I’m excited to have a guest Blogger Rudy McNeese and the Heathrow, Florida office join the Countdown to Better Backup. Today we opened the launch countdown window for Instant Disaster Recovery with P2V and B2V.

With this capability Backup Exec 2012 will expand add two new key capabilities, physical to virtual conversions, known as P2V, as well as the ability to backup to virtual format, known as B2V.

The P2V process utilizes parallel data streams to store backup data from a protected server to a Backup Exec 2012 server while simultaneously sending the same backup data, in the form of a virtual machine, to a virtual host in the environment for both VMware vSphere and Microsoft Hyper-V environments.

The result of a P2V operation is a fully recoverable backup set as well as a fully functional virtual machine that can be used for permanent virtual conversion operations as well as warm failover, disaster recovery scenarios.

The B2V...

Why Roseville?

We started the NetBackup and Backup Exec launch sequence this week with the release of the Countdown to Better Backup Calendar. This was modeled after the idea of an Advent Calendar. Every few days we will open a new window to reveal a new feature of the launch calendar leading up to the product launch. As part of the launch effort each square on the calendar will open in a different city worldwide. This helps us reach our customers and partners in cities around the world and it gives us a chance to bring together all the people who have worked on the release.

Often in marketing it is hard to deliver technical information to the end customers. Everyone is busy, and there is so much noise online it is hard for product announcements to reach customers. One just needs to post a question on LinkedIn asking question about a technology to...

Symwise, our Symantec public knowledge base, offers the possiblity of performing specific searches on errors for each Product Agent and Option, which delivers a narrowed down and improved article result set which will help you find solutions faster and resolve issues most times on your own.

As a Backup Administrator and Backup Exec user, you should be acquainted with these search resources and use them as the first step in troubleshooting problems, before posting questions on the forums or calling the support line.

Accesing Symwise - the General Support Landing Page

To enter the General Support Landing Page, you must navigate to:

www.symantec.com/business/support

This is the general Landing Page, and although you can start searching here, it is convenient to first select a...

Labeling an LTO 3 tape with LTO 5 sticker will not matter at all with Backup Exec.

For LTO's, older tapes are backward compatible with newer drives as follows:

- The previous generation tape can be read/written.
- The generation previous to that can be read.
- Generations before that are not compatible.

eg: an LTO-5 drive can read/write LTO-5, can read/write LTO-4, can read LTO-3, and is incompatible with LTO-1/2.

Newer tapes cannot be used in older drives under any circumstances. So, placing an LTO 5 barcode label on an LTO 3 tape would not make it over-written by Backup Exec.

Vmware Backup Requirement:

Licence:

Backup Exec - AVVI agent licence

ESX - Vstorage API licence

Permission:

>> Through ESXi directly Requires a root account or an account equal to access the Vm and take snapshot.

>> Through Vcenter as described in the Article Here

Other requirements: (GRT And NON GRT)

>> Fault Tolerance based machine does not allow snapshot, hence avoid backing Up FT based VM's or Turn off FT on the machines

>> Either Vmware snapshot Provider or BE vss provider is a Must for Application level GRT.(recommended BE VSS)

Incremental and differential Job requirement:

>> hardware version: 7 for the virtual machines

>> Policy based full and Incremental/differential Job

>> change block tracking should be enabled (by default it is enabled , otherwise backup exec uses vstorage to enable...

IDC approached Symantec, unsolicited, for a briefing on V-Ray. They were looking to create an Insight Report for their customers as they had so many inquiries around V-Ray. You’ll find this to be a very comprehensive and technical write up that shows NetBackup’s leadership in virtual machine protection with VMware and Microsoft Hyper-V.

Well if you have got to this page you probably already have backups running to disk (and duplicate to tape) via the VCenter using AVVI and your looking to turbo charge your backups.

Well here are the simple truths.

  1. You muck this part up and the windows host initialises the LUN that your datastore is on… there goes all your VMs. You have been warned
  2. Getting Backup Exec to use the SAN is straight forward. Obviously your VMhosts and  BE Media Center  must be connected to the SAN via HBAs. The VCenter does not have to be, it is just acting as a “go between”
  3. If your backing up directly to tape, the only gain you are going to get is likely to be marginal as the tape drive is likely to be your bottleneck. But putting the backup traffic over the SAN switching fabric will free up bandwidth on your main network.
  4. If you are backing up to disk, then prepare for some major reductions in backup...

In a coupe of days time I will have been looking after Backup Exec in some shape or form at Symantec for eleven years. Sales, pre-sales, regional technical leader and now as Subject Matter Expert. In that time I've known software and that's it, really. Certainly, like any pre-sales guy I could make the hardware do useful stuff but it was software driven.

So what's with backup appliances? Software and hardware in one go. Some time ago Symantec launched the first NetBackup appliance and with a series of appliances now available it seems that the business is going from strength to strength. But It's not like e-mailing a license key or buying boxed product software. There are incredibly slick processes being running in the background managing the logistics and I'm in awe of the people who make it happen. I'm lucky enough to call some of them friends. They do the hard work so you don't have to; but more of that later.
