As a good practice to follow, it is an idea to export the contents of the IIS Metabase before making significant changes to IIS configuration.  Especially if it's "several" changes, that you're likely to forget about within 5 minutes of making them!

To export the metabase follow these simple steps you can backup/restore the whole configuration by opening IIS Manager, and right clicking on the server name and choosing "All Tasks" -> "Backup/Restore Configuration" :

You can also export just the web sites by right clicking on the Web Sites node, and choosing “All Tasks” –> “Save Configuration to a File” :

This puts the configuration out to an XML file, that you can specify, and optionally lets you password protect...

When setting up Vault Cache you can indicate the size of the cache that you want to allow on end-users workstations.  Picking the number is a balance between space consumed on the workstation, space available, amount of impact you want to have on the EV server in order to build the data, and the ongoing load on the EV server keeping the data up to date, and retrieving missing data when a user requests it.

As described previously, the Vault Cache consists of :

a/ A metadata cache

b/ Archived content (cache, I guess)

The size that you set in the policy, or override on a per workstation basis, is the total of these two aspects.  There is one caveat though.  Your MDC will always be downloaded, full fidelity.  What that means is described in the examples below :

If you limit the size to 2 Gb, and your MDC file is 250 Mb, then you can have up to 1750 Mb of archived content.

A question I was asked the other day was whether I can have Virtual Vault in the Enterpris Vault Outlook world, without any archived content on the end-users workstation.

The answer is yes..  Nearly :)

Vault Cache consists of two components :

a/ A metadata cache

b/ Archived content (cache, I guess)

Whether the users desktop policy says to have content or not, you always have the metadata cache for each archive that you synchronise.  This is seen on the client as one (or more) .MDC files.

You can't get away from having that.  If you delete it, next time Outlook starts you will get a new one (placing a burden on the Enterprise Vault server hosting your archive) and until that MDC is built on the client, the contents of Virtual Vault (even the hierarchy) will be incomplete.

So that's why I say "yes"... nearly :)

A colleague of mine introduced me to TinyGet a few weeks ago.  Since then it's been my friend!  TinyGet is a tool which can be used to make calls to a web server, to simulate traffic for example.  It's part of the IIS 6 Resource Kit, which is available to freely download from Microsoft's web site.

Here is an example of call you might wish to make :

tinyget -srv:localhost -uri:/enterprisevault/listarchives.aspx -auth:1 -u:ev\pfg3 Passw0rd -threads:30 -loop:50

If you run that from your EV server, it will talk to the localhost on the URL you mention, with a specific username and password, spinning up 30 threads, and looping 50 times in total.

You get a very satisfying spew of information in to your IIS logs, and of course whilst that's running you could then do other things, like retrieval of archived items from the Outlook client, to see whether the load on the EV server impacts the performance of the client operation....

People using FSA Reporting should be aware that there can be an accumulation of .OUT files on the EV server or File Server, and that they might be clumped together and date back a long time.  These can take up considerable space.  The cause of this is FSA Reporting.  What can happen is that if an FSA Reporting scan errors out/fails/crashes the .OUT files don't get cleaned up.

You can move the location of these temporary files, by doing the following :

Add the following registry key : HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\KVS\Enterprise Vault\FSA\Reporting\TempFilePath.  "TempFilePath" should specify a folder path on the server under which FSA Reporting stores its temporary data files. FSA Reporting creates a subfolder named FSAReports under the specified path, in which to hold the temporary files.

Everyone must have run Outlook /CleanReminders at some point, but sometimes it is interesting to know why it might be necessary to do that.

Well the usual reason is that either reminders are coming up all over the place, or that reminders are not working at all.

Here is a nifty bit of code that will enumerate the reminders table in Outlook.  You can run it using either Outlook Spy via the Script option, or natively in Outlook 2003 (and Outlook 2007 and Outlook 2010) by pressing Alt-F11, and then adding this code to the ThisOutlookSession area :

As you are probably aware, daylight savings time starts again on Sunday morning (March 13).
After the time changes, automatically scheduled jobs will not run at their desired time. To resolve this issue, services should be restarted on all nodes.
To accomplish this:
1.       Login to the EVDC dashboard
2.       Please be sure no jobs are running
3.       Select <About clustered appliance> at bottom right of dashboard
4.       Select <restart services on all nodes> at bottom right of pane
5.       You will be logged out of dashboard, wait a few minutes, and log back in, all nodes should be green. If they are not green after about 15 minutes, please contact support.

Note: rebooting the system is NOT required or desired....

This has been tested by the EV QA team to ensure the crash no longer occurs.  Both Mailbox and Journal archiving have been validated.

The compatibility charts and deployment scanner are being updated for EV 9.0.2 and the TechNote should be updated soon.

I just read this morning that Microsoft have released two new roll-ups :

Update Rollup 3 for Exchange 2010 Service Pack 1

Update Rollup 3 for Exchange 2007 Service Pack 3

As normal, our QA / Certification teams won't be officially certifying against these two new releases (some testing and general use will take place).  That doesn't mean that these aren't supported .. if you install it, always go the lab-route first of all, and if you encounter any problems let us know.
