IDC approached Symantec, unsolicited, for a briefing on V-Ray. They were looking to create an Insight Report for their customers as they had so many inquiries around V-Ray. You’ll find this to be a very comprehensive and technical write up that shows NetBackup’s leadership in virtual machine protection with VMware and Microsoft Hyper-V.

Setting up Backup Exec 2010 R3 to use SAN Transport Mode for backups using AVVI in Windows 2008 R2

Well if you have got to this page you probably already have backups running to disk (and duplicate to tape) via the VCenter using AVVI and your looking to turbo charge your backups.

Well here are the simple truths.

  1. You muck this part up and the windows host initialises the LUN that your datastore is on… there goes all your VMs. You have been warned
  2. Getting Backup Exec to use the SAN is straight forward. Obviously your VMhosts and  BE Media Center  must be connected to the SAN via HBAs. The VCenter does not have to be, it is just acting as a “go between”
  3. If your backing up directly to tape, the only gain you are going to get is likely to be marginal as the tape drive is likely to be your bottleneck. But putting the backup traffic over the SAN switching fabric will free up bandwidth on your main network.
  4. If you are backing up to disk, then prepare for some major reductions in backup...

It's software, Jim, but not as we know it

In a coupe of days time I will have been looking after Backup Exec in some shape or form at Symantec for eleven years. Sales, pre-sales, regional technical leader and now as Subject Matter Expert. In that time I've known software and that's it, really. Certainly, like any pre-sales guy I could make the hardware do useful stuff but it was software driven.

 

So what's with backup appliances? Software and hardware in one go. Some time ago Symantec launched the first NetBackup appliance and with a series of appliances now available it seems that the business is going from strength to strength. But It's not like e-mailing a license key or buying boxed product software. There are incredibly slick processes being running in the background managing the logistics and I'm in awe of the people who make it happen. I'm lucky enough to call some of them friends. They do the hard work so you don't have to; but more of that later.

Who's Looking After Your Clouds?

Cloud is the answer. It has to be doesn't it? And its all about software, right? Wrong. I'm at VMworld in Copenhagen this week and its not just about software and its not all about virtual. Sean Regan walked around the show and found 14 hardware boxes that weigh more than him. Cloud? Maybe - clouds aren't weighed down by steel boxes. Consolidation? Maybe. Some of its expansion, especially in storage, but shhh, don't tell anyone; its a secret.

 

From customers I've talked to here it seems to be all about doing more with existing hardware. Getting the cloud you want from the infrastructure you've got. That sounds like its a blend of physical and virtual, not just all about virtual. Symantec can take the hardware you've got today and help you build a cloud infrastructure on top of it in partnership with VMware. Once you've built that infrastructure, we'll help you protect it too. Can you imagine deploying a physical production...

After changing name or Domain of Backup Exec Server

Hi

The next step after changing name of Backup Exec server name is :

 

c:\program files\symantec\Backup Exec\Beutility.exe 

1-select the "All media server node"

2-select the "media server(I.E server21)"

3- Right click on the "(server 21)".

4-select Update Configuration to Reflect new Media Server Name

5- Enter the new Domain Name and the Server Name

6- Enter previous Domain Name and the Server Name.

Protect Dedupe device against failure and recover it Easy if it fails.

We Often Loose Data. If we, there is a failure and the recovery of the dedupe becomes tedious. To protect and recover dedupe in case of failure, below information would be helpfull

Protecting Dedupe:

1. Dedupe device Can be backed up as it is Using backup exec Using the Shadow Copy Components

its simmilar to the DFSR backup (Shadow Copy components -> Userdata -> backup exec Deduplication storage)

You will backup the configuration and the storage when Its backed up using the shadow copy components.

2. In ase of corruption you can restore the same back again to make it working.

As easy as that.

The rest of the Things are:

>> Exclude the dedupe device from AV scanning or any other third party access to the folder as that might corrupt the Data and links.
>> Have a Dedicated volume(probably a disk) for the Dedupe To avoid I/O bandwidth.

What does it traditionally take to set your environment with a backup server?

Well, first of all, you have to select the server that will become your media server. What specifications should it have and should you get warranty?

Then you need to find a storage solution. How much storage should you get, what brand, should you get an appliance that will allow the use of OST (Open Storage) for the oh-so-hot deduplication, and again, should you get warranty?

Now that you have chosen the hardware, you now need to purchase the server operating system and your trusted backup software, which would involve the core license as well as the agents for all the servers you are backing up and options including the deduplication option.

Once you have made all those purchases, it is now time to install and configure everything. Now, you are ready to back up your environment.

Force-guest Remote system

Issue:

Unable to push install RAWS in Force-guest Remote system

Cause:

We wont be to do the push installation on Force-guest Remote system since the guest users access is limited and it might not be in the same domain, hence we wont be able to do the push installation.

Resolution:

We can do the local installation by copying the RAWS to the system or with Symantec Backup exec disc we can install the RAWS locally

Backup Exec Sevices Issue

Issue:

Unable to restart the backup exec services from Tools menu, click Backup Exec Services

Error/Scenario:

While restarting the service the services gets hang, unable to stop the services or start the services

Resolution:

If the backup exec services hangs while restarting from Tools menu, click Backup Exec Services then we need to manually stop the services and start the services

We can start or stop the services manually from services.msc (Windows Services) option.

If the service is in "Stopping" or "Starting" status then we need to kill the services from task manager

Taskmanager >> Processes >>End the services.

After killing the services we can manually start the services and we can open the backup exec.

Unable to perform the VSS backup.

Issue:

Unable to perform the VSS backup.

Error:

Error code:  0x8000FFFF"

Event ID Logs:

Event Type: Error
Event Source: VSS
Event ID: 12302

Cause:

Issue with the corrupted registry settings

Steps to replicate:

Perform vssadmin list writers in cmd - If unable to get any writers listed need to follow the resolution.

Resolution:

We need to delete the registry key

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\EventSystem\{26c409cc-ae86-11d1-b616-00805fc79216}\Subscriptions

Note: Before deleting the registry key please backup the complete registry

After deleting the registry we need to restart the services

  • COM+ System Application
  • Microsoft Software Shadow Copy Provider
