Hello everyone,

I recently ran across an article that noted a product liability case where the defendant was given almost a $1 million dollar sanction by the court because of their “’egregious’ misconduct and ‘contumacious disregard for the Court’s’ authority’”.  Wow, that is one big slap on the wrist.  But when you dive in deeper, there are many issues that the court found that led to the conclusion that the defendants interpreted the rules for preservation too loosely and got caught.

As I has said many times to our various partners, customers have (or should have) their own legal counsel to recommend an appropriate retention and preservation policy in regards to data.  And it is up to us to find a solution that will meet their requirements.  But we owe it to our customers to provide to them (if possible) the broadest protection for the solution that meets their requirements.

Hello everyone,

I recently read an article by Amelia Schmidt titled, “SEC to Focus on Corporate Cybersecurity Risks in 2014”.  She noted that,

“Cybersecurity has continued to be a focal point for the SEC, especially in the face of mounting Congressional pressure on the agency to demand more transparency from companies about their cybersecurity risks and steps taken to address those risks, and recent reports of cyberattacks against U.S. companies and the massive costs to those companies that result.”

Many of our customers worry about security of their archive data.  It is imperative that we not only protect their data, but that they actually have confidence...

At this year’s EDGE Summit in April, Symantec polled attendees about a range of government-specific information governance questions. The attendees of the event were primarily comprised of members from IT, Legal, as well as Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) agents, government investigators and records managers. The main purpose of the EDGE survey was to gather attendees’ thoughts on what information governance means for their agencies,...

Enterprise Vault by it's nature is a "background" engine, and thus does not have much in the way of real time monitoring tools.

This is a method of watching EV working in real time. It is particularly useful for monitoiring Journaling Mailboxes, which have constant activity, but works just as well during archiving, providing you are watching while archiving is actually taking place.

You may need to manually run an archiving task to trigger activity.

This is premised on the Fact that EV uses the Exchange "Message Class" to identify EV Objects like shotcuts, and pending items, and tie them to the appropriate Exchange Forms to display the correct icons and content.

Ensure that the archiving schedule allows Archiving and / or PST Migration at the time you want to monitor the process in outlook.

Open users outlook
Display inbox (or folder of interest)

Add columns to the display Outlook 2010...

Today I was fighting with the pretty often case. User complained scheduled archiving doesn't archive items thus the mailbox reaches its quota.

Usually the reason of that is lot of new items or items were restored recently, which aren't eligible for archiving by age. But this time I saw a lot of old items, which were not archived.

I checked dtrace log for calling method CArchivingAgent::IsEligibleForArchive(), hoping to find a reason why definitely eligible iteam appear not eligible. But instead I've found out there are much less items checked then mailbox contains. So I tried to find any information on getting list of items and found following entries:

EFP - Folder Policy Settings for [Inbox]|  Filter Type = Not archiving this folder (do not archive)|  Archive Settings Locked = FALSE|  Override Locks = FALSE|  Delete Original = FALSE|  Create Shortcut = FALSE|  Archive unread items = FALSE|  Archiving based on...

Social media is no longer new news.  What is though, is how to collect, preserve and review that data when it comes time to in litigation.  This process starts with having a sounds policy and understanding how your organization is using Social Media.  There are a multitude of resources like this webcast,  blog, or video that can further expound on the status of social media today and what organizations need to consider.  There are also multiple other resources such as an example policy and some slides that may help you start the conversation within your organization.
