I am trying to think creative on a Monday morning and am quiet happy to get this phrase in my mind.."JUST ONE WORD".
Yeah...it's my call-out for the most you can say about a Symante'c Backup & Archiving product with just ONE happy word. For example: "Enterprise Vault is Execeptional Vault". Just shout back on this thread, as we can continue to witness the wonderful "one word" stories about our favourite products :-).

My Veritas Storage Replicator 3.0 has been running well for years. It stopped running on its schedule last month. It is scheduled to run every hour. However, it only runs at the beginning of the schedule and then doesn't run again until the next day at the beginning of the schedule. The "Next Scheduled Operation" field in the management console is blank.
I noticed that it stopped running as scheduled on the same day that windows updates were installed.
It is running on a server 2003 OS and backing up data on another 2003 server.
It will run manually.
In the job log, I see that after running the job, there are numerous "attempting to stop" entries. It also then says that the pair is "deactivated"
Any and all help is appreciated. Thanks

Prelude
Initially, I wrote this about Backup Exec, because that's where I ran into this problem. I'm also a SAV & SEP veteran but don't recall seeing this heinous language in their KB articles. So maybe it's a Veritas thing. But, whatever...
...then it occurred to me that while BE may (or may not) be the only Symantec enterprise product to which the symptom applies, the cure is universal. Because it bridges a huge gap between the goals of Symantec Sales, Support, Connect, Knowledge Base, and Product Managers. So I've taken the unusual-and-hopefully-not-presumptuous step of tagging it to all available products. It is global.
That kinda makes it Ideas spam, I know. Never done it before; probably never will again. Hope you can forgive me!
Don Quixote Battles Symantec
Two KB articles I've browsed recently contain variations on this boilerplate (emphasis mine):
"There are currently no plans to address this issue by way of a patch or hotfix in the...

Does Replication Exec require that a backup server's hardware be identical to the main server? Can a server with lesser specs than the main server be used as a backup server?

As a product manager for Backup Exec I have the pleasure of talking to many of our customers and partners in the field. It’s fascinating to hear about the latest backup strategy, with the newest hardware and the way customers use our product to secure good backups. On the other hand, what concerns me is the lack of strategy when it comes to disaster recovery.
When I did IT work, which wasn’t too long ago, I remember having to rebuild a server from scratch when it crashed. True, I had my data secure, but the time it took to rebuild that server cost the customer or company money. It was very painful; I remember having to locate the drivers disc, install the OS again, get everything updated, reinstall the apps, configure everything, etc… and then restore the data. After that, I had to make sure everything was synced and then reconfigure the backup job.
Of course this is just the Reader’s Digest version. You, who...

Hello folks,
Thank you all for taking time to provide us with some constructive feedback about ‘our’ community. We will be working on your suggested improvements in our next release... So please stay tuned.
Alright, now it’s time to divert our topic from ‘Community Health’ to ‘Community Wealth’. The new site has lots of robust content made available to you. Leaving aside the forums which continue to be a hotspot for many, I would want to discuss about the Articles, Videos and Downloads. How resourceful are they? How different you want them to be? What more would you like to see? These are some of the many questions that I am seeking answers for. Any thoughts are welcome.
And, just to reiterate, the community provides you with a wonderful opportunity to contribute content. You could blog, write articles or post any videos or scripts that could be quite informative to your peers. Just a few guidelines to be keep in mind...

Hello Everyone,We need to install Veritas Replication Exec 3.1 on our Windows 2003 64 bit, according with the Symantec documentation (http://seer.entsupport.symantec.com/docs/282853.htm) it’s possible using the 32 bit emulator (WOW64), but the VRE installer does not allowed, it send error message (“You cannot install VERITAS Replication Exec to 64 bit operation systems”), we try running direct from the SYSWOW64 Installare (C:\WINDOWS\SysWOW64\InstallShield) but even there the VRE Installer detect the 64 bits O.S. and stop installation.Any help will be appreciated, regards,Marco

I am considering Replication Exec for my environment but I have 2 questions
1. Does Replication Exec Support Exchange 2007?
2. Does Replication Exec provide for Automatic failover if the primary server fails?
A white paper or article(s) would be great if exchange 2007 is supported.

hi folks,
i got a strange problem in my replication 3.1 enviroment.
Situation:
1x W2k3 Management RMS Server
Firewall
3x W2k3 Replication targets (one virtual (target_1) and one physical (target_2) )
The management und the replication targets are on different subnets. Routing works well, ports are open in both directions.
The replication works fine for two of my replication target servers (target_1 and target_2).
What´s new?
I cloned the virtual server (target_1) to another replication target server named target_3.
I changed the sid of target_3, changed the servername and ip-address, assured name resolution.
I deleted the corresponding CLSID key in the registry (id key for RE3.1 to identify the host)
Next i reinstalled the replication exec software on target_3. Works fine.
After that the new server appeared in the RMS management console.
But the state is still "offline". No way to change this state (options greyed out).
What I did for troubleshooting:

We recently reinstalled our Replication Exec 3.1 on a windows 2003 server. For some reason, I cannot get it set the way we used to.
Seems that when it replicates it starts the file from zero and copies the whole file again instead of appending. Also, it used to replicate in the evening and the files would be done by morning.
If there is someone out there that can help, my e-mail address is {removed email address to reduce spam}. Otherwise, I can call support.

I understand that VRE can replicate sql databases real time by replicating the *.mdf and *.ldf files to another server. I set up a job to replicate several database and the replication is working fine -- until I run a sql job that does mass updates to several tables in a database. When these type of jobs run, the SQL server service locks up and hangs and a power off/power on to the server is needed. I tested this out on another set of servers. I ran the sql job with and without the replication job running. With it running, it kills the server. Without vre running, no problem. Has anyone encountered anything similar to this or can someone offer some advice on how to make this work? I would like to think I could replicate about 20 databases that consist of about 10 gigs total with a medium volume of transaction activity on each database every day.
Any feedback would be definitely appreciated. Thanks. -jb

Hi there
I'm trying to create a new server in Replication Exec so I can set up a new replication job. I can select the server from the list of available machines on our network but when I try to remotely install the Replication Service Agent I keep running into the error "unable to communicate with ********: access is denied" followed by "server creation did not complete successfully". I'm logged onto both servers with the domain administrator account and have set full control permissions and shared the target server's local drive where the agent was going to be installed. I've added the domain administrator account to the 'Administrator' group on the target server. Even if I create a new share and set the permissions up from scratch the same thing happens.......
Can anyone point me in the right direction?
Thanks in advance.

On the VRE client, all services load nicely, but the RSA gets this message:
"Windows could not start the Replication Service Agent on Local Computer. For more information review the System Event Log. If this is a non-Microsoft service, contact the service vendor, and refer to service-specific error code 8201."
When I look in the Application Event Viewer, I see the message:
"Replication Exec service initialization failed. : Initialization failed. : Cannot communicate with the filter drivers - (NT error The system cannot find the file specified.)."
Any ideas??
