Are there any diagnostics in Veritas Backup Exec 9.1 that I can run to check that the Tape HW and TAPE are OK?

I managed to restart Veritas Backup exec and it does seem to recognise the Tape drive but still no joy in backing up. I have a new set of tapes - what do I need to do to get these ready for backups? is there a process? Thanks David
