Hi, I'm hoping someone can help.
Across all of our Optiplex systems none are reporting their Display Inventory.
In the local event log this is displayed on the detection process
0011: The following display assets have been discovered on this computer -
1. DELL E248WFP, ID=DELA02D, S/N=xxxxxxxxxxx, Age=6851 hours
Display asset attributes have been written to c:\program files\softosd\softosd.mif
If I run the display inventory task it fails with the error Unsupported device.
Hope someone can help with this.
Many Thanks
John

Hi,
I have recently setup DCM 3.0.2 and have succesfully managed to get the product to do the following:
Install in a Virtual 2003 environment
Succesfully discovered machines on the domain
Installed the Altiris client to a few test machines.
Discovered Dell clients and pushed the Dell Client manager agent (the count now shows 0 machines without the Dell client manager Agent)
The problem now however is i am unable to run any Hardware management task on any of the machines. The error returned when the task hasn't run is 'Timed out waiting for the task server to process this task'
When i look on the client machines it details the following in the log files ' <![CDATA[CTaskServerNetCommsConnection::CheckResponseXml(): The task server returned an error: <![CDATA[System.Net.Sockets.SocketException: No connection could be made because the target machine actively refused it 127.0.0.1:50121
I have restarted the server, checked the account permissions, checked local...

I cannot seem to get the Determine Windows Patchable Servers tasks to run on my servers. It just sits on "Waiting for client to get the task". I try to manually Check for tasks from the client but no dice.
Anyone else seen this?

I installed the Dell Management Console in my NS7 build. I have deployed the Altiris Agent to my servers but none of my Dell Servers are showing up in any Dell filters. Am I missing something? In NS6, there were Dell discovery and rule engine packages but I find none of that in the new version.
Any help is appreciated.

The purpose of this Monitor Pack is to Monitor for Fault related alerts only. This pack does not collect any performance related data, it is light weight.
This Pack includes the HDD Monitor Pack for Hard Disk Predictive Failure Alerts which can be used together with Backup so when a disk is potentially failing you could run a backup task to ensure latest data is safe:
The Monitor Pack Monitors the following:
Disk Drive Alert
System Errors
System Errors due to Serious Failure normally resulting in Dump File creation (you could create a Task that will collect the Dump and place into central Share for troubleshooting)
Application Error
System Disk Error due to Delayed Write Failure
Windows Services Status for (Crypto, DHCP, DNS, Network Connections, Plug and Play, Print Spooler, RPC and Workstation)
I hope this pack is found useful and please feel free to add to this Monitor Pack.
Please note that this pack does not provide any remediation action, these can be added as...

According to the IANA assignment , TechPosters published a nice poster in PDF file that shows common ports using a graphical design to give also information about ports used for Chat, Gaming, Malicious, Peer to Peer , etc. applications.
The Techposters website, where I found this poster, is a collection of quick reference guide posters in pdf format. They have been collected from various sources on the Internet and available for IT admins and many other users interested in many operating systems. These tech posters covers Unix, Linux and Microsoft operating systems and also software programs, platforms and scripts.

I had a call from a customer yesterday. They had a vulnerability that had to be fix by end of day, and it was 3 pm when I got the call.
He was not the deployment server admin, and had minimal access into DS, but the admin was not available. Passwords were getting locked out due to the issue.
Opening up the console just pulled up the sql connection option. So here are the few steps to check:
1. Check what services are running, Altiris services need to be running, Altiris Deployment services (2-3 of them), and Altiris Express service, Restarting will show if the account is locked.
2. Check the ODBC connections, Administrative tools, Data Sources (odbc) -> System -> (express service) -> test the connection
3. Check SQL services to make sure they are running.
We went on to build a new job to deploy the patch, that is for another post.

I am currently using a MS sql server 2005 database for Dell Openmange. When I do an install of The newest Dell Management console on a new win 2003 server and try to attach to this old database I get the following error.
'The database 'ITAssist' selected on the SQL Server specified is not an NS 7 database. Please change your selection to specify an existing NS7 database or specify a database name to create that does not already exist.'
Any ideas?

Prelude
Initially, I wrote this about Backup Exec, because that's where I ran into this problem. I'm also a SAV & SEP veteran but don't recall seeing this heinous language in their KB articles. So maybe it's a Veritas thing. But, whatever...
...then it occurred to me that while BE may (or may not) be the only Symantec enterprise product to which the symptom applies, the cure is universal. Because it bridges a huge gap between the goals of Symantec Sales, Support, Connect, Knowledge Base, and Product Managers. So I've taken the unusual-and-hopefully-not-presumptuous step of tagging it to all available products. It is global.
That kinda makes it Ideas spam, I know. Never done it before; probably never will again. Hope you can forgive me!
Don Quixote Battles Symantec
Two KB articles I've browsed recently contain variations on this boilerplate (emphasis mine):
"There are currently no plans to address this issue by way of a patch or hotfix in the...

I installed Dell Management Console on a quad Xeon Dell 2850 server with 2 gigs ram and 15Krpm drives. This program is so unbelievably resource intensive. Even with zero managed clients or servers, it was already eating over 1 gig of ram, and the response time to commands on the web interface was about 5-10 seconds per click. Even the install took like 4+ hours to complete. Is this really necessary? Why is this program such a monster? I can get an Exchange server up and running in that time.
I run other managemant programs on my network, like ManageEngine's "OpManager", and it takes a fraction of the resources. Besides the direct hardware management like remote BIOS updates, it has much more functionality than DMC.
So I'm not trying to troll or just complain here. My point of this post is this. I have hundreds of Dell machines- workstations, servers, SAN's, KVM's, etc. It sounds like DMC is something I need.
But...

Hi folks
I have been attempting to enable Wake on LAN features in the BIOS of a Dimension 3000 computer running Win XP SP3 - apparently the motherboard does support Wake on LAN, but the options are not available as standard in the Dell BIOS - I gather that I can use the Dell Client Configuration Utility (DCCU) to enable the necessary options using a DCCU 'BIOS Settings package', and indeed the Wake on Lan options do appear to be exposed when the DCCU is used to query the BIOS settings. My problem is, when I try to run the BIOS settings package that includes the newly enabled WakeOnLAN options, the execution of the package fails with an error that begins 'Faulting application OMCAClientModule.exe, version 3.0.1213.0'. Does anybody know why this settings package is failing? Should I be using a different version of OMCAClientModule.exe ?
Thankyou for any advice you might be able to provide in helping me out with this.
Regards

I came to the rare situation after using symantec_sim_7_0_kb45011_sp2.exe for a fresh installation, NS7-SP2 is installed but DMC Console has stil 1.0.75!!!
I took an already installed DMC with the same DMC Console 1.0.75 and I was not allowed to do the upgrade to NS7-SP2 as it says: not compatible with this version DMC Console
Official statement is support for NS7-SP2 will only come with DMC Console 1.0.2 (end of sept-2009)
Bug, undocumented feature or just lucky?

Hello All,
We have about 400 Dell D610 laptops and we would like to enable the Internal HDD Password setting. We use DCM 2.2 but this setting cannot be changed using that product. Do you know of a way to accomplish this?
DCM 3.0 doesn't allow it either from what I can see.
Best Regards,

Yes, even I'm no longer calling it NS7.
So I'm setting up the devlab with 7, and yes - I'm very fascinated by the amount of OOB support for both Dell and HP - both will make my life much easier. However, my IT management staff will freak if I show them a console branded Dell.
If you install the Dell Management Console while you bring 7 up, you'll likely be greeted with a Dell Management Console after installation.
Why HP doesn't brand, or why we don't have an option to choose the branding is fodder for some late night discussions at Vision in Vegas next year. You're going right? You know this economic slowdown thing is almost over, right? I expect to see all of you there.
In the meantime, as you're setting up your POC, or moving to 7 to satisfy your inner techie voices, here's a SQL script to revert your Symantec Management Console back to it's Symantec-y self.
Run it in Query Analyzer, and make sure you have the Symantec_CMDB selected.

Howdy all,
anyone know if the Optiplex 760 is due to be supported in Dell Client Manager?
Have downloaded the XML from solutionsam, is not in there at the moment - weird, as the 760's have been out for a while (and we've just bought a truckload of them...)
cheers,
Justin

Hello,
Do OpenManage Connection plug-ins for Microsoft Operations Manager, Tivoli, CA Unicenter, HP OpenView etc. work with Dell Management Console? Or do I need new plugins to make DMC work with those enterprise frameworks.
Thanks,
