actually syncing (other than looking in the normal way by seeing if the number of available packages are increasing or decreasing)...if anyone can add something to this which give that level of detail and post it back it would be appreciated :) Regards Jacques
