1. beginner to backup please bear norton ghost 14.0 guides you in this effort at one point it asks where do you want to store or keep the backup material for d it says read only for c it says you cannot backup to the drive that you are backing up quite logical
then is my undesstanding correct that norton provides the facility of backing up, but the actual storage has to be on some sort of an external device hard drive, card, flash drive, etc?
2. What is ghosts advantage here i mean a separate external hard disc will also transfer data itelf and store the backup material so will flash drives etc.
So what is ghost 14.0 really doing, over and above what other devices do?
when responding please use simple words
thank you very much

I am trying to think creative on a Monday morning and am quiet happy to get this phrase in my mind.."JUST ONE WORD".
Yeah...it's my call-out for the most you can say about a Symante'c Backup & Archiving product with just ONE happy word. For example: "Enterprise Vault is Execeptional Vault". Just shout back on this thread, as we can continue to witness the wonderful "one word" stories about our favourite products :-).
Backup and Archiving, Backup Exec, Backup Exec System Recovery, Evaluating, Backup Reporter, Enterprise Vault, NetBackup, NetBackup PureDisk, NetBackup RealTime Protection, Online Backup, Online Storage for Backup Exec, Replication Exec

Hi
The updates of Online Backup Agent cause a lot of problems if not installed immediately. Database server hung twice due to this and this agent is giving a lot of problem.
I cannot click on the Backup link in My Computers in the webconsole of the service.
Anyone else facing similar problems?

For the bad guys, it can be a costly exercise to produce new families of malware in order to maintain their criminal activity at sufficient levels. Registering new domains is much more economical for them, and by spreading the malware across as many different websites and domains as possible, the longevity of each new malware is increased. When employing server-side polymorphism, the same family of malware code may be packaged differently into new strains, automatically and dynamically, each time it is accessed. This requires a different anti-virus signature each time in order to detect it accurately. These approaches combined with the use of “bullet-proof” hosting services and “fast-flux” hosting means that criminals can ensure that malicious websites are not taken down quickly in response to complaints.
In many cases the organized criminals often have highly automated techniques in place that require little or no monitoring, and their systems are...

In early August, a number of very well-known social networking websites were reported to be victims of distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks. The attacks appear to be linked with a “Joe Job” style spam run against an anti-Russian blogger. A “Joe Job” is a spam technique that spoofs the From: email address using a real email address (i.e. an unsuspecting victim) to make it appear as though that person was responsible for the email.
The spam run, as far as MessageLabs Intelligence can determine, was estimated at less than one percent of all spam at that time and distributed from a currently unclassified botnet. The run was significantly smaller compared with some of the more recent spam runs, such as the URL-shortening attacks from Donbot.
Although it is presumed that this spam run contributed to the DDoS attacks on these social networking websites, it is unlikely that this run alone could have caused all the reported disruption, suggesting that...

Over the past two months, MessageLabs Intelligence has been tracking the rise of URL-shortening services appearing in spam emails. With so many of these legitimate services available on the internet, many are being routinely abused by spammers, so much so that many have been forced to close, leaving users with indignant messages explaining why, for example in Figure 1 and Figure 2, below.
Figure 1 - URL shortening website abused by spammers
Figure 2 - URL shortening website temporarily closed due to spam abuse
Spam runs containing many new shortened-URLs continued through July and August, with a peak of activity on 26 July at 9.25% of all spam, equivalent to more than 10 billion spam messages per day worldwide. This can be seen in Figure 3.
In this particular spam run, the focus was pharmaceutical and again, the Donbot botnet, one of the largest botnets currently in operation, was perceived to be responsible.
Example subjects included the following:
Phentermine 37.5...

Real Host, an ISP based in Riga, Latvia was alleged to be linked to command-and-control servers for infected botnet computers, as well as being linked to malicious websites, phishing websites and “rogue” anti-virus products. Real Host was disconnected by its upstream providers on 1 August 2009. The impact was immediately felt, as can be seen in Figure 1, where spam volumes dropped briefly by as much as 38% in the subsequent 48-hour period.
Much of this spam was linked to the Cutwail botnet, currently one of the largest botnets and responsible for approximately 15-20% of all spam. Its activity levels fell by as much as 90% when Real Host was taken offline, but quickly recovered in a matter of days.
Figure 1 shows the relative proportion of spam originating from the five major botnets globally during the period of this attack: Cutwail, Xarvester, Rustock, Mega-D, and Donbot. The scale used is a relative index based on the relative volumes and spam rate...

The most common trigger for policy-based filtering applied by the MessageLabs Web Security Service for its business clients was the “Advertisements & Popups” category, down by 2.07% since July, to 58.03% in August.
Analysis of web security activity shows that 45.4% of all web-based malware intercepted was new in August, an increase of 44.7% since July, and 19.5% of web-based spyware was new, a 0.01% decrease since the previous month.
An average of 3,510 websites per day were identified as harboring malware and other potentially unwanted programs such as spyware and adware; a decrease of 2.9% since July.
The chart below shows the increase in the number of new spyware and adware websites blocked each day on average during August compared with the equivalent number of web-based malware websites blocked each day.

Prelude
Initially, I wrote this about Backup Exec, because that's where I ran into this problem. I'm also a SAV & SEP veteran but don't recall seeing this heinous language in their KB articles. So maybe it's a Veritas thing. But, whatever...
...then it occurred to me that while BE may (or may not) be the only Symantec enterprise product to which the symptom applies, the cure is universal. Because it bridges a huge gap between the goals of Symantec Sales, Support, Connect, Knowledge Base, and Product Managers. So I've taken the unusual-and-hopefully-not-presumptuous step of tagging it to all available products. It is global.
That kinda makes it Ideas spam, I know. Never done it before; probably never will again. Hope you can forgive me!
Don Quixote Battles Symantec
Two KB articles I've browsed recently contain variations on this boilerplate (emphasis mine):

Hi
I can't browse my files from SPN's Online Backup. It simly shows directory named "Local Volumes" which is not expandable.
1)Event log was clean(no errors or warnings)
2)I received this error: "Unable to retrieve file system information the agent or the system queried may not be running"
3)According to this post(https://www-secure.symantec.com/connect/forums/una...) there should be 3 windows services running:
Symantec Protection Network Backup Agent
Symantec Protection Network Communications Manager
Symantec Protection Network Platform Agent Administrator
4)Near the computer I want to backup I see this message "Online backup currently has no backup job policy"
I am missing "Symantec Protection Network Communications Manager" service from my list. Is it ok? If this is not ok, then reinstallation did not fix it for me.
Regards!

Wondering any good recommendations about how to manage my backups. Just started working at home. I'd like to use an online system that takes time snap shots like time machine on mac. Also would prefer to use an online system. I have looked at jungle disk. You can schedule backups but it doesn't seem like it logs the changes on a file.

Today, Symantec will participate in the 2009 Phoenix Awards at the National Small Business Week event in Washington D.C. Since 1998, the Small Business Association has given the Phoenix Award to business owners, public officials and volunteers who displayed selflessness, ingenuity and tenacity in the aftermath of a disaster, while contributing to the rebuilding of their communities.
Losing critical information in the wake of a disaster can be crippling for a small business and it is critical for small businesses to establish a disaster recovery plan. By putting basic best practices to action companies can protect against data loss and system downtime, establish business continuity and ensure rapid recovery from a disaster.
We’ve put together a list of simple tips that can help small business easily develop a disaster recovery strategy:
1. Know what needs to be secure and protected – This data includes customer information, human resources information, proprietary trade...

Recently I stepped into my new career as VERITAS Netbackup administrator; I am remembering the days spend at Doors (My Previous Origination). That was a smaller setup with 20 Servers and 150 more desktops. Developers save their project related data’s in Server and only few servers require backup to taken place.
We don’t have demand to purchase new backup software to manage backup of the servers. So we used to do backup of that servers using Ntbackup. As the data that need to backup is less in size we went for Disk-based Ntbackup.
A separate server admin allocated to maintain these server backups. His regular duty is monitoring, scheduling, and reporting the management with backup status. Even though a single guy allocated to this activity we used to get lot of problems while backing up and restoring data’s.
Data size got increased and that makes us to go for tapes based backups. To implement this we got 1 Tape Drive with 10 more tapes to use for backups. We used to...
