FYI - I chased this down via a support case, because I was concerned that this information was so difficult to find and I believe this kind of information should have been more easily available to us(?)

The below issue is referenced in:
http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=TECH218263

Short summary;: There is risk of corruption in SyBase (EMM and OpsCenter although note only mentions OpsCenter) on RHEL. Issue is between SyBase and RHEL Transparent HugePage features. It is not currently known to support whether issue is fixed in RHEL 6.4/6.5, but no matter what, it requires a fix in SyBase as well, which MAY be included in 7.6.0.3.

Until then, here is the workaround to disable THP in RHEL:

RHEL 6.x: /etc/sysctl.conf #Disable Transparent Huge Pages - Symantec TECH218263 transparent_hugepage = never...

Do you know about the NetBackup Analyzer tool?    Have you used it?    Do you use it yearly?

All questions that every NetBackup customer should be asking themselves.  The following story came to me recently from one of our Account Executives, Derek Hunter.  It reinforces the value of information and the use of a simple tool to improve the operation of an ever changing backup landscape.

Recently, Derek received a call from a frustrated NetBackup customer that was not able to make their backup windows. Following a short conversation, the customer agreed to run the NetBackup Analyzer to give us potential clues on their issue and to get a basic overview of their environment.

The NBU Analyzer took the customer ten minutes to run (a simple script) on their end and within 24 hours they received a call from Derek with results, a report and a suggestion to fix their concern.  By...

Objective:

To have a daily backup success rate report for the current month through OpsCenter custom query

Limitations with available report templates:

The available report templates either have partial successful job accounted as failures or are listed separately, they can however be excluded but then its brings down the success rate. Reports to the management should be precise and must not include much technical detailed information.wink, Just present them with only success & failure.

Requirement:

  1. Include partial successful jobs into successful list
  2. Ability to add any other status code which occurs out of scope of backup team's job profile [ eg: Status 71,73 ] as successful jobs...

For example, if you upgrade OpsCenter 7.5 to 7.5.0.6, an upgrade to OpsCenter 7.6 may fail. See TECH211070 for details.

Folks,

Symantec Celebrates success for new release netbackup 7.6 and appliance 2.6

First Availability (FA) Program Update

The NetBackup 7.6 First Availability Program launched in October 2013. It has been a success, with more than 900 customers signing up, and over 150 reported installations.

Customer feedback is overwhelmingly positive on the focus we have placed on quality.

NetBackup Appliances

- The Symantec NetBackup™ 5230 Appliance in a new 14 TB configuration with NetBackup 7.5 embedded will be available in early December.

- Appliances are expected to ship with NetBackup 7.6 on a USB stick in the beginning of 2014, which will enable customers to perform upgrades.

Attached a summary of questions asked during the meeting, perhaps helpful for the broader community.

We will be meeting in October/November timeframe. Once a date has been confirmed you will be automatically notified via connect.
If you have any questions, comments feel free to contact us!

Kind regards,

Ops Center (Free Product)

OpsCenter is a free product which gives you the ability to monitor, alert and do operational reporting on NetBackup, Enterprise Vault, Backup Exec and PureDisk. OpsCenter server is part of NetBackup and can be deployed on master server for managing a single domain, or independently for managing multiple NetBackup Domains. It also allows you to do minor management tasks such as “upping” tape drives, restarting failed jobs, freezing/unfreezing and other tape functions, restarting services/daemons on Masters etc. The free version limits historical reporting.
