We are testing CMS7 in our lab environment and have encountered problems with WOL.
We are able to reboot and shut the pc down however we cannot "wake" it up.
The settings in the BIOS are correct and we can wake it up from the DS but not from the NS.
Any suggestions?

I'm having trouble understanding the relationship of some of the tables in Symantec_CMDB created by NS7.
Can you describe how ResourceAssociation and ResourceTypeHierarchy fit into the bigger picture?
I'm specifically looking at it from a Patch Management perspective and trying to understand the chain of relationships from a particular Bulletin, to a specific update, the inventory rules associated, etc.
Thanks,
Mitch

I would like to be able to generate a report on the usage of the individual components of Microsoft Office. Currently, I noticed that excel, powerpoint, etc are catalogued under one application name: "Microsoft Office XP".
I've checked the AeXAMInventory.txt and AeXAMDiscovery.txt file and both files seem to list these components as Microsoft Office XP.
Is there a way to modify the software metering configuration on the client so that the individual components can be catalogued under their own application name ? Or to have a runtime report that lists these components individually ?
We're running Altiris Notification Server 6.5 ...

Currently the design of Symantec Management Platform requires the end user to download a large file (getting larger almost every two weeks). This is true of the symantec.pl.xml [1] file as well as the PMImport files for Patch Management Solution.
Wouldn't it be better and more efficient if the files downloaded were broken down into very small chunks (for patch we could have a file per Microsoft Bulletin)?
In addition using differential mechanism such as what's in use in source version control (I'm thinking about Git here, in use for the Linux kernel as well as many Gnome or open source projects). This could ensure only the changed files are downloaded which in SQL intensive process such as the PMImport is reduced to what is required only and no more.

One trick I use to speed up my daily administration involves using some IE search prefixes. Basically these allow you to type a short keyword followed by your search term and hit enter to go to a site. You can set these using TweakUI in the Internet Explorer > Search section, or manually create them in the registry. A few I use on a daily basis are "akb #####" to go to Altiris KB articles, "mskb ######" to go to MS KB articles, and "bulletin 09-062" to go to a particular security bulletin. You can save each "Code" section below as a .reg file and merge it into your own registry to set these up. So then you can type "akb 50212" into your Address bar and go directly to Altiris KB article 50212. Hopefully someone else finds these as convenient as I do.

I remember some thread on the old Altiris forum when people would ask if the Altiris Agent and Notification Server was a multi-threaded application capable of spreading its workload on many CPU or cores.
My answer back then was that the NS, SQL or the Altiris Agent are always capable of creating more threads than you would have cpu cores. It still holds to this day of course.
And lately multi-threading has been biting me on the back side, so to say ;). I have been working with our developers on a quirky problem with the task synchronization agent (the COM component that handles the scheduling, execution and dependencies verification of Sequential Software Delivery tasks).
The problem encountered by a customer is show here:
When a Sequential Task is running and taking some times, we have some failure if a user logs on the computer. The task is set to run, whether a user is logged or or not, using the system account.
What happens is that the user logging triggers a run of the...

One of the great design decision behind the Notification Server design was to set it to run on top of IIS. In this manner the NS team didn't have to worry about scalability: this was all done by Microsoft thanks to the improvements made from IIS 4 to IIS 5 and now IIS 6 (IIS 7 is not yet in use for Altiris).
However one of the (minor) downside to the design is that there are a number of elements that are not necessarily clear or well known about the underlying architecture and configuration items.
So in this article we will review the components involved and some of the configuration items, from a workstation or package server agent all the way up to the client config manager objects.
Here is an overview of the elements we will review today (click to open in a new windows):
Starting from the client we know that the Altiris Agent communication interfaces are provided by the Notification Server on http or https using the IIS configuration (by...

I'm looking to build either a collection or report on what computers have less than 2GB of RAM installed. After running some default reports and building collections that I would think would work I seem to get a discrepancy in my numbers. Do you guys have any best practices or sample reports to get these numbers correct?

We've been using Help Desk Solution for years and have never lost the ability to create New Incidents, access Reports, Tasks, perhaps other issues are wrong that we haven't yet tested. We can bring up the Worker View and find incidents, but the New Incidents feature disappeared from the Dashboard View and isn't working if we go to it directly. We noticed Reports and Tasks not working yesterday, then, today, the New Incidents disappeard. We know it's involving NS.
We've put in a critical call to Symantec. Has anyone had a similar problem?

Hello,
I am having an issue with manually starting the Software Update Cycle for MS Patches in the Software Update tab of the Altiris Agent version 6.0.2394. The Start Software Update Cycle link is disabled. I cant manually start the Software Update Cycle for some reason. I have the "Allow user to initiate" box ticked in the Notification Server and the client machines are part of the Default Software Update Agent Configuration collection. I used to be able to manually click on the Start Software Update Cycle link. All of the patches are visible and patches are scheduled for installation in the future on a custom schedule that I have created. I am not sure what else to check?
Also, I have setup a packaging server to hold MS patches. I have installed the Altiris Agent onto the C drive. This has by default placed all of the patches onto the C drive. How can I configure the packaging server to hold the patches on another drive?
Many thanks,
Ben

Has anyone tried to work with the Symantec Software Librarian Security Role? First of all to be able to access the console you need to assign a second role. This is a known issue see the KB 46662. So I have add the test user in both groups however if I want to add a "Software Release" I get a new page with an error.
Has anyone seen the same error? I believe it is the same with the role "Symantec Software Packager" which existed in earlier versions.

I had recently set up a power policy for shut down 4 computers in my network. This worked fine for a while but now it has started to spread to other computers that I do not want shut down. I have gone into the NS and deleted the power management job but the computers are still shutting down.
as a test I went and removed the Altiris Agent from the computers and this seemed to resolve the problem but the Agent has tobe on those computers for inventory and patch management. So I put the agent back on. The power is shutting off again even though no job exists. What can I do to resolve this problem.

I wanted to post this here before logging a call for support.
We are in the first stages of deploying our new NS which has been outfitted with 12 GB of memory. I was reviewing the specs for the person deploying the server and noticed that in article 45597 it says to enable AWE memory for the Notification Server in large environments (which is what we have).
A look through the NS 7 SP2 installation guide shows no instructions on how to configure this on any platform. Doing some more KB digging I found KB article # 3977, but it has no explicit instructions for Windows Server 2003 SP2. My assumption is the instructions are similar.
I am a little confused because 3977 appears to be configuration settings to account for on box SQL, but that is said to not be supported for large environments. If this is the case, then why is AWE memory listed as a suggestion in 45597? Is it even something the NS application supports? It's a shame that the...

Hi,
i have just set up a new installation of NS7 with the Dell console and client manager. Although everything seemed to install fine I receive the following error when I go to set up Microsoft Active Directory Import:
An error occured while retrieving import rules from the Directory web service.
There are no errors in the Application or system event logs.
I have installed NS7 on a Windows 2003R2 Service Pack 2 member server and the NS version iformation is:
Dell Version 1.0.80
Dell Management Console 1.0.2
Symantec NS version 7.0.5201
All other areas of NS7 seem to be working fine it's just the Active Directory import that isn't working. Does anyone have any idea what could cause this error and what I need to do to fix it ?
Thanks
Regards,
Terry

Hi All,
Not aware of any environment changes, but I went to jump into my Altiris console this morning and was able to get into the Help section, and a few other places (Seems anywhere that doesn't have to query the DB) and I get the Console error message pop up after awhile.
Checked the Altiris Log Viewer and this is what I can see...

In rev 7, there is a large catalogue of known about software which is supposed to make discovering and managing sowftare easier by automatically identifying installed software using rules.
One thing puzzles me though the catalogue/library software records seem to have empty fields where I would expect to see populated fields. For example the rule for detecting the installation of piece of software is blank and the files associated with the application are also blank. I am sure that the 80,000 entries in the catalogue contain the rules and files but where are they and why can;t we see them? It is rather confusing, unless I am missing something?

Below is a customized report to display the OS Name, OS Revision, Client Name, and OS build number.
This report works for both all PCs managed via Altiris, regardless of OS.
SELECT DISTINCT
T1.[OS Name] AS 'OS Name',
T1.[OS Revision] AS 'OS Revision',
T1.[Name] AS 'Name',
T1.[OS Build Number] AS 'OS Build Number',
T0.[Guid] AS 'Guid'
FROM [vResourceEx] T0
INNER JOIN [Inv_AeX_AC_Identification] T1
ON T0.[Guid] = T1.[_ResourceGuid]
WHERE (T1.[OS Revision] LIKE '%'
AND (T0.[IsManaged] = 1
AND T1.[OS Name] LIKE '%'))
With some modifications this custom report serves as an excellent base to create custom collections for software distribution. This can be accomplished by modifying the following report entries and then generating a collection from the reports SQL
WHERE (T1.[OS Revision] LIKE '%'
andT1.[OS Name] LIKE '%'
For example...
