  EV Manuals

  Lots of times I refer back to the EV manuals to see whether something that I “discover” is actually documented.  I have a copy locally on my machine in the office of many of the manuals, from many of the different versions.  I had often wondered about an externalised version of them, and whether they were easy to find.   EV Connection Status

  In the EV Outlook Client trace you very often see the Connection Status listed as a number.. well, what does the number mean ? 0 = Unknown connection.  You sometimes see that near the start of a client trace. 1 = Online 2 = Offline 3 = No Exchange 4 = Disconnected 5 = Cached Mode, Offline 6 = Cached Mode, Disconnected 7 = Cached Connected, headers only 8 = Cached Connected, Full items 9 = Cached Connected, “Drizzle Mode”   These are of course the Outlook to Exchange connection states, and the EV Outlook Add-in often needs to know what state things are in so that various operations can be performed (or not as the case may be).

  RichCopy and RoboCopy

  Hello All, In our field many of the times we need to migrate the data from volume-to-volume or may be folder-to-folder. In these cases simple copy paste won't help us. Recently I had ended up in the same remedy of moving B2D data from one storage LUN to another with data size crossing TB. Copy paste was giving errors, stopping in between, blah blah... Then I used these tools from Microsoft to copy the data and it worked very well. That is why I am sharing these tools to you. These are free utilities from Microsoft.   EVPM Script does not apply custom retention categories to custom folders

  I created a initialization file that would apply different retention categories based on company policy for certain folders in Outlook.  I run the script and it does not apply the retention category to the folders I selected.   The script will create the folders listed below but will not apply the retention categories as expected.  Here is a copy of the script...need assistance and input ASAP...   How to discover the Saveset ID from the Item ID in Discovery Accelerator

  Using Discovery Accelerator you find an item that is failing to export using the export or production features in Discovery Accelerator So now you need to prove the item exists in the archive. There are two ways to do this 1. Search in EV and dig through mounts of results to fine the one item 2. Find the item Saveset ID and then search in EV by Saveset Option one make little sense as the search will be fast but unless your search is very, very targetted chances are you will get back hundreds if not thousands of results which will take you hours to look through to find the one item you need Option two is the easier way to go as it will get you the saveset and then you just search for the saveset or in the case of a Centera you can extract the saveset direct from the Centera device.   Microsoft Message Queuing (MSMQ)

  I always get asked about MSMQ, here is a short note on things to look at if you have MSMQ issue's, even if you don't have issues you can always benefit from tweaking MSMQ and enhance Enterprise Vault’s performance. Microsoft Message Queuing (MSMQ) The root cause I believe lies in the way MSMQ stores messages. In the Storage directory (normally under windows\system32\msmq) will be a number of 4MB files that will contain the messages. Each file can contain as many messages as will fit which works quite well to start with. If a message cannot fit into one storage file, though, because it is too big for the remaining free space then a fresh file is created. There can only be as many storage files as would fit within the storage quota and when this limit is reached then no more storage files can be created. For example from windows 2003 SP2, a 2GB quota could accommodate 500 4MB storage files. In older versions Microsoft used to have an 8GB quota...

  Some More Tips to Share

  Hey all! Did you all know that we now have a new rewards system in place? Considering the changes made to it, I would want to revisit the tips that I shared with you in my last blog. My point of focus is yet again the "Voting"  and "Mark as Solution" features. Now, when your post is marked as a solution you gain 25 points, while your votes to the posts will no longer gain you 0.5 points. Instead, with every thumbs-up you make to a post, the respective author will be adding some points to his kitty. If you think that voting is a benefit to the content authors and not you, its definitely not. You do a favor now to your peers and they will return your favor back when you have some content posted. It's a give and take policy. Therefore, make it a point to make "Voting" and "Marking as a Solution" part of your routine. Check this out for...

  Some Tips to Share

  Today, I have some updates and great tips to share... . Talking about the Connect metrics, we see some pretty steady numbers since the site launched. This indicates that our community is continuing to grow and be healthy. The response rate to the threads have greatly improved, especially on the Backup and Archiving boards compared to the past. Thank you all for your time and effort. One feature that is not being used to the fullest is the ability to post the thread "SOLVED". Users who initiate the thread, along with the TA's, Managers and Moderators, have the capability to post the thread as "Solved". In doing so, this feature becomes handy, particularly when others are looking for a solution for similar problems they have with the products. Also, it gives us all a clear picture on how successful the community is in solving those issues. Every post on the community has the feature enabled.
