Indiana Storage & High Availability User Group
Minutes from September 14, 2010

 

The sixth meeting of the Indiana Storage & High Availability User Group was held on Tuesday, September 14, 2010 at Dave&Buster’s in Indianapolis, IN.  11 individuals attended, representing eight distinct organizations.  Symantec was represented by two local attendees.

The meeting began with lunch at 12:00 and was catered by Dave&Buster’s.  At 12:30, we got down to business, with group president Brian Doyle welcoming the group and highlighting the agenda for the session.

After proceeding around the room and having all attendees introduce themselves, Brian Doyle presented a description of how Sallie Mae uses Veritas Foundation Suite to provide highly-available Catalog Backups at their DR site.  Challenges that Sallie Mae faced include:

  • a large NBU catalog
  • recovery that takes longer than desired...

In today’s economic climate many things may be uncertain; however, one thing you can be certain of, is that financial institutions will continue to generate data. To indicate how much more, recent research studies predict IT organizations can expect to manage 40-60 percent more storage in the coming year. The challenge is they are managing this growing information with tighter budgets.

During periods of robust economic growth, organizations may be tempted to take the “quick fix” to storage management problems. The incremental cost of adding storage is relatively small, and can be absorbed by the budget. Unfortunately during periods of tight budgets, funds are not available for incremental capacity purchases.
