I was wondering if others who have implemented DLP have all of these servers. I know it depends on what you have your DLP doing, my main question is has anyone set this up with servers sharing responsibilities.
Data Loss Prevention Enforce Platform
Data Loss Prevention Network Monitor
Data Loss Prevention Network Prevent
Data Loss Prevention Network Discover
Data Loss Prevention Network Protect
Data Loss Prevention Endpoint Discover
Data Loss Prevention Endpoint Prevent
Thanks!

Today,
you can define how much the anti-virus gets inside a zip file (up to X times). but if the zip is inside a larger amount of zip's then the anti-virus transfers it like is OK,
and it could be malicious (refer to en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zip_bomb for example).
I want to be alerted when a file is zipped for more then X times (could be 10 could be 100) and I want to be able to block zip files that are zipped for more then X times.
Its a serious threat that isn't dealt by any Security company.
It could also refer to Vontu DLP with its file scanning engine (it could be a way to extract confidential data outside the organization)
It could also refer to Bright Mail when it receives malicious mails.
Hope to see it soon.
Thanks.

I am running Vontu reports and I am having a problem when trying to export the report. When you have multiple pages of incidents to export to excel even if you select "Select All", it does not work. How can I export the entire report.
Thanks, Monica

This week, Symantec participated in the 5th Annual IT Security Automation Conference held in Baltimore from October 26-30. This event is jointly sponsored by National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), National Security Agency (NSA), Defense Information Systems Agency (DISA), Department of Homeland Security (DHS).
The event brought together some of the leading organizations in government and industry seeking to address the basic challenge a common approach to securing government environments and information. And while the notion of common security standards isn’t new, the amount of initiatives that have complicated this area seems to be growing exponentially. The conference touched on a number of top IT initiatives that provide the top challenges and drive the most important security initiatives in government today:
Cloud Computing
Health Information Technology (IT)
Health Information Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA)

Symantec opens up its DLP platform today with the introduction of Symantec Data Loss Prevention 10. As organizations strive to center their security strategies around information, data loss prevention becomes essential. Symantec Data Loss Prevention 10 will allow companies to apply encryption and enterprise rights management (ERM) based on content and will integrate with additional Symantec solutions.
We’re excited that Symantec DLP now has easy hooks into GigaTrust, Liquid Machines, Microsoft, Oracle and PGP Corporation. And, of course, we work well with our own solutions – Control Compliance Suite, MessageLabs Hosted Email Encryption and Symantec Workflow.
More details in today’s press releases:

Why does Symantec not have an offering for Endpoint Monitor and Endpoint Protect?
I think that this should be available via the Vontu acquisition
If this is appliance based, does it have a limitation in its ability to view the entire environment and it is thought that appliance-based products may have “blind spots” on the network and to other end points

Which Regular Expression "Engine" does Vontu use?
When authoring regular expressions, it's useful to know what RegEx features can be used, determined by which "Engine" actually does the expression matching. For example, a popular engine is "PCRE", which offers Perl-compatible expressions, such as the \d shortcut for the character range [0-9].
Some Engines offer metacharacters and qualifiers which make it easier to write "efficient" regexes, ones which do not perform excessive backtracking or otherwise can be written so they consume less CPU while trying to find a match.
Which metacharacters are supported with Vontu for Email and Vontu Endpoint Agent?

The October 2009 issue of CIO Digest is now available now, featuring a interviews with IT leaders from organizations such as Her Majesty’s Government, Red Robin International, Midland Realty, the Renault F1 Team, among others, as well as an Executive Q&A with Adrian Chamberlain. It also includes a solutions feature on endpoint virutalization and an industry feature on local government IT challenges and strategies.
The exclusive interview (cover story) with John Suffolk, the CIO and CISO for Her Majesty's Government (HMG), provides readers will insight into the overarching strategies that are driving IT decision making for HMG. Specifically, when former Prime Minister Tony Blair commissioned the Transformational Government initiative, Suffolk was given the charge to deliver new public services via the power of new technologies. The initiative touches on all aspects of HMG; the strategic approach taken by Suffolk and the Cabinet...

Starting with the April 2009 issue, we began publishing each issue of CIO Digest to the Amazon Kindle. Readers want to consume content in a variety of different formats, and the increasingly popularity of the Amazon Kindle prompted us to begin making each issue available on it.
The July issue has some really interesting articles, including an exclusive interview with Steve Vollmer, the VP of IT and CTO at Las Vegas Sand Corporation, features on ways to optimize storage investments and strategies on weathering the 2009 economic climate, and much more. Click here to access the Amazon Kindle edition.

The latest version for Data Loss Prevention is version 9.0.
Customers who are eligible for this upgrade will receive upgrade notifications but there will be no license keys. They just need to use the same key that they have for version 8.0.
If customer has just purchased DLP 9.0 and he wants to downgrade to version 8.0, he can use the key for DLP 9.0 to version 8.0.
DLP 9.0 key is backwards compatible to 8.0.
DLP 8.0 key is forwards compatible to 9.0

Everyone knows USB drives are a huge chance for losing data. I found a way to make that worse.
I bought a USB drive for my wife to use on her personal laptop. We all carry at least one of these. Her drive stopped be recognized, let alone work on the system.
Since it had only been used 3 times, i wanted the manufacturer to replace it under warranty. They offered to exchange it only if i send it back with drive intact. I was shocked that they required me to send it back. They had a fax number that if i was with the government and can send letterhead of such an organization asking to not send the drive, and they will exempt it.
So a new drive cost $60-$150 depending on size. Having personal, let alone any corporate data on the drive and it falls into the wrong hands, which if it is being sent in a box that says what company makes the drive or is addressed to the company, it would be easy for someone to take a look inside to...

Prelude
Initially, I wrote this about Backup Exec, because that's where I ran into this problem. I'm also a SAV & SEP veteran but don't recall seeing this heinous language in their KB articles. So maybe it's a Veritas thing. But, whatever...
...then it occurred to me that while BE may (or may not) be the only Symantec enterprise product to which the symptom applies, the cure is universal. Because it bridges a huge gap between the goals of Symantec Sales, Support, Connect, Knowledge Base, and Product Managers. So I've taken the unusual-and-hopefully-not-presumptuous step of tagging it to all available products. It is global.
That kinda makes it Ideas spam, I know. Never done it before; probably never will again. Hope you can forgive me!

Two KB articles I've browsed recently contain variations on this boilerplate (emphasis mine):

Information Week has been running a "Rolling Review" of different DLP products in the marketplace. Of the 6 products they reviewed only two of them stood out. RSA's DLP Suite and Symantec's DLP Suite were the best of the products they reviewed.
Here is the summary of the review: http://www.informationweek.com/news/security/privacy/showArticle.jhtml?articleID=219501230
Also here is the specific review of Symantec DLP: http://www.informationweek.com/news/security/attacks/showArticle.jhtml?articleID=218900115
Enjoy and drop me a note if you have any questions in regards to Symantec DLP
