Just purchased BESR Desktop 8.5 and apparently it does not support Windows 7. Please issue a live update that resolves this problem.

I have some questions about encryption:
1. there's an option to protect the backups with a password without encrypting them. isn't it enough ?
2. there are 3 levels of encryption: standard, medium and high. what's the difference between them ? is it the length of the password needed to decrypt the data ?
3. is there a chance that even if i have the right password i'll not be able to decrypt my own data ,because of upgrading to a newer version, software bugs, hardware failures or any other reason ?
Thank you.

I am getting these errors upon trying to back up with BESR 8.5.5:
Error EC8F17B7: Cannot create recovery points for job: Drive Backup of (C:\), Apps (D:\). Error E7D1001F: Unable to write to file. Error EBAB03F1: Insufficient system resources exist to complete the requested service. Error E7D1001F: Unable to write to file.
Details:
Source: Backup Exec System Recovery
I found but lost a forum thread which suggested that this error could occur because not enough slack space exists for BESR's creation of a snapshot of the to-be-backed-up drive during its backup process.
I looked and saw today that BESR was trying to create a 47 GB backup on a drive with only 42 GB free space.
Is it true that BESR requires as much slack space on the drive as there is data/files to back up??
If so, is it possible to define within BESR where this snapshot should live/exist?? Perhaps on another volume with more free space??
We're presently working on freeing up...

So, like you perhaps already know, the new version of Backup Exec System Recovery got released; Backup Exec System Recovery 2010. Some things changed, that are really important. For example the Manager no longer exists. This solution got replaced by Backup Exec System Recovery Management Solution.
I do not want to give a summary of the differences or pros and contras, I only want to talk about one fact that, in my opinion, is a absolute disaster:
If I'm not wrong (and I really searched all the information to this issue) you will be not able to migrate you storage destinations, jobs, schedules and so on from the Manager into the Management Solution. This means, that you will have to re-create you whole backups again!
Why in the world is that not possible? I already know customers of ours who will definitely go crazy.
The only information I found is, that you can migrate from BESR Solution to BESR Management Solution. Alright, great. So where is the difference and why...

I remember using some key combination would present you with an advanced option menu within the SRD environment giving you other options during a Restore job, however I do not remember what the key combos were and now I can't seem to find those options. Can someone help me with this one. As a hint, I remember one of the special options being related to not scanning for new drivers during a Restore Anywhere job.
Thanks and sorry for my lack of clarity on it as I haven't used the options in a while.

Hi,
I am testing BESR and tried to backup our Exchange 2003 server today, aftewr about 6% the systems seems to freeze and I could not do anything with it. Even after ending the program the server was still unusable until i did a hard reboot.
Any ideas what could be causing this, the server is 5 yrs old but onlt has 70 mailboxes so it not under a massive load.
Do you need tohave plenty of drive space available, i.e does the system cache the backup on the system 1st so if the Exchange db is say 50GB you will need atleast 50GB spare on the drive?
The backup was standard except i ticked the VSS option
Any guidance is appreciated.

Newbie question here. I will be running BESR 8.5 Desktop edition on a peer-to-peer network that consists of two computers (running Win XP Home) and one NAS device (Netgear ReadyNAS). The readme file says:
If you are using a network location as your backup destination, make sure that you have provided a valid network user name and password.
If I intend to back up from the comuters to the NAS, do I need a "valid network user name and password." So far as I am aware, I don't have passwords on my peer-to-peer networking.
TIA.

On one server running BESR 8.5.5 and the Altiris BESR NS Agent. There's an "orphaned" backup job on the server that I cannot delete or modify, the backup job was created and pushed on many server using the Altiris "BESR Integration Component". I tried disabling all backup jobs in Altiris hoping this would make the job disapear, it did on every servers with this backup job assigned to it but it didn't disappear on one specific server. Can I manually delete a backup job that is locked by the Altiris Console? Would completely reinstalling BESR on the server fix the problem? Thanks in advance.

Hi,
I recently trialled the Symantec Backup Exec System Recovery Management Console application that allows you to manage multiple servers running Backup Exec System Recovery (Version 8.0).
We found it was not really that reliable and decided to un-install the Management Console and also the client software installed on each server.
The problem now is that the Backup Exec System Recovery application still says that it is being managed by the Management Console, if you try to edit a scheduled back up the following message is shown:
The backup job Drive (Backup name) is controlled by a central management system. Contact your system administrator.
So we are un-able now to edit / ammend existing backup schedules.
I have removed the Backup Exec System Recovery Management client software from each server and have re-booted each server, and still cannot control / ammend our backups.
Any ideas?

Hi,
I searched issues for my problem in many threads but no solutions.
Here it is :
On many Windows 2K8 or 2K3 servers, scheduled backups failed with this message ( in French ) :

We use the 8.5.5 version of BESR and all recommendations have been done : defrag, chk, ...
The destinations are NAS or USB HDD with same issue.
Manual backup work fine.

I have configured the SMTP email messaging which works. The problem I have is that the email message doesn't tell me anything about which computer send the notification. Please consider adding a text field that could be appended to the email message so that we would know which computer had a problem and not have to check everyone that uses Backup Exec System Recovery.

Hello all,
I have a small issue. We use BESR (7-8.5.3. I so need to update all the servers) to backup our servers to near-line storage and then use our tape system to backup up those files to tape for off-site storage. What we're running into is this. We use a script to pull the iv2i files from the near-line location to different tapes. We are looking for $servername_XXXX.iv2i. Some of our servers are backed up to different tapes for DR purposes and for easier maintenance. The problem I'm having is some of the servers are not prepending with the server name for all the drives being backed up. I need set this in BESR and I can't find the option. Does anyone know where this setting is? I can't seem to find it for the life of me either during the job setup or in the options of the program.
Thank you
Peace

the error i posted in https://www-secure.symantec.com/connect/forums/error-ed800002a is BACK!!!!

So Then Ran the Live update manual update, from Symantec website
Ran Liveupdate again and still said i had the latest version
in liveupdate there is no option for Backup Exec System Recovery.
Downloaded the 8.5.5 patch below
ftp://ftp.support.veritas.com/pub/support/products/Backup_Exec_System_Recovery_Server_Edition/
and it states Gives the follwoing error
The upgrade patch cannot be installed by the window installer service because the program to be upgraded may be missing, or the upgrade patch may be a different ot the program. Verify that the program exists on you computor and that you have the correct upgrade patch."
the file i downloaded was
Symantec_Backup_Exec_System_Recovery_8.5.5_Patch_335028.exe
Am I downloading the wrong patch? or doing anything...

After installation BESR 8.5.3 it's not possible to make a normal restart of our Server with Windows 2003 R2 Stanard SP2.
You can use special tools, or a script with "shutdown.exe" or do it manual. It doesnot work.
The server is hanging up when he is going down. And the you have always to push the "reset-button" on the Server.
And if you deinstall the BESR, you can restart the server without any problem.
Anyone an idea whats happend ?

We are looking for a way to do this - either via running the setup.exe somehow or with pushing an MSI.
But - we need to just install the agent, and silently without reboot. How can this be done with the MSI?
Thanks much,

I need to migrate my hardware platform. Current hw has {on a single physical volume} WinXP Pro on primary partition C:, extended partition with WinXP Pro on logical drive D:, applications are installed on logical drive E:, and data is keep on logical drive F:.
I’ve done a backup of c:, d:, e:, and f: with restore anyware licensed. I can do a restore of all the volumes. C: boots properly and I can get the required drivers to install. D: will boot but gets BSOD and immediate reboot. I can boot d: in safe mode with networking and install all the needed drivers (based on Device Manager showing no ? devices). However, d: will not boot in normal mode (get BSOD, but it happens so fast I cannot see error code/info).
Looking for ideas on how to resolve.

Whenever I try to install LightsOut Restore using the easyinstaller it always fails. I get the message saying i should look at the log files in the folder Documents and Settings/All Users/Application Data etc.
I have tried to include the LightsOut Restore in a complete easyinstaller package (with everything in it), when i tried to install this, the same thing happend. So then I tried to only include LightsOut Restore in an easyinstaller package, once again the installation failed. Then i tried downloading the easyinstaller package for LightOut Restore from the Download Center which can be accessed in the BESRM by clicking Tools > Client download information, once again, installation fails. So then i tried to install it manually on a pc using the Recovery Disk, It worked like a charm.
So, it works manually, but our company is quite big. I cant possibly go to all outside locations and install this manually on every server we got. This has to be do-able with the...

Hi All,
I'm about to downsize my Exchange Server 2007 SP1 which is also resides in my Domain Controller, it is now using less than 400 GB spread across 4 different partitions:
Dell utility partition 50 MB
C:\ OS 50 GB
D:\ Database 200 GB
F:\ Empty 0 MB
L:\ TransactionLOG 800 MB
it is now installed on 5x400 GB SAS 10k rpm RAID 5,
The target server is the same specs but the Hard Disk is 2x 400 GB SAS 10k RPM RAID 1 which give me around 378 GB of usable space.
How shall I proceed with the backup and restoration ?
Should I backup using the Online BESRO 8.5 into another USB hard disk while the OS still working or cold boot using the SRD ?
Any idea would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

Hi,
Is there a forum for BESR 2010 yet? I'm trying to run a virtual conversion job and it keeps failing because it can't access the temporary file location. Has anyone seen this? Any ideas? It is BESR 2010 on Win XP. I've tried both a local drive and a NAS for the temp location and it still says it can't access it. The permissions are fine. Suggestions welcome!
Thanks.

Hi,
I am having a problem where BESR 8 is causing Backup Exec 12 to hang indefinitely if the BESR job launches while a Backup Exec job is in progress. The BESR job completes but the Backup Exec job goes into a waiting state and never recovers. The job continues to run long after the maximum configured run time (Options -> Job Defaults -> Enable automatic cancellation for selection list -> Cancel backup job if not completed within: XX Hours). When trying to cancel the job manually, the status just changes to "Cancel Pending" and nothing happens. Is there anything I can do to cancel the job?
Obviously I have to adjust the schedules so this conflict doesn't happen but I don't think it should to begin with... is there a fix for this?
Thanks.

Hi All,
I have installed BESR on the servers, one installed as control console and the others have client software installed. Clients will save the backups to a network share on the server. I found the security log on the server is filled with Logon/off events created by BESR. I know this because I have checked the sessions on the network share. All the sessions are created by the client computer and they will all open the BESR network share. I have tried to close these sessions. However, after one minute, they will reconnect. The server event log is filled with these logs and I cannot check other valuable logs.
Any idea about how to resolve this issue? Is there a magic button I can press in BESR to turn this off?
Thank you.

On two occasions now we have attempted to use the BESR 8.5 option to recover to different hardware for a Small Business Server. One was SBS2003 and the other SBS2008. On both occasions when the server was restarted after the restore we were prompted to login as ".\Administrator"
When we tried to specify a domain and the correct admin ID and password it failed to find the domain.
In the case of the SBS2003 we were actually restoring to the original hardware so we redid the restore without the restore anyware option (or whatever it is called). This worked fine.
In the case of the SBS2008, it was only a test run. We gave up and tested another vendors solution which worked ok.
I have not been able to find any furthur information on this. Given that it happened to us twice it sounds like a bug to me. Both SBS servers were the lone DC in the Active Directory and there was never going to be another DC to authenticate against.
Anyone else?
