Hello everyone.  We've built an Office 2003 SWV layer in Win7, and for the most part, everything works wonderfully.  However, if you open the thesaurus (the full blown side panel one, not the right click) it will take awhile ~5 minutes for the panel to appear.  Any ideas what could cause this?  Has anyone seen anything similarly?

What is previously called Software Virtualization Solution is now called Symantec Workspace Virtualization.  So I guess the agent that was the SVS Agent is now SWV agent. Maybe if you went to Manage Fusion or Vision you know this, but some of us didn't, so a memo would be nice.  The tricky thing is that SVS 2.1 is still shipped with CMS 7.  Trickier even still is SVS 2.1 is magically replace by SWV 6.1.  I don't know all the details, but I know you can download it from the trialware site under Endpoint Virtualization Suite: http://www.symantec.com/business/products/downloads/index.jsp There is a download there specifically for an integrated installation that should integrate with your CMS server.

Hi, Is it possible to virtualize the MS Office Compatibility Pack 2007, because I'm having problems with this. I've installed MS Office 2003 in a virtual layer with the installation path other than default, because of the Short File Name issue in SWV. But when you install MS Office Compatibility Pack 2007 in the same (or another) layer, it will install in "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office12"! Is there a way to install this Compatibility Pack in another folder, which has no issue with the short file names? The second problem I have with the Compatibility Pack is that it will install Fonts, like Office does. I've found these Fonts in the Font table of the extracted MSI Should these fonts be removed from the MSI and installed in the base? regards, Matthias

Windows 7 Pro, Dell Optiplex755.  When creating a new layer, makes no difference what software application, I get an Error 2503 then 2502.  The application installs normally when installing on the C: drive, no errors.  The application is installing from a cd with an .exe.  Antivirus is turned off.  I also tried to install it on a "clean" VM machine with the same error results.  Any ideas?? I've already subscribed this article, but was wondering if this has been fixed: article 46158: KNOWN ISSUE: Firewall blocking virtualized programs even though program listed in firewall''s exception list. https://kb.altiris.com/display/1n/kb/article.asp?a... Currently, I'm running Comodo Firewall and its associated "Defense" HIPS-like system and find that no matter what kind of exclusions I put in the SWV ProgramIgnoreList registry setting, it (Comodo) can't seem to exclude SWV-layer programs that trigger the protection prompts.  This problem is very similar to the article above as I have also observed previously that I can't get Windows Firewall to allow SWV-layer programs that trigger it. The problem seems to be how SWV-layer programs present its path to the firewalls (In Comodo and Windows Firewall).  The firewalls seems to see the true exe paths when offering to save it for exclusion.  However, later on when the program runs, it triggers the...

The SWV 6.1 SP1 documentation states the following: The installation creates the following registry keys: Registry redirection area HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\fslrdr The registry redirection area is where the registry entries in a virtual software layer are stored. However, it seems registry information is stored under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE where each layer is named _SWV_LAYER_# where # is the (sub)layer's magic number. The fslrdr key (mentioned in the documentation) is still created. Is this for backward compatibility?

The SWV 6.1 SP1 documentation states that to modify a VSP, a user must generally be a member of the local administrators group. However, rights to activate / deactivate a VSP can be granted using registry keys: The documentation is incorrect about the activate key and unclear about the the deactivate key. Users with have read access to the HKLM\System\Services\FSLX\Parameters\FSL\Rights\Activate key can activate VSPs. Users with read access to the HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\FSLX\Parameters\FSL\Rights\Deactivate key can deactivate VSPs. Probably this should be HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\FSLX\Parameters\FSL\Rights\Activate  and HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\FSLX\Parameters\FSL\Rights\Deactivate. These keys don't seem to exist in the standard setup. Should they be created?

After two very successful day's at the previous Altiris headquarters in Lindon I had to travel to Jacksonville Florida. Sunday is my first day off after 8 very exhausting day's of traveling, working, catching up some sleep and traveling again. I'm making a tour through the United States. Actually I will hit on 10 States in 12 days. I started in Somerset, New Jersey on Sunday. Traveled to Manhattan Wall Street on Monday. On Tuesday after a very exiting day of work on Wall Street I took the Acela train to Boston. I left Boston Thursday very early to get to Salt Lake City with a short stop in Phoenix, Arizona. Saturday morning very early I left Salt Lake where it was snowing and freezing and made a short stop in Atlanta (22 minutes) to go to Jacksonville. Monday I will do a VirtualStorm implementation in Jacksonville and Monday evening I fly to Atlanta. Tuesday I do a VirtualStorm Installation in Atlanta and Wednesday morning I have a Flight to Charlotte and then through to Chicago. Yes...

I have recently upgraded to SWV 6 SP1. When I try to install Endpoint Protection version 11.4 at the end of the installation it rollsback and uninstalls. If I disable my layers it will install.  Is there something in my layers that is causing this? I use Wise package Studio 7 Sp3 to create my layers. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Today, Friday the 13th of November 2009 I'm a guest of Symantec in the Lindon office in Utah. There I will work with the SWV team to show them how we use SWV, and we talk about real time issues that we see with SWV. All to make it much better then it already is. It is so great to see all the people who work on SVS and now SWV to make it even better. Most of them I already know because they are frequent Connect visitors, but now I see the faces behind the names. I can not say anything, but believe me: SWV will get better and better. Cheers from Utah Erik

If using Intel vPro Technology has caused you to say - "Wouldn't it be cool if the technology did...."    There is much the underlying technology and firmware is capable of doing.   The Symantec Management Platform with Out-of-Band Management focuses on a majority of the manageability features.   Yet there are more features around security, virtualization... and further manageability... in the platform.   Plus, there are more ideas and requests coming from customers, partners, and so forth.   Did you know there is a public forum to post or review ideas?  Take a look at http://ideazone.software.intel.com/communities/intel-vpro-technology/ideas/recent

Does 2.1.3066 version of SVS agent support  Windows 2k8 Core platform? I'm able to install the SVS agent and import the VSA file successfully. But after activating the layer, I'm not able to see the folder structure for the particular application under Program Files. Regards, Sourabh

Hi everyone, we already have more than 100 virtual apps in our environment. We successfully use this technique since more than one and a half years. However, since the change of the clients (new hardware and sp2 to sp3 from WinXP) we do have some problems with our virtual apps. One of those is that a large amount of files keep escaping the layer. Even on layers with no exclude. The problem is that changing layers (i.e. a newer app version) do not take effekt because almost all of the older files are still in the base. So our Helpdesk needs to deactivate the new layer, clean the file system, reset and activate the new layer and then things are fine. But what's the reason behind this behaviour? We're still on SVS 2.1.3071 because we've had issues with SWV 6.x during internal test phase on German XP. Could it be a problem because SVS gets installed and then the machine is imaged? So everyone gets the 'same svs installation'? Thanks for any hints in advance. Roland

Is it possible to resurrect a Layered App in the Base? Commit a Layer, convert it to an MSI or in some other way transfer it to the World of the Real?

ENVY:  Wishing the environment was more flexible and dynamic than it is Now that Windows 7 is upon us, a familiar dread is falling over IT managers around the world.  Staff levels are often barely sufficient to support daily maintenance tasks, leaving an OS migration to mean many extra hours and restless nights.  First comes application retesting in every conceivable combination (in multiple images), application license reconciling, and system and personality backups.  Then come the expected weeks and months of helpdesk calls and lost productivity, as users discover the many additional ways that their systems and applications may become unstable or unusable.  All of this anticipation leads to envy of a hypothetical flexible environment where applications migrate without a hitch, systems dynamically configure themselves to the logged in user, and there are no sleepless nights.   Today, dreams of a flexible, dynamic computing environment are becoming a...

In SWV 6.1 there is a feature called "Auto Run From Layer". It would be nice to have a similar global feature "Auto Run From Base" that defines processes that should never run from a layer or at least act as if they were started from the base. An Example: right now when a user receives a mail (using virtualized mail software) containing a url to an installer and the user clicks this link, iexplorer.exe and ultimately even the installer when immediately run will run from this virtual layer. In many cases it is not the desired outcome to have this software installed in (the writable sublayer of) the layer. "Auto Run from Base" would provide a way to deal with this problem.

Symantec Workspace Corporate Demo Environment. Symantec Workspace Corporate is becoming more and more popular as people understand the value of fast user switching in a Virtual Desktop (VDI) environment. Because there is so much excitement around the product, many users are starting to install SWC in a lab environment. Symantec Workspace Corporate has always been designed and tested in production environments which leads to some interesting issues when setting up a system in a lab environment. This document addresses one of those issues. Why Contact IT Help Desk Occurs Symantec Workspace Corporate has been designed to enhance security at the endpoint. Systems that run as Internet applications like SWC are required to be trusted. In a production environment the user would have a valid certificate to assign to the Web site running SWC. Symantec Workspace Corporate ships with the ubiquitous selfssl certificate. This certificate is the primary reason for this error. A part of using...

Hi, I have virtulized a software package that our company is currently using and virtulized a new software update of the program. I was wondering if it was possible to run the two programs concurrently, as when I tried to do so the older version detected the new program and said it needed to be updated, also they use the same folders. Is it possible to have the two virtulized apps in seperate layers whereby they can both run at the same time with no conflict, and if so, could someone explain how? I am currently using SVS 2.1 and am unable to update to SWV 6.1, so can this be done using SVS? Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Hi, I've observed some weird behaviour when installing SWV and Wise Installation Studio on the same machine. What I want to do is create a setup.exe that contains the Workspace Virtualization Agent in runtime mode. For this I need to use Virtual Package Editor, which is part of Wise Installation Studio. To test this, I wrote a console program that reads the DWORD registry value HKLM\SOFTWARE\virt_test1\mykey. I did the following tests on two Windows XP SP3 virtual machines, one English and one German. Test 1 - install Wise Installation Studio - create setup.exe -> works Test 2 - install Wise Installation Studio - install SWV - create setup.exe -> does not work; the program can't read the registry value (RegOpenKeyEx() fails) Test 3 - install SWV - install Wise Installation Studio - create setup.exe -> does not work; the program can't read the registry value (RegOpenKeyEx() fails) Is this a known problem? Can anyone reproduce the behaviour? I can upload the files...
