Hello, I am currently running the trial of the Online Storage using Backup Exec 12.5 Small Business Edition. We currently have about 35 - 40GB of data that gets backed up in our full backups that occur once a week now, and about 5GB of data that gets backed up as a differential the rest of the week mon - thurs.  (office is closed on weekends). There are, of course, two jobs that do this, a full and differential.  AS a trial, I setup an account with the Online Storage and setup a Duplicate Set Copy of the Differential Job. There are two problems that we are running into with this.  First, both jobs currently backup to a DAT-40/80 Tape system running with hardware/software failback compression. Once that job runs, if it does run successfully, we have had a LOT of backup failures with the tapes, upgraded tapes, cleaned, etc... which prompted us to upgrade from BackupExec 11d to 12.5 and start Online Storage. Since the upgrade, however, the tapes are also suceeding, but I...

I am trying to think creative on a Monday morning and am quiet happy to get this phrase in my mind.."JUST ONE WORD". Yeah...it's my call-out for the most you can say about a Symante'c Backup & Archiving product with just ONE happy word. For example: "Enterprise Vault is Execeptional Vault". Just shout back on this thread, as we can continue to witness the wonderful "one word" stories about our favourite products :-).

For the bad guys, it can be a costly exercise to produce new families of malware in order to maintain their criminal activity at sufficient levels. Registering new domains is much more economical for them, and by spreading the malware across as many different websites and domains as possible, the longevity of each new malware is increased. When employing server-side polymorphism, the same family of malware code may be packaged differently into new strains, automatically and dynamically, each time it is accessed. This requires a different anti-virus signature each time in order to detect it accurately. These approaches combined with the use of “bullet-proof” hosting services and “fast-flux” hosting means that criminals can ensure that malicious websites are not taken down quickly in response to complaints. In many cases the organized criminals often have highly automated techniques in place that require little or no monitoring, and their systems are...

In early August, a number of very well-known social networking websites were reported to be victims of distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks. The attacks appear to be linked with a “Joe Job” style spam run against an anti-Russian blogger. A “Joe Job” is a spam technique that spoofs the From: email address using a real email address (i.e. an unsuspecting victim) to make it appear as though that person was responsible for the email. The spam run, as far as MessageLabs Intelligence can determine, was estimated at less than one percent of all spam at that time and distributed from a currently unclassified botnet. The run was significantly smaller compared with some of the more recent spam runs, such as the URL-shortening attacks from Donbot.   Although it is presumed that this spam run contributed to the DDoS attacks on these social networking websites, it is unlikely that this run alone could have caused all the reported disruption, suggesting that...

Over the past two months, MessageLabs Intelligence has been tracking the rise of URL-shortening services appearing in spam emails. With so many of these legitimate services available on the internet, many are being routinely abused by spammers, so much so that many have been forced to close, leaving users with indignant messages explaining why, for example in Figure 1 and Figure 2, below. Figure 1 - URL shortening website abused by spammers Figure 2 - URL shortening website temporarily closed due to spam abuse Spam runs containing many new shortened-URLs continued through July and August, with a peak of activity on 26 July at 9.25% of all spam, equivalent  to more than 10 billion spam messages per day worldwide. This can be seen in Figure 3. In this particular spam run, the focus was pharmaceutical and again, the Donbot botnet, one of the largest botnets currently in operation, was perceived to be responsible.  Example subjects included the following: Phentermine 37.5...

Real Host, an ISP based in Riga, Latvia was alleged to be linked to command-and-control servers for infected botnet computers, as well as being linked to malicious websites, phishing websites and “rogue” anti-virus products.  Real Host was disconnected by its upstream providers on 1 August 2009. The impact was immediately felt, as can be seen in Figure 1, where spam volumes dropped briefly by as much as 38% in the subsequent 48-hour period.  Much of this spam was linked to the Cutwail botnet, currently one of the largest botnets and responsible for approximately 15-20% of all spam. Its activity levels fell by as much as 90% when Real Host was taken offline, but quickly recovered in a matter of days. Figure 1 shows the relative proportion of spam originating from the five major botnets globally during the period of this attack: Cutwail, Xarvester, Rustock, Mega-D, and Donbot. The scale used is a relative index based on the relative volumes and spam rate...

The most common trigger for policy-based filtering applied by the MessageLabs Web Security Service for its business clients was the “Advertisements & Popups” category, down by 2.07% since July, to 58.03% in August. Analysis of web security activity shows that 45.4% of all web-based malware intercepted was new in August, an increase of 44.7% since July, and 19.5% of web-based spyware was new, a 0.01% decrease since the previous month. An average of 3,510 websites per day were identified as harboring malware and other potentially unwanted programs such as spyware and adware; a decrease of 2.9% since July. The chart below shows the increase in the number of new spyware and adware websites blocked each day on average during August compared with the equivalent number of web-based malware websites blocked each day. Prelude Initially, I wrote this about Backup Exec, because that's where I ran into this problem. I'm also a SAV & SEP veteran but don't recall seeing this heinous language in their KB articles. So maybe it's a Veritas thing. But, whatever... ...then it occurred to me that while BE may (or may not) be the only Symantec enterprise product to which the symptom applies, the cure is universal. Because it bridges a huge gap between the goals of Symantec Sales, Support, Connect, Knowledge Base, and Product Managers. So I've taken the unusual-and-hopefully-not-presumptuous step of tagging it to all available products. It is global. That kinda makes it Ideas spam, I know. Never done it before; probably never will again. Hope you can forgive me! Don Quixote Battles Symantec Two KB articles I've browsed recently contain variations on this boilerplate (emphasis mine): "There are currently no plans to address this issue by way of a patch or hotfix in the...

Hey all! Did you all know that we now have a new rewards system in place? Considering the changes made to it, I would want to revisit the tips that I shared with you in my last blog. My point of focus is yet again the "Voting"  and "Mark as Solution" features. Now, when your post is marked as a solution you gain 25 points, while your votes to the posts will no longer gain you 0.5 points. Instead, with every thumbs-up you make to a post, the respective author will be adding some points to his kitty. If you think that voting is a benefit to the content authors and not you, its definitely not. You do a favor now to your peers and they will return your favor back when you have some content posted. It's a give and take policy. Therefore, make it a point to make "Voting" and "Marking as a Solution" part of your routine. Check this out for more details. Digressing from the above topic, I would want to share some more information that can...

As a product manager for Backup Exec I have the pleasure of talking to many of our customers and partners in the field. It’s fascinating to hear about the latest backup strategy, with the newest hardware and the way customers use our product to secure good backups. On the other hand, what concerns me is the lack of strategy when it comes to disaster recovery.   When I did IT work, which wasn’t too long ago, I remember having to rebuild a server from scratch when it crashed. True, I had my data secure, but the time it took to rebuild that server cost the customer or company money. It was very painful; I remember having to locate the drivers disc, install the OS again, get everything updated, reinstall the apps, configure everything, etc… and then restore the data.   After that, I had to make sure everything was synced and then reconfigure the backup job.   Of course this is just the Reader’s Digest version. You, who...

Executive Summary Symantec Backup Exec™ for Windows® Servers is a comprehensive backup and recovery solution that protects a wide range of data resources, from file systems to popular databases. Symantec Online Storage enhances Backup Exec by providing secure off-site backup storage hosted in redundant data centers that are managed by Symantec for long-term storage and disaster recovery purposes. Symantec Online Storage for Backup Exec is an offering of Symantec Protection Network (www.spn.com), which provides market-leading Symantec technologies to customers as online services. Symantec Online Storage for Backup Exec is completely integrated with Backup Exec for Windows Servers (v12 and higher); in theory, you could send any on-premise backup to Symantec Protection Network data centers. However, when backing up over the Internet to managed data centers, the performance is not the same as when backing up to local disk. The amount of bandwidth available, frequency of backups...

Hosted applications delivered over the Internet, commonly called "software-as-a-service," are rapidly gaining popularity with customers in small and large businesses, as well as with consumers. By 2010, this form of delivery is estimated to comprise 23 percent of the $120 billion U.S. software market, according to a recent report by RBC Capital Markets. What accounts for this growth? Software-as-a-service (SaaS) offers several advantages compared with buying traditional software licenses. Here are some of the most compelling: Lower TCO: SaaS is usually paid for on a monthly subscription basis. That can make payments more manageable for customers, spreading them out over time rather than paying a lump sum. More importantly, this model helps lower total cost of ownership by eliminating some of the non-licensing costs associated with using an application. When running an application in house, you need hardware to run it on, and IT staff to provide ongoing maintenance. With...
