This is a message about appending problems, you may have.

I am mis-using BackupExec and a LTO dirve as an archive, not as a backup.
So, I write once and store the tapes.

Appending goes very well, when you are writing lots of data for the first time.
When the tape is full, you are asked to put in a new one, and the writing continues.

You may have noticed, your second tape is not completely full.
So, next time you may decide you want to use it again, to append data to it. Fill it up, so to speak.

Now very often a problem occurs.
You start the backup job, put in the half filled tape.
Backup Exec keeps kicking the tape out, over and over again.
It will not accept this used tape to write on.

There is a solution to this problem!
You must group your media in backup exec.
This is called a media set.

1. On the navigation bar, click Media.
2. Under Media Set Tasks in the task pane, click New...

 I just wanted to share with you what I have found useful for upgrading your old version of BE for Windows Servers. There are a couple of steps that must be performed before doing any upgrades in order to have sufficient backup of your current BE server. Before beginning the upgrade, you need to backup your C:\Program Files\Symantec\Backup Exec\Data; C:\Program Files\Symantec\Backup Exec\Catalogs folders (if you are using external SQL database make sure you have your BEDB backed up) but before that make sure you have stopped your BE and embedded DB service (Backup Exec Server and BEDB service), so if something goes wrong with the upgrade you'll have your Catalogs and DB with you. The following is step by step upgrade from older than 11d version ov BE (only 11d can be upgraded to 12.5) that you need to perform one by one.

Backup Exec is a great application, my personal favorite. Recently I had issues with a backup, as you can see in one of my previous posts… the backup works fine, although compression will not turn on. It is known by most Backup Exec experts that Symantec Backup Exec enables compression when the job starts(if compression is configurable), but how do YOU know if Backup Exec is doing its job and possible the drive is to blame?

Well here is the answer, its called SGMON, its a debug tool that is used to view debugging information for Backup Exec components and services. SGMON is in “C:\Program Files\Symantec\Backup Exec\SGMON.exe for Backup Exec 12.5d installations. Earlier revisions its buried in the Symantec Backup Exec folder, best bet is to just search for sgmon.exe and you’ll find it easy enough.

Run SGMON, check off Job Engine; as below…

Hi,

we habe a quite big problem because we need to upgrade our Backup Licenses from 9.1 to the latest version...
Our last info was, that it is not possible to make an upgrade directly from 9.1 to 12.5 and we need to by the Licence and all the Agents new what is out of the question for our company becaus of the costs...

Maybe one of you can help me an give some proposals?

Symantec recently carried out its annual IT Disaster Recovery survey of 1,000 or so IT managers across 15 countries. Now, there are a bunch of really interesting facts and it’s well worth a read, but the staggering revelation I think is that the number of applications that IT managers consider mission-critical has jumped 20% in the last year. We all know that apps like email have crept up on us and become really important to business over the last few years. But what I think is interesting is that at some point in the last 10 years IT has ceased to support the business and become the business! What do I mean - if the lights go out the business stops. The IT Disaster Recovery survey shows that on average 56% of applications are now considered mission-critical. Such a rapid increase may well pose considerable difficulties for, not just high availability but things we take for granted like Backup.

This is particularly true for those organisations who have implemented...
