I recently received a case where a customer wanted to test the Symantec Scan Engine functionality where it can forward a threat to a Central Quarantine server.
After a lot of testing, we were able to determien that EICAR would not be forwarded, it only get deleted. I talked with the Symantec Security Response team and they provided me with a fake macro test file that Scan Engine detected and forwarded successfully!
I am still waiting for confirmation on if this is a file that can be shared with customer as a test file. I will post it if I can!

Winfax 10.04 ISSUE - intermittent hourglass cursor in WIndows XP
We had to give our CEO a new PC - loaded Winfax 10.04 as he loves the program and threatened us if we did not put it on.
When ever we use Winfax - the PC has this constant, intermittent hourglass cursor in WIndows XP - kill the Winfax controller and associated processes and it stops.
Any ideas?
I saw someone suggested reinstall the printer but I think its something else.
Thanks!

Gluttony: Migrating more than you need to by not cleaning things up first
Organizations often use an OS migration as a time to evaluate the applications, software and other data files they have on the organization’s existing endpoints. They can also use this time to plan their go-forward imaging standards. Those organizations that don’t go through this evaluation and planning process may be migrating more than is necessary (gluttony) once they begin the migration process.
One of the first critical decisions will be determining the specific deployment standards and processes to be used during the migration and, optimally, on a go-forward basis. This could be a considerable undertaking depending on the organization and their existing processes. For example, some IT departments may manage 30+ images that quickly become a logistical nightmare, draining time and resources away from other, more critical issues. However that same company may only need five images to accomplish...

About Winsock:
The Winsock is a technical specification that defines how Windows network software should access network services, especially TCP/IP. It defines a standard interface between a Windows TCP/IP client application (such as an FTP client or a Gopher client) and the underlying TCP/IP protocol stack.
A Windows XP machine can sometimes have its WINSOCK catalog become corrupted and it appears like a network connection is disabled. In that case one of the symptoms is, if you use the ping command, it gives you arbitary characters in the output.
example: In command prompt, type
PING 127.0.0.1
you will see the reply
pinging °ÿ with 32 bytes of data
That °ÿ is the telltale sign that the WINSOCK catalog is corrupted.
You can use the netsh command utility to repair the winsock. Please enter the following command in the command prompt:
netsh winsock reset catalog
Reboot the machine. The issue will be resolved.
The command above, will reset winsock catalog...

LUST: Lusting after the latest version before figuring out what makes sense for your organization
Before organizations can successfully migrate to Windows 7, they need to know what is in front of them and then formulate the right game plan. While most businesses will benefit from upgrading, lust for the latest version can be like merging into the fast lane without checking your blind spot. If a company’s focus is solely making the switch as soon as possible, it might not take necessary precautions to minimize the time and adjustment for end users.
More importantly, a Windows migration project is not just driving a refresh of the operating system, it can also drive key decisions that will likely impact IT organizations for years to come. Organizations should take advantage of the planning time to re-evaluate hardware vendors, software vendors, security strategies and long term management strategies.
To get started you need to launch the migration project. This planning...

PRIDE: Believing that the built-in security and backup technology is all you need
Many businesses operate under the assumption that built-in security and backup technology is enough to protect their information. To be truly protected against today's increasingly complex and organized cyber attacks, you need a comprehensive, integrated security solution that provides multiple layers of protection, in addition to scalable backup.
In 2008 alone, Symantec detected more than 1.6 million new malicious code threats worldwide, according to the Internet Security Threat Report XIV. This explosion in the number of malicious code threats, coupled with the continued trend towards Web-based attacks, reinforces the growing need for cooperative security and backup responses. Individual point products and add-on functionality are no longer sufficient to protect against today’s attacks, which are designed specifically to steal sensitive information for financial gain.
Many of these...

There is a reason the 7 deadly sins are “deadly.” Lust, gluttony, greed, sloth, wrath, envy, and pride encompass the failings of human nature that cause so many problems in life.
They also accurately characterize some of the pitfalls waiting for companies that leap into a Windows 7 migration too quickly, without ensuring they are prepared. These potential pitfalls range from management to back up to security and can disrupt the entire process.
However, the deadly sins of migration can be avoided. With the right planning and tools in place, Windows 7 can be an opportunity rather than a challenge. It can give companies a blank slate on which to build a better infrastructure and implement more comprehensive security practices.
This daily blog series will explore the 7 deadly sins of a Windows 7 migration and show how these vices can be turned into virtues. Check back tomorrow for the first of our 7 blogs.

Anyone looking for Scan Engine support on RedHat 64-bit may soon get their wish granted. I got a webcase recently and it was escalated to backline who have said they put in a feature request for Scan Engine to get certified on 64-bit version of RedHat Enterperise Linux (RHEL). Currently we support 64-bit SuSe Linux Enterprise Server (SLES) and Windows 2003 and 2008 64-bit environments.
Be advised this could still be 6 months or more down the road since 5.2.6 is most likely already finished and this is something we might see in 5.2.7.
Watch this document for updates:
Title: 'Is Scan Engine 4.3.x, 5.1.x, or 5.2.x is supported on a 64-bit Redhat Linux operating system?'

Here are a few suggestions for the Symantec Licensing Portal
The ability to add a Certificate number to pull in all the licenses on that Certificate instead of adding each Serial Number.
When drilling down to the details of the license, you don’t know when it will expire. We have to go back to the original email or paper certificates to verify when we have to renew or rely on the Symantec Licensing Renewal emails.
At the portal you could prompt the user that their licenses for XYZ product is about to expire with an option to acknowledge the reminder and to not remind them again in case they intend for the license to expire.
The ability to print your original certificate from the site.
In general, better license management capabilities on the site would make life easier for IT managers who don’t' have enough licenses to qualify for the co-termination of their licenses and have their renewals spread throughout the year.

Symantec opens up its DLP platform today with the introduction of Symantec Data Loss Prevention 10. As organizations strive to center their security strategies around information, data loss prevention becomes essential. Symantec Data Loss Prevention 10 will allow companies to apply encryption and enterprise rights management (ERM) based on content and will integrate with additional Symantec solutions.
We’re excited that Symantec DLP now has easy hooks into GigaTrust, Liquid Machines, Microsoft, Oracle and PGP Corporation. And, of course, we work well with our own solutions – Control Compliance Suite, MessageLabs Hosted Email Encryption and Symantec Workflow.
More details in today’s press releases:

I installed Symantec Antivirus 10 on my XP SP3 laptop. Its a home version I get from Fidelity Investments as a corporate account. I didn't uninstall old version of Mcafee first. Installation was successful. I am logged in as administrator. Quickscan runs on auto fine but anytime I try to start Symantec Antivirus either from the Program menu or directly from the .exe I get the error message "Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item." I have since removed Mcafee. I was just on a chat with the Norton folks who sent me here saying that this was a corporate product and they couldn't help me. Samething happens in Safe Mode. I inadvertantly got Security Tool (virus) on my laptop and figure I probably have other viruses as well. I apparently have figured out how to disable Security Tool. Trying to make any positive steps in the issue, I also loaded Spybot which I use on other computers...

Don’t fall victim to piracy, educate yourself to protect yourself.
PIRACY CAN COST YOU YOUR IDENTITY!
Pirated software is more likely to contain spyware, which after installation can steal personal and confidential information (for example credit card, bank account, passwords, address book information, etc.) from your computer without your knowledge. Stolen information can be exploited immediately through pirated software by identity thieves.
PIRACY CAN COST YOU YOUR COMPUTER!
Pirated software can make your computer more vulnerable to virus attacks which can lead to loss of irreplaceable files or corruption to other software on your computer. In some cases, pirated software can lead to the destruction of your computer by permanently damaging the hard drive or other components.
Here are a few warning signs:
Too good to be true pricing:
Prices 30% below MSRP are suspicious
Purchase software only from reputable companies. When purchasing from websites make sure...

The performance, efficiency, and productivity of IT is not only dependent on the technology solutions deployed, but relies heavily on well-trained IT staff. The education and training of IT professionals has become top of mind for most IT organizations that are looking to optimize current staffing resources and measure the impact on the business through education expenditures in IT.
On behalf of Symantec’s Education Services, The Alchemy Solutions Group is developing a Business Value Analysis Market Research Report around education and training services, by conducting a confidential online survey with our customers. The objective is to analyze the business value—operational and economic impact—around technical training offerings and the business drivers behind the procurement processes.
If you’re an IT professional who participates and/or approves education & technical training services, please take a 5-10 minutes to complete the survey. Your name and...

I would like to suggest the ability to recive email notification when a new post is made to forum topics, blogs and articles etc without having to post in those threads, blogs or articles. I think this ability would be great because sometimes you want to be informed of new posts without having to contribute to the forum thread, blog or acticle or subscripting to multible rss feeds.

Recently, I logged a case using the Mysupport website. It took 1 hr 40 mins before my support entitlement was verified and the case forwarded. If the intention is to get people to log their cases using the Mysupport website, then this long lag between case creation and case approval should be drastically shortened or eliminated. Otherwise, people will continue to call tech support as the approval process is negligible once you are connected to the person logging cases.
