I have sdlt2 tapes and some of them are not that old. I have checked other posting regarding the status 84. SCSI is working. Tape drive works with other tapes. I have cleaned the tape heads but I have several tapes that can not be used. How would I check the tapes before I commit them to the circular file? I have seen one article to update net backup to 6.5.4. I am running nbu 6.5.

All,
When launching the install, everything is proceeding normally and when nearing the end of the install this is the message I'm getting:
Starting the NetBackup Notification Service.
Starting the NetBackup database manager process (bpdbm).
The NetBackup daemon process (bpdbm) was not started.
Check the services configuration -- files, YP, NIS, or NIS+.
Enter <RETURN> to continue, "x" to exit.
Could this error be causing the jnbSA administration console from loading?
Thanks, Dave

I'm a bit fuzzy on the following items for upgrdinging to ::---> 6.5.4
a:: How do I convert vault settings to a format that 6.5.4 uses....
b:: nbpushdata ::---> when to run, where to run....
Do I run just on the master? On the media servers?
c:: Remove all files in dir ::---> /usr/openv/netbackup/remote_versions
Why exactly does this need to be done?
d:: I would like to prevent jobs from kicking off under 6.5.4 Whats the best way to perform this?
Thanks....

After updating from 6.5.3 to 6.5.4 I was suprised to see an additional robotic library show up in my topology display.
A while back we had added LTO4 drives to our tape library and partioned it into two libraries one for the existing drives and one for the new LTO4 drives and media. When configuring NetBackup and scanning for devices it saw the two partions as two entirely new libraries, created new devices and storage groups. The former TLD(2) library was still listed as a robot under Devices but was shaded out and indicated it the robotic path was missing and no longer showed up on the topology. I updated the policies and duplication staging away from using that old library (was switching most of them over to the new LTO4 partion anyway). I didn't think much about it again until the other day I upgrade to 6.5.4 it suddenly there was TLD(2) appearing on my Topology screen in the console. Just the icons...

I have 14 DSSU and only 6 tape drives. It would be nice to be able to run 3 DSSU simultaneously to a single tape drive. This issue is that I can not stream enough data from a single DSSU fast enough to maximize the capasity throughput of a single LTO3 tape drive.

I have a storage lifecycle policy with 2 storage destinations:
Backup - StorageUnit1 - Fixed Retention - 2 Months
Duplication - StorageUnit2 - Fixed Retention - 2 months
We plan to use this SLP to write images to a primary disk storage unit, then duplicate those images to a secondary storage unit offsite. The goal is to hold those images on disk for 2 months. My policy is tied to this SLP on the attributes tab of the change policy screen, however my schedules show a retention of 2 weeks (level 1). I am not able to change the 2 week retention because that part is greyed out on the change schedule screen.
My question is which retention will win out? The 2 months defined by my SLP or the unmodifiable 2 week retention that shows up when viewing my schedules?
Thanks,
Layne

Can someone point me to the correct file neded to upgrade Solaris 10 client to from 5.0MP6 to 6.x? i tried http://seer.entsupport.symantec.com/docs/294657.htm but it requires a previous version. Most of our environment is Windows so we are somewhat confused with the Solaris releases.
Thanks in advance.

I'm backing up a number of Oracle databases to Netbackup (via Oracle RMAN). We have two sites:
(A) where the databases and main Netbackup media servers are located
(B) a remote site where a single Netbackup media server are located
The Netbackup media server at site A has disk staging, so the backup goes to disk on that media server before eventually being staged to tape.
Straight after the backup at site A is made, the backup is copied by Netbackup to the media server at site B.
We need to do regular restores at both sites. But for restores at site A I'd like to use the media server at A. And for restores at site B I'd like to use the site B media server. This is because the network link between the two sites is slow and the databases are large.
From within RMAN I'm allocating channels for restore like this:
allocate auxiliary channel 'tapedev1' type 'sbt_tape'
parms="BLKSIZE=1048576 ENV=(NB_ORA_CLIENT=ora-patrlp01-b,
NB_ORA_SERVER=netbackup,...

Hi All,
From JnBSA , when I go 'Media and Device Mgt' -> 'Devices' -> 'Hosts' -> 'hostA'
I get the following error message.
> The following discrepancies have been detected between the Global Device Database and

> Do you wish to synchronize the Global Device Database for this Device Host ?
>
> Type Device Reason
> Drive HPUltrium2-SCSI0 Global Database Entry Missing
> Drive HPUltrium2-SCSI2 Global Database Entry Missing
and when I click 'ok'
it throws another error prompt
'Cannot Synchronize global device database because
of a dev conflict ...
This conflicts include duplicate robot numbers and duplicate drive names.
(MM Status 5)'
FYI
tpconfig -d

I'm currently in a pickle where I was advised that the 10TB of VTL space my firm leases in our managed datacenter will be migrated to a new frame in the next 6 weeks, which in reality gives me to two weeks, since I keep everything on disk for a month. Due to additional circumstances tied into the migration which are outside of our control I've been asked to come up with alternatives.
Currently I use SLP's to cut to tape once a month. Environment has two servers, Master/Media Server w/VTL & Media Server with fiber attached MSL4048. I have no SSO for tape so it duplicates over the LAN.
That being said I found Symantec rolled up the VTL per TB licenses into flexible disk so I now have the option to leverage 10-15TB's of available HDS WMS space into a disk solution. 17 white papers, 4 manuals, 3 best practices guides, 19 cups of coffee and 7 aspirins later I decided I have two... really one viable option. ...

Hi
My first post :) I am using bperror as follows-
call bperror.exe -U -backstat -hoursago 23:59
This works very well, in a nice readable format for BB's, but for larger sites, showing all the sucessful jobs is a little too much information. I've tried other switches, but -U gives the cleanest ouput.
I could then process the output, but don't want to miss errors with mis use of grep etc. I'm also using NOM, but the output from Nom is not very freindly on the company BB's.
Ideally, I'd not show all the sucessfull jobs, just all job exit ID's greater than 1.
Any ideas?
Thanks
Dean

I have a problem when I backup the Shadow Copy Components of any Windows 2008 Server.
The backup job ends with Status Code 1. In the log of the job I find the following information:
"The job was successfully completed, but some files may have been
busy or unaccessible. See the problems report or the client's logs for more details.backup job completes partially succefully "
I am wondering the reason why.

Running NBU 6.5.2A on Solaris Master and noticed nbjm was utilising over 40% of CPU constantly. ran vxlogview for nbjm for the past 24 hours and noticed the following entries repeated from 06:47 onwards

This idea is to prevent a NetBackup Master server upgrade from being a requirement in order to support a new client type. For example, it is very painful to have to upgrade all NetBackup masters to a new code revision (testing, Q/A, change procedures, outages, etc.) to support a new client type like Windows Server 2008 R2 or SQL Server 2008. If the NetBackup code was possibly more modular, a new client could possibly be created that would still function without a NetBackup master upgrade. This is not an apples to apples comparison obviously, but the idea is similar to how one can run Outlook 2007 with an Exchange 2000 server and have almost all functionality still of the Outlook 2007 client, but without some of the advantages of Exchange 2003/2007/2010 on the back end.

This idea is for a tool to be created that can be run against a NetBackup deployment (master/media/clients) to check for Symantec best practices and make recommendations where necessary (items like number buffers/size buffers/media and master server resource utilization/clients or servers with old software versions). The tool could even be integrated into a product like NOM to run on a regular schedule and so that it could alert when items become out of compliance/best practice.

The premise of this idea would be to provide a function similar to VMware DRS but for NetBackup policy scheduling. This feature would provide an option to adjust the policy schedule load balancing to either fully automated or partially automated based on a sliding "star type" scale like DRS. NetBackup would automatically balance fulls vs incrementals (or differentails) between the different days of the week (very helpful for those users performing fulls+incremental or differential spreading the fulls between different days of the week). Today this is a completely manual juggling process to balance load. The feature would also allow certain clients to be excluded from the automated balancing of schedules (ie a client where the full absolutely has to run on a specific day of the week due to system impact) similar to how DRS allows exclusions. This idea has nothing to do with load balancing clients between media servers which already exists to some extent.

Folks,
Installed NB60 on new Dell server running RedHatLinux 5.4 and when launching the jnbSA, only the Backup & Restore GUI is displayed. Recall having this issue on an earlier install several months back and can't seem to put a finger on the issue. Any helpful hints would be great. Thanks
