I’m excited to have a guest Blogger Rudy McNeese and the Heathrow, Florida office join the Countdown to Better Backup. Today we opened the launch countdown window for Instant Disaster Recovery with P2V and B2V.

With this capability Backup Exec 2012 will expand add two new key capabilities, physical to virtual conversions, known as P2V, as well as the ability to backup to virtual format, known as B2V.

The P2V process utilizes parallel data streams to store backup data from a protected server to a Backup Exec 2012 server while simultaneously sending the same backup data, in the form of a virtual machine, to a virtual host in the environment for both VMware vSphere and Microsoft Hyper-V environments.

The result of a P2V operation is a fully recoverable backup set as well as a fully functional virtual machine that can be used for permanent virtual conversion operations as well as warm failover, disaster recovery scenarios.

The B2V...

Why Roseville?

We started the NetBackup and Backup Exec launch sequence this week with the release of the Countdown to Better Backup Calendar. This was modeled after the idea of an Advent Calendar. Every few days we will open a new window to reveal a new feature of the launch calendar leading up to the product launch. As part of the launch effort each square on the calendar will open in a different city worldwide. This helps us reach our customers and partners in cities around the world and it gives us a chance to bring together all the people who have worked on the release.

Often in marketing it is hard to deliver technical information to the end customers. Everyone is busy, and there is so much noise online it is hard for product announcements to reach customers. One just needs to post a question on LinkedIn asking question about a technology to...

In a coupe of days time I will have been looking after Backup Exec in some shape or form at Symantec for eleven years. Sales, pre-sales, regional technical leader and now as Subject Matter Expert. In that time I've known software and that's it, really. Certainly, like any pre-sales guy I could make the hardware do useful stuff but it was software driven.

So what's with backup appliances? Software and hardware in one go. Some time ago Symantec launched the first NetBackup appliance and with a series of appliances now available it seems that the business is going from strength to strength. But It's not like e-mailing a license key or buying boxed product software. There are incredibly slick processes being running in the background managing the logistics and I'm in awe of the people who make it happen. I'm lucky enough to call some of them friends. They do the hard work so you don't have to; but more of that later.

Cloud is the answer. It has to be doesn't it? And its all about software, right? Wrong. I'm at VMworld in Copenhagen this week and its not just about software and its not all about virtual. Sean Regan walked around the show and found 14 hardware boxes that weigh more than him. Cloud? Maybe - clouds aren't weighed down by steel boxes. Consolidation? Maybe. Some of its expansion, especially in storage, but shhh, don't tell anyone; its a secret.

From customers I've talked to here it seems to be all about doing more with existing hardware. Getting the cloud you want from the infrastructure you've got. That sounds like its a blend of physical and virtual, not just all about virtual. Symantec can take the hardware you've got today and help you build a cloud infrastructure on top of it in partnership with VMware. Once you've built that infrastructure, we'll help you protect it too. Can you imagine deploying a physical production...

Lauren Whitehouse at ESG had an interesting blog post a couple of weeks ago about the battle between two vendors in the virtual backup space and their childish twittering about who ruled more. It got me thinking about the mad rush by all vendors to capitalize on the virtualization movement. Somehow in the race to rule VMworld someone forgot to inform the real world that there can't be 4 #1 vendors in the same space. Unpossible!

So Lauren, thank you for bringing a reasoned voice to the conversation. It is Twitter wars like the one that triggered your blog that have created a need for organizations to investigate social media archiving, something we added to the new release of Enterprise Vault 10 and covered in a recent survey. Putting all of the good...

As I've struggled my way through this last week on jet lag, limited sleep and caffeine at Symantec's Worldwide Sales and Marketing Conference, two things have struck me. The first is that Backup Exec has a special place in a lot of peoples' hearts. Its roots can be traced back around 30 years and there is a very real passion - among the sales force and pre-sales groups in Symantec, within the channel partner community and among our customers too. We brought themed "Backup Exec Boot Camp" t-shirts and hats to the conference as prizes and throughout the week more and more employees and partners were wearing them - through their own choice. Supporters if you like, but certainly a very loyal following that’s prepared to shout about it from the rooftops. If you want to get one for yourself, look out for the regional Boot Camps we're going to be running around EMEA in the coming weeks and months. Travelling around EMEA, I meet partners who...
