Hello all, I have a small issue. We use BESR (7-8.5.3. I so need to update all the servers) to backup our servers to near-line storage and then use our tape system to backup up those files to tape for off-site storage. What we're running into is this. We use a script to pull the iv2i files from the near-line location to different tapes. We are looking for $servername_XXXX.iv2i. Some of our servers are backed up to different tapes for DR purposes and for easier maintenance. The problem I'm having is some of the servers are not prepending with the server name for all the drives being backed up. I need set this in BESR and I can't find the option. Does anyone know where this setting is? I can't seem to find it for the life of me either during the job setup or in the options of the program. Thank you Peace

We are looking for a way to do this - either via running the setup.exe somehow or with pushing an MSI. But - we need to just install the agent, and silently without reboot.  How can this be done with the MSI? Thanks much, Matt Westveld BC Computing, Inc.

We are having an issue with our Backup Exec System Recovery Manager 7.01 database growing very large in size.  I was wondering if there was a way to shrink or clean up this database to be smaller, as 30GB seems to be very large.  I have looked at some of the database tools in the sub folder of sybase but had no luck knowing which one to use or how to use it properly This is the current file path for the database: E:\Program Files (x86)\Symantec\Backup Exec System Recovery\Manager\Services\Database\rmdb.db If you have any ideas please let me know. Thank you

BESR 6.5. I am trying to recover a W2K3SBS server as a test of our disaster recovery procedures. The only recovery that works is the Base Image. If i try to recover the server to the latest incremental it fails, infact if I try and recover to any incrementals it fails; the exchange databases are corrupted, sql instances corrupted, sql will not even run, various mmc's have lost the ability to open and numerous disk errors are reported in the Windows Event Logs. The server will boot to the desktop, but on any subsequent reboot scans the disks and spends 5-6 minutes Inserting Index file $0 into Index 40 multiple times, recovers a load of files, finds corruption on the disk, fixes it, and the server still has corrupt exchange databases, sql instances, files missing, etc etc All the image files verify as being ok within the recovery point browser. So far, version 6.5 is the only version of BESR we have not had major problems with on an almost daily basis, and now...

We are using Backup Exec System Recovery  6.5 on a Windows 2003 Exchange server to create Images. We are also using Backup Exec 11d on an other server to write backups to tape. Now we want to install a Backupexec Exchange Agent on the Windows 2003 server to create brick level backups of the mailboxes. I would like to know if this is possible without the two products interfering with each other. Kind Regards, E_L

I bought BESR desktop version 7.0 a few years ago for my personal and office computer.  My laptop harddrive died and a new one has been mailed to me.  Is my first step to use the BESR CD (can I skip the system recover DVDs that I have for my laptop)?  And lastly, does using BESR mean that I don't have to reinstall all the programs, like SPSS, Microsoft Office, etc?  Thank you.

Ok Here is the deal....   I want to update my uploaded Images ( .v2i files )  via VMware... Now on some of the images the earlier guys renamed the files and also deleted the .sv2i files.  So now I need a way to recreate the .sv2i file ( maybe in notepad ) .  I do not want to go through the long process of dropping the image on the machine and then reloading it up to the Server... Is there any way to recreate the .sv2i file?  Im using BES 8.5.5

Hi, I searched the whole site for a similar crash but only found different ones. NFR or Not for Resale NFR licenses are freely given by Symantec in specific circumstances to resellers, partners, or customers.  It could be as part of a product demonstration, for a partner’s testing or support lab, or a reseller/consultant’s use to gain familiarity with the product as part of their sales catalog.  NFRs are also “donation ware,” and can be donated through a third-party administration site such as Tech Soup. System Recovery, Version 7.0.5.29755, but having this problem with 8.0 and 8.5, running on Windows Small Business Server 2003 SP2 or R2 in all cases. The back up job is defined and runs fine for a few days, normally until just after the Sunday Base Image runs, and then.... nothing. The incremental back ups do not happen. Nothing is logged. The job doesn't fail, it just doesn't happen! Nothing in the Windows or SRS event logs. The Home Page of the SRS software gives me a big green tick telling me the server is "Backed Up" but also states I have "not yet defined and run a file and folder backup". If I try and use the "define backup" wizard it will not allow me to create a new incremental backup for the servers drives as one already exists. I have tried deleting the existing back up job, clearing the backup destination drive, and re-creating from scratch, and the same process occurs... runs for a few days and then seems...

This should be simple but apparently its not. This is what we have: Window XP SP3 environment We run Windows 2003 Server with BESR version 7.0.1.2183 Management Control version is 7.0.1.21816 BESR Agent on the workstation is 7.0.0.20351 We can install the agent on the workstation for the first time with no issues.  It shows up on the management console where we add the license and associate it to the backup schedule base on the group we have created.  All this works great....now here is where the problem comes in:  If the BESR client on the workstation has to be un-installed and re-installed for whatever the reason may be (this would also involve removing the license and un-managing the workstation in the console ...when the client is reinstalled or repaired and the PC is restarted the workstation does not re-appear in the console.  At the present time the only option that has worked is to rebuild the PC.   Any help would be truly appreciated

Prelude Initially, I wrote this about Backup Exec, because that's where I ran into this problem. I'm also a SAV & SEP veteran but don't recall seeing this heinous language in their KB articles. So maybe it's a Veritas thing. But, whatever... ...then it occurred to me that while BE may (or may not) be the only Symantec enterprise product to which the symptom applies, the cure is universal. Because it bridges a huge gap between the goals of Symantec Sales, Support, Connect, Knowledge Base, and Product Managers. So I've taken the unusual-and-hopefully-not-presumptuous step of tagging it to all available products. It is global. That kinda makes it Ideas spam, I know. Never done it before; probably never will again. Hope you can forgive me! Don Quixote Battles Symantec Two KB articles I've browsed recently contain variations on this boilerplate (emphasis mine): "There are currently no plans to address this issue by way of a patch or hotfix in the...

When a Backup Exec System Recovery(BESR) user tried to download from fileconnect mostly they end up confuse on what file to download. Let me share to you the different files you would be needing to download depeding on what kind of server you have. If you have BESR whether for the Server or Desktop/Lop top, you need 2 files to download in Fileconnect, namely the Product file and the System Recovery Disc (SRD) file. The SRD file needs to be burned into a CD after download. Or if you want a smaller SRD file to download, you can download the English version instead of the Multi-lingual: If you have BESR Manager, a separate download is needed as well as a separate license key to activate it:  Same is true if the you have the BESR Granular Restore Option, you will be needing a separate download and a separate license key: You can also click/read on the the BESR85_download_readme.pdf for more detailed documentation regarding these file...

Hello.  I just recovered my PC using a recovery point from 8/1.  The PC crashed on 9/2, but I did get the "My Documents" folder backup on 9/1. Since the recovery, I have tried to recover the My Documents (files and folders) backup from 9/1, but the software only sees back to the recovery point date (8/1), not the files and folders backup date.  Question: how you can you make BESR for the desktop see the more recent file and folder backups for recovery? Thank you

The right resource, at the right time, for the right cost Most of us never really have the time (or inclination for that matter) to design and deploy a really great solution backup strategy based on BE and/or BESR. There are a whole raft of really good partners of Symantec’s who do this and can help customers get the best out of their BE deployment as well as keep the environment up to date. In order to compliment services offered by partners there are a number of fixed priced service offerings from Symantec to help support both customers and partners accelerate the successful implementation and upgrade of Backup Exec and Backup Exec System Recovery when resources can be limited. The services are suitable for Small Business customers whose environments range in size from 1 to 10 servers. The fixed price gives the customer the comfort of knowing that the project will never exceed their allocated budgets providing a number of key benefits: Minimise the risks associated with new...

Hello All, In our field many of the times we need to migrate the data from volume-to-volume or may be folder-to-folder. In these cases simple copy paste won't help us. Recently I had ended up in the same remedy of moving B2D data from one storage LUN to another with data size crossing TB. Copy paste was giving errors, stopping in between, blah blah... Then I used these tools from Microsoft to copy the data and it worked very well. That is why I am sharing these tools to you. These are free utilities from Microsoft. RichCopy - This utility is written by a Microsoft engineer named Derk Benisch. This is nothing but the GUI version of the very popular Robocopy command-line utility. For more information and to download RichCopy refer to below mentioned link. http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/magazine/2009.04.utilityspotlight.aspx?pr=blog RoboCopy - This utility is also used for the same purpose as RichCopy. But RichCopy has number of improvements over RoboCopy. For...

I am using BESR 7.0 on a Windows Server 2003 R2 SP2. There are 2 Backup Jobs configured, one Drive Backup which is started manually and one File Backup which runs automatically in the morning. Both backups are stored on USB-harddisks. 2 problems occur: 1) During File Backup is running the VProSvc.exe process consumes about 90 - 95 % of cpu time. 2) If Symantec GUI is opened VProConsole.exe and VProSvc.exe consume about 95 % of cpu time for a couple of minutes. Found only one slider for performance in "Options --> Performance" which is set to slow. Any ideas how to solve?

We are running BESR 7.04 on several of our Windows 2003 servers; in about half of the sites the BESR console (vproconsole) takes about five minutes to open up when launched from either the system tray or the start menu. The splash screen shows up and disappears after about a minute and then the console opens up after about 5 minutes.   Have anyone seen this behaviour?   Thanks

Efficiency. That seems to be on the minds of many business leaders. Lately I have been thinking about how organizations can improve efficiency. So many businesses are brainstorming how to keep their business operating at its best without breaking the bank.   Simple steps can often have a big impact. One thing that is often pushed aside during economic downtimes is upgrading backup software.  But in the meantime, new technologies, such as server virtualization and the latest versions of Windows, have been implemented within the environment and need to be supported by the backup software.    It surprises me how often we find that organizations are operating on outdated backup software by three years or more. When you consider the significant technology improvements made with each new version, organizations are missing out on a number of key benefits that can ultimately save time and money through improved backup performance, faster recovery,...
