Symwise, our Symantec public knowledge base, offers the possiblity of performing specific searches on errors for each Product Agent and Option, which delivers a narrowed down and improved article result set which will help you find solutions faster and resolve issues most times on your own.

As a Backup Administrator and Backup Exec user, you should be acquainted with these search resources and use them as the first step in troubleshooting problems, before posting questions on the forums or calling the support line.

Accesing Symwise - the General Support Landing Page

To enter the General Support Landing Page, you must navigate to:

www.symantec.com/business/support

This is the general Landing Page, and although you can start searching here, it is convenient to first select a product, in our case, Backup Exec.

The Backup Exec...

In a coupe of days time I will have been looking after Backup Exec in some shape or form at Symantec for eleven years. Sales, pre-sales, regional technical leader and now as Subject Matter Expert. In that time I've known software and that's it, really. Certainly, like any pre-sales guy I could make the hardware do useful stuff but it was software driven.

So what's with backup appliances? Software and hardware in one go. Some time ago Symantec launched the first NetBackup appliance and with a series of appliances now available it seems that the business is going from strength to strength. But It's not like e-mailing a license key or buying boxed product software. There are incredibly slick processes being running in the background managing the logistics and I'm in awe of the people who make it happen. I'm lucky enough to call some of them friends. They do the hard work so you don't have to; but more of that later.

Cloud is the answer. It has to be doesn't it? And its all about software, right? Wrong. I'm at VMworld in Copenhagen this week and its not just about software and its not all about virtual. Sean Regan walked around the show and found 14 hardware boxes that weigh more than him. Cloud? Maybe - clouds aren't weighed down by steel boxes. Consolidation? Maybe. Some of its expansion, especially in storage, but shhh, don't tell anyone; its a secret.

From customers I've talked to here it seems to be all about doing more with existing hardware. Getting the cloud you want from the infrastructure you've got. That sounds like its a blend of physical and virtual, not just all about virtual. Symantec can take the hardware you've got today and help you build a cloud infrastructure on top of it in partnership with VMware. Once you've built that infrastructure, we'll help you protect it too. Can you imagine deploying a physical production...

Issue:

Unable to restart the backup exec services from Tools menu, click Backup Exec Services

Error/Scenario:

While restarting the service the services gets hang, unable to stop the services or start the services

Resolution:

If the backup exec services hangs while restarting from Tools menu, click Backup Exec Services then we need to manually stop the services and start the services

We can start or stop the services manually from services.msc (Windows Services) option.

If the service is in "Stopping" or "Starting" status then we need to kill the services from task manager

Taskmanager >> Processes >>End the services.

After killing the services we can manually start the services and we can open the backup exec.

Applies To:

Backup Exec 2010

Backup Exec 12.5

I noticed an interesting tweet today from Rachel Dines @Forester. It quoted Carl Meadows @SungardAS.

"Common misconception: cloud solves our sys admin problems. Wrong! Cloud requires more skilled sys admins."

I have been thinking about this a lot lately as I drive down 101 to Mountain View from SF.  Each day someone gets in a fender bender and traffic continues around them. Sure, life is disrupted but it's par for the course. Sometimes car accidents happen. As I drive south I also pass under SFO. Each day 100s of planes take off. The expectation is that these planes will almost never have an accident. They are piloted by highly trained pilot while the car on 101 is piloted by someone like you and me.

Cars are like servers.  Planes are like Clouds.

  • When a plane crashes the media shows up at the scene, the bloggers speculate. Investigators start to look for the...

We have seen some bombastic marketing over the last several months in the data protection space.  One vendor stuffed 26 women in a Mini Cooper, and Veeam called platform proliferation “the next big thing” when they announced intentions to deliver Hyper-V support in December of 2011 – despite it being available for the past three years from Symantec. Let’s cut through noise and look at some of the underlying facts.

Innovative, Established and Proven

•                Over 15,000 companies already leverage Symantec’s Backup Exec for Hyper-V support. What Veeam has announced has been in the market for 3 years with Symantec Backup Exec.

•                Backup Exec protects over 75,000 virtual...
