This blog is an attempt to explain the operation and describe a scenario support have seen with removable media. I have based all information provided by a combination of training and developer supplied details, as well as testing I have performed myself to validate the information.  Some of the behaviour documented is under review and may change in the future.

A few definitions to start things off:
- RDX, this is a specific type of removable media technology, however for simplicity I will use RDX to represent all types in the following notes

This blog is to outline some of the possible options to avoid backing up over the Corporate LAN in Backup Exec (BE). It does not discuss the specifics of configuration it just outlines the various options that might be available to show which environments might be more suitable to one option than another.

In practice members of technical support often see cases where customers ask something similar to the following:

How do I configure a LAN Free backup?
How do I backup over SAN?
How do I backup over Fibre-Channel?
How do I backup over iSCSI?
How do I backup across a backup or secondary network?

These are all really the same question:

How do I backup my environment without the data transfer using bandwidth over my user/corporate network (LAN)?

Backup Exec Corporate LAN Free Possibilities

  1. VMware SAN & Hot Add Transport mechanism
  2. Offhost Backup (ESO/ADBO)
  3. NDMP Option...

Even when a customer is face-to-face with a company employee, or interacting over the phone, it’s likely that the company employee is interacting with a computer application on the customer’s behalf.

As a result, there is greater pressure than ever on IT teams to keep corporate services and data available and resilient. In the 21st century, companies are their technology. The trust that they earn from customers depends on the availability and reliability of services.

Backup and recovery have become more important than ever. On the other hand, because IT teams need more time to develop new technology services that keep businesses competitive, there is less time for routine tasks such as backup and recovery. Companies need to streamline backup and recovery to minimize costs and resources, yet also protect faster-growing volumes of data at higher...
