Search Tips & Tricks

Symantec Connect allows you to search for content using a combination of words, phrases and advanced search operators ("+" and "-"). A set of examples on how to use search features follows.

Search Terms and Phrases

When you enter one or more terms or phrases, Search treats those as "Should Have" portions of your query, meaning that content that contains more of your search terms ranks higher in the results than content that contains fewer of your terms. You can enclose phrases in quotes to have Search treat the words in that phrase as a single unit.

Examples:

  • security
Search for content containing the word "security"
  • "security system"
Search for content containing the phrase "security system"
  • "security system" antivirus
Search for content containing the phrase "security system" and/or the word "antivirus"

Advanced Operators

You can prefix a term or phrase with the "Must Have" (+) and "Must Not Have" (-) operators. These tell Search that content in the results either must have or must not have the term or phrase.

Examples:

  • security +antivirus
Results must contain the word "antivirus". Documents that also contain the word security will rank higher in the search results.
  • security -antivirus
Results should contain the word "security" but must not contain the word "antivirus".
  • security "conference location" -"cancelled due to rain"
Results should contain the word "security" and/or the phrase "conference location", but must not contain the phrase "cancelled due to rain"
