ENVY: Wishing the environment was more flexible and dynamic than it is
Now that Windows 7 is upon us, a familiar dread is falling over IT managers around the world. Staff levels are often barely sufficient to support daily maintenance tasks, leaving an OS migration to mean many extra hours and restless nights. First comes application retesting in every conceivable combination (in multiple images), application license reconciling, and system and personality backups. Then come the expected weeks and months of helpdesk calls and lost productivity, as users discover the many additional ways that their systems and applications may become unstable or unusable. All of this anticipation leads to envy of a hypothetical flexible environment where applications migrate without a hitch, systems dynamically configure themselves to the logged in user, and there are no sleepless nights.

Prelude
Initially, I wrote this about Backup Exec, because that's where I ran into this problem. I'm also a SAV & SEP veteran but don't recall seeing this heinous language in their KB articles. So maybe it's a Veritas thing. But, whatever...
...then it occurred to me that while BE may (or may not) be the only Symantec enterprise product to which the symptom applies, the cure is universal. Because it bridges a huge gap between the goals of Symantec Sales, Support, Connect, Knowledge Base, and Product Managers. So I've taken the unusual-and-hopefully-not-presumptuous step of tagging it to all available products. It is global.
That kinda makes it Ideas spam, I know. Never done it before; probably never will again. Hope you can forgive me!

Symantec’s Healthcare Industry Solutions group recently hosted a roundtable on the storage drain EMRs and other medical images place on the IT infrastructure. It was a great discussion that included Gary Sevounts and Phil Goodwin of Symantec, Rob Horst and Matt Giblin of Mercy Health and myself as moderator.
We discussed the following topics: storage management, storage virtualization and the challenges hospitals and other medical facilities can overcome by implementing the right solutions that fit the needs of your healthcare organization.

The reason why you are not finding the Rtvscan.exe in the database, is because the software scan runs in Package Mode by default, so it will report on the first file that meets certain criteria and as Symantec AntiVirus has many files with the same criteria, there is a slim chance that you will have the file that you wish reported when using Package Mode (defwatch.exe, savroam.exe, and sndinst.exe were reported).
To combat Package Mode without using file mode on the auditpls.ini file itself, you can add the 'Symantec AntiVirus' Product Name to the 'AeX SW Virus Protection' Special Group, and then configure the Special Group to run in File Mode (Special Group Properties > Advanced > check the Package Mode check box > select the No radio button). This will cause the software scan to report on all EXE files that meet the criteria within this Special Group.
As you also want to report on certain DLL files, you can simply add them to the 'File Masks' section of the auditpls.ini...

Community involvement isn’t a new thing to most of you, having migrated from the Juice. As your admin I prefer to stay behind the curtain and let you run the show while I sort out issues behind the scenes. But it seems that my role with Connect is a bit different now. Every now and again I need to draw your attention to something that you may not be award of or you may find interesting.
