Hi All,

As Rob Wilcox pointed out Exchange 2010 SP2 Update Rollup 1 has been released by the Exchange team (click here for Rob's post). Included in this update is the fix to ensure deleted space is reclaimed.

The following Microsoft KB article describes the issue that has been fixed.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2621266

The update has been tested and whitespace reclamation is working as per my previous blog (see here).

Customers currently running the Interim update...

  1. Remove the interim update
  2. Upgrade to Exchange 2010 SP2 (this involves a schema change so you will need to do a /PrepareAD).
  3. Install Exchange 2010 SP2 Update Rollup 1 on your Mailbox...

Last night I saw that Update Rollup 1 for Exchange 2010 Service Pack 2 has been released. Take a look at the information on it here. You can download it here.

It is just under 30 Mb in size.

It is advisable to test this in your own test environment before deploying it.

Today I was playing with EV 9 + Exchange 2010. I have found out I have no EV functionality in OWA. While checking EV OWA log at Client Access server I've found such entry:

[EVContext::IsValidBrowser] Returning: False

I tried then several browsers: IE 9, Firefox 9, Aurora (Firefox 11), Chrome 16.0.912.77. So, only IE 9 gave expected result.

Later I've checked Compatibility Chart and ensured only IE 7, 8 and 9 are supported. However I don't understand why EV cares about browser used by OWA if all presentation (e.g. browser dependent layer) is implemented by OWA

A colleague reminded me of an old issue. It’s actually quite a rare Outlook setting, I would say, and it’s not one that I use. Some people use it and love it. The setting is :

“In folders other than the inbox, save replies with original message”

I wrote about an issue quite some time ago where this didn’t work with the Enterprise Vault 9.x series of Outlook Add-ins:

http://www.symantec.com/connect/blogs/replies-archived-items

I’ve just been looking at this in the upcoming 10.0.1 Client, and the good news is that it is fixed again.

This issue originally came up in early 2010, but I was reminded about it the other day when a colleague asked whether the issue still existed or not. I looked back over my blogs and discovered I didn’t write about it the first time around, so … here goes!

This issue only exists with Outlook 2007 on the Enterprise Vault server. It does not exist when Outlook 2003 is installed. I do not know about Outlook 2010 – and that is currently not supported anyway (on the EV server).

With Outlook 2007 installed, if PST migrations are done and/or Vault Cache is enabled for end users then a large number of entries may build up in the registry under the following location:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Outlook\Catalog

The entries will look something like this:

As you can see from that screenshot I’m getting a...

For people that haven’t seen it, take a look at the awesome whitepaper on running Enterprise Vault on VMWare from the Symantec TFE Team.

Following my earlier blogs about an issue with Enterprise Vault and SSL configured on the Enterprise Vault virtual directory in IIS on the EV server, there is now a post 9.0.3 Client hotfix available to correct the issue.

It’s available as:

* DCOM/HTTP variants

* All supported languages

.. so that should cover all the bases.

The screenshot above shows a few useful bits of information relating to Virtual Vault and Vault Cache which are stored in a users registry.  In this case it’s my registry on my corporate laptop.  Here is a run through of them:

OVCCLastCompletedTime

This is the last time that the Content Cache (a component of Vault Cache) downloaded content.  These are the .db files on disk.

OVEnabled

I have Vault Cache Enabled

OVMDCLastGoodSyncTime

The finishing time of the last good (ie non-failed) synch of the metadata cache, ie Virtual Vault, the .mdc file on disk

OVMDCLastSyncTime

The time of the last sync regardless of whether it was good or bad.  It’s the start time.

OVMDCNextSyncTime

The time of the next synchronisation attempt.  You can see from the example above...

I have to admit that I like the Enterprise Vault Client Driven PST Migration method.  There are plenty of things which can be done to improve it, but right off the bat, it does a pretty decent job of getting PSTs up to the Enterprise Vault server, from client machines.

To use it effectively there are a number of things to think about:

* PST Migration Policy

Review or create new ones in the VAC and assign them to users.

Also as part of this decide whether you are going to use the template mail EnablePSTMigrationMessage.msg.  This can be sent to end users when you enable them for client driven PST migration.

* Location of PSTs

Hopefully the end users are storing their Outlook connected PSTs locally on their machine.  Client driven migration can scan the whole end-user workstation, or just look under the ‘Documents and Settings’ folder for the user, when it runs.

I wasn't going to do one of those looking back at last years activities in Enterprise Vault-land, but in the end I couldn't resist the temptation.

What did 2011 bring us for Enterprise Vault?

Of course there is a multitude of things that were done to the product during the year which were released to customers, as well as a lot of work in the background for future service packs, and major product releases yet to be shipped.

Every person you speak to will probably have their own memories of EV during 2011.  This is just a few of the highlights that stick in my mind:

EV 9.0.2
Improvements to EVSVR

EV 9.0.3
IPv6
FIPS
Backtrace
All the post 9.0.2 client hotfixes, including the ability now for indexing on a workstation when Windows and Outlook versions are different bitness

EV 10.0
Many, many improvements, most notable is the 64 bit indexing engine...
