Thinking about archiving your information in the cloud? You likely have questions, such as:

  • Where will our information be stored?
  • What security is used to protect our information in the archive?
  • What is the TCO for a cloud-based archiving solution?
  • Do I still need a third party archive with Office 365 and/or Exchange 2013?

Join Joshua Stageberg from our product management team and me @ Vision 2013 to get the facts about cloud-based information archiving and an overview of Symantec Enterprise Vault.cloud.

We will also be joined by two enterprise customers who will share their real-world perspective on moving their organizations’ information archiving to the cloud.

Don’t miss the facts! Register for this session today:

Some of the little utilities which come with Enterprise Vault are really quite powerful and useful. Take the EVSPShortcutManager utility, for example. This utility was introduced in Enterprise Vault 9.0.1 and runs on the SharePoint server, rather than the more normal location of the Enterprise Vault server. So what does it do? Read on for more details…

The utility allows you to do a number of important and interesting things with your SharePoint archived items. These are:

* Replace all HTML shortcuts with seamless shortcuts

This is important because prior to Enterprise Vault 8 SP 3 the SharePoint archiving component would archive items from within SharePoint and replace them with a HTML link. These weren't that great to be honest, and broke numerous things like workflows, and any existing links to the document on...

A good Information Governance approach that include powerful archiving and eDiscovery tools, seems to be useful only for companies working in US or UK and all the countries where internal regulations enforce the implementation of processes that follow the EDRM model. Looking at the South African example doesn't seem to be the case.

I just want to recall few points coming from these articles:

It is a pretty rare situation for Enterprise Vault to be involved in a security advisory, but, I spotted this one on the RSS feed the other day. It relates to an unquoted search path and affects Enterprise Vault File System Archiving (FSA).

But fortunately there are fixes.

If you're running Enterprise Vault 8 or earlier, then you need to upgrade to 9.0.4 or higher. If you're coming from a version below Enterprise Vault 8 remember that you'll need to go through each version, in order to get to Enterprise Vault 9 (or higher).

If you're running a version of Enterprise Vault 9, then you need to upgrade to 9.0.4 (which should be nice and straight forward) or to Enterprise Vault 10.0.1 or later.

If you're running Enterprise Vault base release (then you're brave anyway!) and should upgrade to 10.0.1 or higher.

There are some best practices which are described in the first technote, which are something which should...

Some people might say that it's a minor annoyance, but inconsistencies really bug me.  What am I talking about?  I'm talking about being able to archive a whole folder with the Enterprise Vault Outlook Add-in.  Specifically a whole public folder.

A few revisions ago when the Enterprise Vault Outlook Add-in was extended to support all functionality in the HTTP client, so that all-the-expected-functionality was available for Outlook 2010 and higher, we got back the ability to store a whole folder in an archive:

But, as I found out the other day, you can't do this on a folder inside the Public Folder hierarchy:

Last night I read a note about the release of Enterprise Vault 10.0.3 Cumulative Hotfix 1.  It's actually not just another release that can be ignored, it's quite important. In the note is this text:

Source ETrack
Value 3011655
Description

Attachment content may not be indexed in certain circumstances when indexes with legacy data are being upgraded

Now at face value it doesn't seem terribly important, but an associated technote gives...

There are many organisations that want to implement File System Archiving, and each and everyone seems to have an odd request that they want to see accomplished during the evaluation of their archiving strategy. Usually it's straight forward enough such as not archiving items with a particular file extension. FSA with Enterprise Vault can easily do that. An odd one though is not archiving files based on a partial filename match.

For example you may not want to archive files that have 'JET' in their filename. You can do that with Enterprise Vault, by creating a rule like this:

1. Edit the Folder Policy for the place that you want to make the exclusion.

2. On the Rules tab add a new rule, and make sure the rule type is 'Do Not Archive'

3. Make sure the rule is high up in the list, before...

Vision Las Vegas 2013 will offer a wonderful opportunity for you to catch up on all things Symantec. During the many breakout sessions, we will educate you on various aspects of the Symantec product portfolio, but for sheer entertainment AND education, you have to attend session 1A B27, “Exchange Server on trial for crimes against archiving and eDiscovery”, to be presented by the dynamic Symantec duo of Alex Brown and Shawn Aquino, whose “Hangover 2.5” breakout scored the highest ratings among all Vision Las Vegas 2012 sessions last year.

Why? Justice needs to be served.

Intended for IT administrators and IT managers considering the built-in archiving and eDiscovery capabilities of Exchange 2010 or Exchange 2013, the session will highlight that these built-in capabilities are not good enough for most customers. Moreover, we feel Microsoft...
