I always believe that the best salesman is a person who really believes that his product is the best.   One way to know about the product is to explore its features and its value for money.  I have been working in the Data Security Domain for quite some time now and have worked on many backup products.   Exploring different products has always been a fun.  In the previous organization that I was working, I got a chance to explore 3 best of the breed backup products.  My manager had asked 3 vendors to show the POC of these products.  One vendor presented and showed us a demo on IBM Tivoli, the other vendor showed us a presentation and POC on HP Data Protector and the third vendor showed us a presentation and POC on Symantec Netbackup. This is where I got the chance to know about the 3 best software’s that I knew of and it was time for us to decide the best software.  Our environment consisted of few Sun Solaris Servers running...

A recent discussion showed that some NetBackup users think that "ALL_LOCAL_DRIVES" can only be used for windows clients.
It can be use for unix as well.

All local drives will work on UNIX just like it does on windows.

On windows clients it seems obvious that all local drives will be drives like C: and E: and F:
But for people who do not know UNIX very well this seems to have no relation.

My example is going to be for an AIX server.

Filesystem    512-blocks     Free      %Used     Iused     %Iused     Mounted on

/dev/hd4      2097152     1489784      29%      4585        1%         /

/dev/hd2      ...

Understanding how NetBackup writes to tapes and what happens when images expire will help you better manage your tapes.

Tapes are linear - meaning that they write from the front to the back.

if we look at a tape.

now the day1image expires on the tape - the assigned date does not change and you have this.

if you try to write to this tape again it will ONLY write in the blankspace as tapes are Linear - meaning they can only append (tapes cannot write here and there like a disk can)

Now day2image expires - the assigned date of the tape goes blank - no assigned date

Now look at it with multiplexing.

you use the tape - it gets an assigned date.

if the backup for server1 fails or if the backup image expires then you have this

Our second meeting went very well. It was great to see returning faces as well as new faces at Adesa in Carmel!

19 people attended from 14 different orginizations around the Indianapolis area!

Phil Weingart gave a quick overview of the backup environment at Adesa, touching on design challenges and future projects. We also had two very successful breakout sessions discussing Disaster Recovery and VCB Implementation.

Our next meeting is scheduled for December 8th. Stay tuned for details on time and location!

Attached are the meeting minutes, a copy of Phil's presentation, a write up on Sallie Mae's VCB Implementation, and a VCB Proxy Installation slide show.

Today i would like to share my experience with Tape cartridges which i had with my Tape Library in which(Tape cartridges) i was trying to remove specific images.....

I had Veritas Netbackup 6.5+MS windows2003 server and i was expiring specific backup image(s) from Netbackup administration console-->Catalog but when I was trying to use the command "available_media.cmd" i watched that the status still showing its FULL....even I close and open the command prompt so that it can refresh the status and even Netbackup Administration Console as well but i have not got any success...

Actually I wanted to keep some images in tape cartridges because some images were important for me that’s why I was not removing all those backup images from the tape via Veritas Netbackup GUI administration Console

Tapes are linear - meaning that they write from the front to the back....

Just wanted to give everyone a heads up, so that they don't run into the same nightmare as i did when upgrading from 6.5.3 to 6.5.4.. I had a fun 30 hour day getting bounced around the world with support only to go back to my initial suggestion of reverting to a catalog backup. With the addition of the db_marker.txt file and the behavior of the sun patchadd it can cause a nightmare if you are symlinking your db/images to another location..

the following applies if you are installing the upgrade using the patches provided by Sun..

If the following conditions are true, people need to take extra care when performing the upgrade using the Sun patches
• You are symlink’ing <install location>/openv/netbackup/db/images to another location
• And/or you are symlink’ing <install location>/openv/db/staging to another location
• you are upgrading by using the Sun Netbackup 6.5.4 patches (ie 127655-04)

If these are...
