We are in the process of upgrading our virtual/streaming infrastructure. One of the main reasons to upgrade was the possibility to patch streamed virtual applications. Because there was no use for the "package folder" this folder (working dir of streaming composer) was not saved, and only the end-product (zip file) was saved. Is there any way to patch our old streamed applications without this working directory?

ENVY: Wishing the environment was more flexible and dynamic than it is
Now that Windows 7 is upon us, a familiar dread is falling over IT managers around the world. Staff levels are often barely sufficient to support daily maintenance tasks, leaving an OS migration to mean many extra hours and restless nights. First comes application retesting in every conceivable combination (in multiple images), application license reconciling, and system and personality backups. Then come the expected weeks and months of helpdesk calls and lost productivity, as users discover the many additional ways that their systems and applications may become unstable or unusable. All of this anticipation leads to envy of a hypothetical flexible environment where applications migrate without a hitch, systems dynamically configure themselves to the logged in user, and there are no sleepless nights.
Today, dreams of a flexible, dynamic computing environment are becoming a...

Hi All ,
I am new to this product. I have some queries which I believe people here can answer.
Post Installation of workspace streaming on to the client machine, if we stream some applications from the server and use those OFFLINE how are we actually going to do that ?
Where will these applications, and things created from those applications be stored during the ONLINE/ OFFLINE mode ?
Does the client retain the configuration settings it acquires from the server after a reboot ?
Thanks in advance
Vishu

I think it would be very beneficial to have other items that can define what machine an app is provisioned to, rather than simply the user id. In an environment when people do switch machines from say a headquarters site to a DR site and you only want the streaming/virtualized app available at DR. You could set up 2 streaming environments, but then you also have to manage 2 environments. If you set up a nice load balanced system that covers many of your sites, you can manage everything think in a single place.
Since we already use LDAP and get user information, would it be possible to get computer information as well. So, if I only want to allow application X to be available for user Y on computer Z, that is the only computer the icons show up on. Currently, if I provision a user for a licensed app and they begin using it on their normal production machine, then they travel 15 miles down the road to a DR site, the app icons show on this machine...

It would be nice to see a profile management tool integrated with Symantec Workspace Streaming.
If you use Symantec Workspace Streaming with virtual applications, it will store the user settings locally on the client computer in a GUID under the FSLRDR directory for files and registry settings.
if these user settings would be stored on a central server, it would be possible to roam over different clients which has the users applications and settings.
As an alternative it would also be nice to have registry exclusions in SWV, this will allow other tools to manage these user settings.

Prelude
Initially, I wrote this about Backup Exec, because that's where I ran into this problem. I'm also a SAV & SEP veteran but don't recall seeing this heinous language in their KB articles. So maybe it's a Veritas thing. But, whatever...
...then it occurred to me that while BE may (or may not) be the only Symantec enterprise product to which the symptom applies, the cure is universal. Because it bridges a huge gap between the goals of Symantec Sales, Support, Connect, Knowledge Base, and Product Managers. So I've taken the unusual-and-hopefully-not-presumptuous step of tagging it to all available products. It is global.
That kinda makes it Ideas spam, I know. Never done it before; probably never will again. Hope you can forgive me!

Two KB articles I've browsed recently contain variations on this boilerplate (emphasis mine):

Symantec Super Session at VMworld 2009: Wednesday, September 2 at 10:00 AM
Of course I may be a little biased because I will be presenting, but there are a lot of reasons why you should make Symantec’s Super Session a priority during your VMworld 2009 experience
Steve Morton, Vice President of Product Marketing, and myself will present on strategies and best practice around pain points customers have faced during virtualization deployments
Steve has threatened to change the format on me, live on stage, and I am hoping this isn’t true. However, he is known to be a joker so I guess I will just have to wait and see what happens
Our goal is to share examples of how others have solved complex virtualization problems. You will see how a municipality in Florida was able to reduce a half-day virtual machine recovery to 15 minutes. This cut their backup time by 96% using Symantec solutions. Data protection and storage management continue to be the biggest pain...

Currently, I setup single-node install of Symantec Workspace Streaming server.
My Servers and users are on the same subnet and running on 1Gbps LAN speed.
However, the streaming speed from server to the user is significantly very slow after i launch it from the portal.
Example :
Adobe Photoshop CS4
size 700MB package
take about 1 minute 55 seconds to launch.
Is there any specific setting on server or client config file to boost the streaming speed ?
Please kindly advise.

A few steps back...
When I write these articles I am pretty sure I end up learning much more than I would have otherwise. After I wrote the first two articles I was doing some testing on both my layer of Adobe CS4 (on a machine and streamed) and I bumped into a few problems. The first is that the software would randomly ask if I wanted to register. The second was updates (they would decide to run at random times). I decided that I needed to figure out how to disable these features before I rolled this software out to the users in my environment. Luckily it was an easy solution. The only bad thing is that it caused me to rebuild the second layer (the one with everything but Acrobat). Here is how you disable the Registration, EULA, and Updates prompt:
The first thing that you should do is copy all of your files to your desktop (or some other location you can easily access). Once they are done copying you are ready to go. Now, we need to identify what Adobe calls " the driver...

You may already be familiar with the results of trying to build a streaming package that does not contain an executable. Workspace Streaming composer identifies executables and creates shortcuts as part of the package. These shortcuts are then streamed to the desktop and the user can double click to launch the application. When you remove that variable, the Streaming Composer has nothing to work with and you will not be able to complete the package.
There are actually two approaches to creating such packages. One approach is by using the "dummy.exe" to play the role of the missing executable. Seriously... that's the name of the file. If you don't believe me, search the install folder. I'm not trying to imply anything here, I'm all about customer satisfaction. So where was I, oh, right... the other way, is to create a real executable shortcut to "Winlogon.exe", a Windows system file. Depending on what application is being packaged, one or the other may be preferred...

All,
I am attempting to send an application startup block to my server. I have done all of the prep work on the application (e.g. open the programs that I want to be part of the starting block), I have deleted the old starting block from the streaming console, and I have run the following command:
AppMgrCmd.exe -sb <paclageGUID>
Every time I run this script I get the following error:
"Sending an application startup block to the server requires an active session for that application."
I am not sure what qualifiies as an "actvie session". I have opened one program and ensured that the session was active and I recevied the same error. I have opened all of the applications and I get the same error.
The only thing that I can think of is that this program is in a streaming layer. I am not sure why that would make a different. Any thoughts?

On the old Juice site there was a wiki where customers could post what apps they have been able to virtualize. It was a great feature for me. I was able to check and see if app I was working on worked for someone else. It was probably a nightmare for the people who work at Symantec (because all of the data was unverified).
I would be nice to have an area of the web site where the Symantec-verified apps are listed. It would be nice to have a list to look at before I create a layer (or stream something). What do you think?

In the last article I talked about the reason we switched over to a concurrent license of Adobe CS4 Design Suite Premium. I also said that I wanted to virtualize the software so Symantec Workspace Streaming could manage the licenses. After spending a long, long time trying to get everything virtualized I bumped into a few tricks I wanted to share. The first tip was breaking Adobe CS4 into two layers. The last article talked about creating an Adobe Acrobat Layer. In this article we are going to create a layer of the following software:
InDesign CS4
Photoshop CS4 Extended
Illustrator CS4
Flash CS4 Professional
Dreamweaver CS4
Fireworks CS4
Adobe Bridge CS4
Adobe Device Central CS4
There are a few tricks to this layer as well.
There are a few things that you need to keep in mind before we get going. Your machine needs to have 1 gig of RAM and a screen resolution of 1024 x 768. Also, I would recommend you build this layer (and all layers really) on a clean virtual machine. You just run...

Last year we decided to do something new to save some money. We offer a few classes that use Adobe CS4 Design Suite Premium. In the past we had purchased individual licenses of the Adobe CS suites. Which was nice, but it has it's own set of problems. For one, each license is tied to a physical machine. Most of the time this isn't a problem. But, there are situations where it would be nice to be more flexible. Another problem is usage. We would install the software on certain computers on campus. That meant that you could only use the software on those computers. If you wanted to use Photoshop you had to wait until the computer was free (even if the person you are waiting for us just watching YouTube or playing on Facebook).
We decided to purchase concurrent licenses. This means that we can install Adobe CS4 on as many computers as we wish, but only a certain number of users are able to actually use the software. We did some usage checks and looked at the past several years of all the...

I have noticed that when you remove a software package in the streaming console that you have to manually remove the package on the end user's machine. Is there some way that we could tag the software to be removed automatically from the machine? This would be a great feature.

We have done a multi site workspace streaming deployment for a client but load balancing is not deployed at all sites as the number of users is small at the branch offices.
is there any way to set a client to fail over to a backup or secondary remote streaming server in the event that the client cannot contact the primary local server, so that it is transparent to the user

So far I discussed some high level info about the Symantec Workspace products. Yet I have barely touched the tip of the iceberg in terms of how vast the "virtualization" industry is. Just with application streaming and virtualization alone, you can cover most if not all desktops out there.
Virtualization provides a tool for creating efficient deployable application layers that can also be isolated to keep a completely pristine environment. When you couple this together with application streaming you are with this single step now creating a complete solution for delivering traditional Windows based applications on-demand into anything that looks and acts like a Windows desktop.
This is not limited to the traditional desktop either. While that is probably the larger percentage of endpoints today, eventually we will see this shift to the hypervisor and VDI solutions. The options are vast, Type 2 hypervisors such as Parallels Workstation or VMware Fusion, running Windows on Mac...
