One trick I use to speed up my daily administration involves using some IE search prefixes.  Basically these allow you to type a short keyword followed by your search term and hit enter to go to a site.  You can set these using TweakUI in the Internet Explorer > Search section, or manually create them in the registry.   A few I use on a daily basis are "akb #####" to go to Altiris KB articles, "mskb ######" to go to MS KB articles, and "bulletin 09-062" to go to a particular security bulletin.  You can save each "Code" section below as a .reg file and merge it into your own registry to set these up.  So then you can type "akb 50212" into your Address bar and go directly to Altiris KB article 50212.  Hopefully someone else finds these as convenient as I do. After enlarging my system partition c: Altiris Recovery cannot find its own partition anymore. I can't find any hint in the manual what I can do in this case. Of course I should had to think it over before altering any partition but there are no comments what I had to do first before changing volume sizes. Now I even cannot use the panel because Altiris always wants to restart the computer. But even restarts do not make any result: at the first restart there is "panic error" and I have to turn off the computer manually, after the second start everything is as before. Is there a way to reinitiate the recovery partition? Best regards Harald

One of the challenges that you may face as you scale up your Recovery Solution environment is keeping track of how much free space is left on your Recovery clusters.  It was easy enough to generate a simple report to sum up all the SpaceUsed, SpaceFree, and MaxSize columns in the RawVolume table (which tracks the storage space for each storage location you define in your RS Cluster configuration).  I converted that simple report into a iterative query using a cursor that checks free space for each RS cluster, adds that to a temp table, then exports all the results and emails them to a defined list of users via email.  Quite a time-saver when you have ~16 Recovery Clusters to keep an eye on! To use it, just import it into your NS console with Recovery Solution installed, edit the Email Automated Actions, enable the Policy, then click "Test Notification Policy".  Just like that, you'll get a daily snapshot of Recovery space utilization...

I've installed Recovery Solutions 7.0 and pushed out clients successfully but the clients can't connect to the server. The ports are opened, the cluster and server seems to be working just fine. I can't figure it out.

Does anyone know if it is possible to recover files from the image Altiris creates on a hard drive backup as opposed to restoring the entire image.  My laptop was always backed up by Altiris, then on a business trip it was stolen.  My new laptop is several years newer so I really on need some specific files.  Is this possible in any way?  Am I asking the question the wrong place? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Bob Davis

I am evaluating Altiris recovery solution and have run into an issue.  I am unable to successfully recover a workstation that is using safeboot disk encryption.  I have found articles stating the safeboot and local recovery agent do not work, is it the same for safeboot and Server-only RS agent?

We are running Altiris Revocery Agent 6.2 sith SP2. In looking at the Knowledge Base, Sata drives are not supported nor are they supported in SP3. Is there a hotfix that I am missing? Thanks.

I have used Altiris Recovery Agent to backup my laptop to an external hard drive.  Recently my laptop was stolen.  I have a replacement laptop and have reinstalled the Altiris Recovery Agent software (6.2).  How can I view the image on the hard drive and recover some files?  I am not interested in rolling back the entire image just retrieving some specific files.  I have connected the harddrive to other PCs and it will not recognize my old partition.  Starting up the software wants to create a new partition. Thanks for any help. - Bob

I just installed Symantec Installation Manager and from that I installed Altiris Recovery Solution. During the installaton a 30days trial license was installed (since I got Internet connection, otherwise it would've been only 7days). But I have a NFR license that is for more than 10 nodes and would last onger than 30days. The problem is that when I try to update that license into recovery solution from the Symantec Installation manager, I get a notice that since the NFR issue date is older than the present trial, the NFR will not replace the present license. So my question is: would be possible to remove the present trial license in order to be able to update it with the older issue date, or is the only way to uninstall the recovery solution and to install it again and during the install choose the nfr trial license file? Can anyone confirm/deny the existence of a functioning client with Windows 7 support for RS6.x? If not, can somebody confirm that there will or will not definitely be Windows 7 support in RS7, ever? (Accoridng to the RC7 release notes, I don't see any sign of Windows 7 support). If so, when? We have a bunch of systems we want to migrate to 7 pretty soon, but if we can't back anybody up, this is indeed a huge problem. Thanks very much y'all. J!

There is a Recovery Solution "Best Practices" KB article (KB47687) that shows a nice dashboard on page 7.   My question is, does anybody actually see this page when they open their management console and select Home/Recovery Home?  What I see is a mostly empty right hand panel with just a Recovery Solution header and an "Edit" button.  If I click the edit button, I can select from several "web parts", but none of them are the pie charts and graphs shown in the KB article.  Was this functionality removed before the product was released, or did my upgrade fail in some way?

We have 150 licenses for use with the Altiris Recovery Solution.  We upgraded to version 6.2.2801 a little while back and have been having consistent issues since that time.  We intially had an (re-)install type screen popping   up on every machine that previously had the client installed.  We made it past that issue, however we do not want this to happen again... We have approximately 40 PC's that SHOULD have the agent installed to them and be being backed up, however, the Altiris reports 141 licenses IN-USE.  By using the pre-created report "," there are 132 computers with the agent installed.  How are more licenses in-use than agents installed?  How do I correct this and remove the agent silently from those 90+ machines that should not be being backed up?  I do not want end-users to know that the client is being touched (removed). A second issue is space contstraints that we have recently...

Hi Everyone, Sorry for the newbie question as I have no experience with Altiris.  Can an Exchange server be properly recovered using Altiris Full System Recovery (server based) and does anyone know the steps at a higher level or can anyone direct me to the proper documentation?  I have found the documentation on to perform a Full System Recovery, but am unsure what gets restored when it's an Exchange server, ie; once a full recovery is done, then is a restore of Exchange required or if the Full snapshot contains Exchange data, what happens? Also, does it work if the existing hw that the Exchange server was running on is no longer functional? ie; disaster scenario. Thanks in advance...

I have several client computers that when a snapshot is started, it just stops and the Snapshot screen closes. In the Services, Altiris Recovery Solution Agent stops. This happens again and again. I have uninstalled and reinstalled. In the XP Pro System Log, it adds an entry 7034 that says: "The Altiris Recovery Solution Agent service terminated unexpectedly. It has done this 2 time(s). Background infromation is all computers are on a domain (about 220) with a dedicated Recovery server. Thank you for your time.

Hello there! right now we have a good backup system using some external drives, and scheduling backups. I am looking at Altiris Recovery Solution and would like to know what you guys think about it. what are some nice features that it has, and if its simple to setup and configure. I am looking for something that can keep different versions of files backed up and that would make the work of recovering a file, folder, or even teh hard drive simple.   would you guys recommend the altiris recovery solution?

Hello, I have had two users that have been getting pop-ups periodically telling them that some files are corrupt and unreadable. The errors seem to coincide with a snapshot on their system.  The attached file shows this for inetsrv but it happens for other files as well, and sometimes it even says \???? as the file. Generally the file location is in C:\Windows\System32.  I have had them run checkdisk several times, each repair corrects the error until the next snapshot begins processing.  At some point in time while the snapshot runs through, the errors resume.  I've also had them verify system files are correct using sfc /scannow. Perhaps the files have been corrupted for a long time and they were never accessed by the system, but I wanted to see if anyone else had run into this issue, and if there was a fix/workaround short of excluding that directory. We are running Altiris RS 6.2 SP3, build...

Prelude Initially, I wrote this about Backup Exec, because that's where I ran into this problem. I'm also a SAV & SEP veteran but don't recall seeing this heinous language in their KB articles. So maybe it's a Veritas thing. But, whatever... ...then it occurred to me that while BE may (or may not) be the only Symantec enterprise product to which the symptom applies, the cure is universal. Because it bridges a huge gap between the goals of Symantec Sales, Support, Connect, Knowledge Base, and Product Managers. So I've taken the unusual-and-hopefully-not-presumptuous step of tagging it to all available products. It is global. That kinda makes it Ideas spam, I know. Never done it before; probably never will again. Hope you can forgive me! Don Quixote Battles Symantec Two KB articles I've browsed recently contain variations on this boilerplate (emphasis mine): "There are currently no plans to address this issue by way of a patch or hotfix in the...

Since upgrading from 6.2 SP2 to 6.2 SP3 I've been having trouble installing and re-installing clients. The majority of installs / reinstalls go to the Lost Recovery Solution Agents group. Having done some investigation, it appears that the Notification Server Agent is not fully registering the clients so they are not being added to the NS database and therefore the SBS table in the Recovery Solution database doesn't have a NSWrkstaGUID entry. I've worked out that that the following command forces an entry to be added to the NS database from the client: C:\Program Files\Altiris\Altiris Agent\AeXAgentUtil.exe /Server:USEUBUKAP1 After I've done this I can run a query on the NS database and see that the client now has an entry and a GUID. However, this does not affect the RS database which still has a NSWrkstaGUID of 'NULL' (At this point it's also worth pointing out I checked KB34389- not only does the query listed to find RS clients with a...

When the Recovery Agent is pushed to a new client for the first time, the user is prompted with a 'Successful Installation' and then  after the first snapshot is taken, they are prompted again with a 'Successful Completion of their first snapshot' Is there any way to disable these messages? Steve

I'm coming from supporting Veritas Netbackup Pro where there was the aspcommandush.exe to perform renames, deletes, change backup times, stop backups, etc. Looking for the equivalent in Altiris Recovery Solution, a command line utility that performs those functions and perhaps more without needing to do it via the console. Thanks.

I have some questions regarding the best practice for backing up files such as PST files. I am evaluating whether or not to go with the Recovery solution on a limited basis in our environment.  I need to provide a backup strategy for end users in a few of our offices that store important email's in their PST files, and our Server group will not allow them to have more Exchange space or be willing to back them up on their servers locally any more.  The Server team wants all PST's currently residing on their boxes moved back locally and have the Client team figure out a way to back them up.   We are running NS 6.5 with CMS and I think I can get funding for a smaller implementation of RS, but want to make sure I can accomplish what I need too. 1.  Can you backup a file by using wild cards?   For example:  D:\*.pst  since everyone has...
