ENVY: Wishing the environment was more flexible and dynamic than it is
Now that Windows 7 is upon us, a familiar dread is falling over IT managers around the world. Staff levels are often barely sufficient to support daily maintenance tasks, leaving an OS migration to mean many extra hours and restless nights. First comes application retesting in every conceivable combination (in multiple images), application license reconciling, and system and personality backups. Then come the expected weeks and months of helpdesk calls and lost productivity, as users discover the many additional ways that their systems and applications may become unstable or unusable. All of this anticipation leads to envy of a hypothetical flexible environment where applications migrate without a hitch, systems dynamically configure themselves to the logged in user, and there are no sleepless nights.
Today, dreams of a flexible, dynamic computing environment are becoming a...

In SWV 6.1 there is a feature called "Auto Run From Layer". It would be nice to have a similar global feature "Auto Run From Base" that defines processes that should never run from a layer or at least act as if they were started from the base.
An Example: right now when a user receives a mail (using virtualized mail software) containing a url to an installer and the user clicks this link, iexplorer.exe and ultimately even the installer when immediately run will run from this virtual layer. In many cases it is not the desired outcome to have this software installed in (the writable sublayer of) the layer.
"Auto Run from Base" would provide a way to deal with this problem.

Symantec Workspace Corporate Demo Environment
Symantec Workspace Corporate is becoming more and more popular as people understand the value of fast user switching in a Virtual Desktop (VDI) environment. Because there is so much excitement around the product, many users are starting to install SWC in a lab environment. Symantec Workspace Corporate has always been designed and tested in production environments which leads to some interesting issues when setting up a system in a lab environment. This document addresses one of those issues.
Why Contact IT Help Desk Occurs
Symantec Workspace Corporate has been designed to enhance security at the endpoint. Systems that run as Internet applications like SWC are required to be trusted. In a production environment the user would have a valid certificate to assign to the Web site running SWC. Symantec Workspace Corporate ships with the ubiquitous selfssl certificate. This certificate is the primary reason for this error.
A part of using...

When will Symatec deliver integration with Workspace Virtualization 6.1 and Notification Server 7.0?
The only solution available today is this:
"Symantec Workspace Virtualization 6.1 SP1 Integrated Installation
Download this installation to manage Symantec Workspace Virtualization from the Symantec NS 6.x Console (formerly the Altiris NS Console) using the Notification Server infrastructure."

Hi,
I have virtulized a software package that our company is currently using and virtulized a new software update of the program. I was wondering if it was possible to run the two programs concurrently, as when I tried to do so the older version detected the new program and said it needed to be updated, also they use the same folders.
Is it possible to have the two virtulized apps in seperate layers whereby they can both run at the same time with no conflict, and if so, could someone explain how? I am currently using SVS 2.1 and am unable to update to SWV 6.1, so can this be done using SVS?
Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Hi,
I've observed some weird behaviour when installing SWV and Wise Installation Studio on the same machine.
What I want to do is create a setup.exe that contains the Workspace Virtualization Agent in runtime mode. For this I need to use Virtual Package Editor, which is part of Wise Installation Studio. To test this, I wrote a console program that reads the DWORD registry value HKLM\SOFTWARE\virt_test1\mykey. I did the following tests on two Windows XP SP3 virtual machines, one English and one German.
Test 1
- install Wise Installation Studio
- create setup.exe
-> works
Test 2
- install Wise Installation Studio
- install SWV
- create setup.exe
-> does not work; the program can't read the registry value (RegOpenKeyEx() fails)
Test 3
- install SWV
- install Wise Installation Studio
- create setup.exe
-> does not work; the program can't read the registry value (RegOpenKeyEx() fails)
Is this a known problem? Can anyone reproduce the behaviour? I can upload the files...

Hi,
I'm trying to install Windows Media Player 9 in an application layer on Windows 2000 SP4. SWV with admin is installed and works. Installing WMP9 into the base OS works as well. When installing into an application layer the install progress bar hangs at 55 %. I tried single capture, global capture and running the setup from a captured cmd.exe. Always the same result. Is this a known issue? I couldn't find anything in the forums. Searching the knowledge base at https://kb.altiris.com/, I just found mentioned that installing Windows components is not supported. Is this still the case? Is WMP considered a Windows component?

Hi all,
i have an XP box with two disks C & D with svs21 installed. I changed the fslrdr location to drive D: because D: is my data disk (c is system) and it is saved daily. All worked perfectly until i had to reformat my system c: drive.
I now have all my nice & preciously backed up layers in the fslrdr forder of the D: drive but i discovered that i am now missing the data from the registry of the c drive. Is there a way to rebuild that data so that i can reuse the apps in my fslrdr folders but with a new install of svs ???
Help ! :-(

I have a layer with file system priority of 70. In this layer I have a file: C:\test.txt (which contains the following text: "layer").
In the base, I have a file: C:\test.txt (which contains the following text: "base").
When I start winword.exe (from the base, this application hasn't been virtualized) and open C:\test.txt ... I get the file which contains "layer".
However I thought because winword was running from the base, the base's files would have a "BASE OWNER" priority (i.e. 65.5).
Why is winword opening the file in the layer?

We are currently experiencing some problems with programs installed in the base modifying layers.
Process A: image is in the base
Process B: image is in layerB
process B
|
|__> Process A
When launching process A from process B, all modifications done by process A are saved in the writable sublayer of layerB. I realize this is by design. Is there any way to avoid inheritance of the layer priority list by process A? (other than putting the image of process A in the programignore reg value because this implies that process A can't see layerB)
Thanks,
John

Hi:
I have several questions and was hoping someone could help me out.
1. I see an SVS agent in both NS and DS. Which one am I suppoed to push out to my clients? Does it not matter? I have a training course book for NS and one for DS. Since DS has a chapter about SVS, I'm assuming this is the one to use?
2. Is there a step by step guide (not covered in my book) to virtualizing an application, then deploying the virtualized application to an Altiris client using DS?
3. All of our clients (that I manage) are public use computers. Any student can use any computer (we have about 7,000 students and over a thousand computers). We don't allow roaming profiles so when the student logs off of a machine, his profile is deleted. Am I going to run in to problems with SVS in my management scenario? I need all settings reset upon logon. I did see an Altiris paper on "Software Virtualization Solution 2.1 Logon Hook...

The zip file containing the installation files for SWV contains a pdf document "Symantec_Workspace_Virtualization_6_1_SP1_User's_Guide.pdf" that describes how to use SWV.
In this document, in the technical reference section there is a table (Table 6.1) that contains - at least for me - confusing information. It's pretty clear what the "Parameter" and "Associated Flags" headers refer to. But what's with the "n o i t p"-header.

Hello,
I'm trying to use the Workspace Virtualization Agent in combination with Wise Installation Studio and one of the target platforms is Windows 2000. I had some problems getting this to work. One of them is that SWV 6.1 SP1 does not install on my Windows 2000 SP4 virtual machine. I ran the installer Software_Virtualization_Agent.msi from the command line and had it write a log file. It seems like there is a custom action that fails because a DLL can not be loaded. Here's an excerpt from the log file:
MSI (s) (40:C8) [11:18:02:062]: Executing op: ActionStart(Name=fslxRollbackInstallProductSecurity,,)

Has anyone else experienced any errors when doing a Novell login with a virtual application activated?
Our scenario is with any version of 6.1 (6.1.4108, 6.1.4113, 6.1.5104) and any virtual version of Office (97, XP or 2007).
If one of these applications is active when a user (without admin rights) logs into the workstation using Novell we get some errors on our Active Setup files and some VB6 apps, that ad themselves to the systray, give the invalid picture 481 error. If you wait 10 to 15 seconds and rerun the vbapp, it Launches to the systray just fine.
If you select "workstation only" through Novell and simply log into the domain, everything functions as expected. Also, if you have admin rights and login through Novell, you do not get an error.
We did not see any of these errors/issues when using SVS 2.1.
If you have any thoughts or would like any more information, please let me know. We currently have SVS 2.1 installed on 17,000 nodes and were migrating...

Hello,
I notice this strange behavior.
After creating my layer by the global capture method (on Windows XP), i try to suppress the folder [Windir]\Preftech from the read only files section.
This folder contains .pf files
The result is that SWV is on "time out" and the only way to take the control is to kill the task.
Even if i restart the machine this folder seems to be locked.

Hi
I found a big problem with a data layer creation and managing.
Following this step I create a folder not accessible by explorer:
1) Install on a new machine with Xp pro SP3 ITA last version of SWV (6.1.5104) and reboot
2) Create a DataLayer
3) Specify datalayer to capture folder "c:\test "
3) Editing the layer and create folder "test" under [SYSTEMDRIVE] of RO sublayer
4) Activate the layer
5) Open Explorer and go to "c:\test"
6) Create a new folder (ie "new folder")
7) Deactivate the layer, then reactivate
8) Open Explorer and go to "c:\test\new folder"
At this point Explorer show an error and doesn't permit to enter into the folder
It's a known problem? I use an incorrect mode to make the test?
TIA
Sax
