My name is Elizabeth Teffner. I'm a Customer Research Analyst at Symantec. Our Customer Research group is organizing Customer Safaris to observe how Data Scientists, Database Administrators and Storage Administrators do their work.

What is a Customer Safari?

Customer Safari is where we come to your office and observe your day. Understanding how people work and go through their day helps us generate ideas on how we may make improvements or create new products or services. The best way to do this is to quietly sit and observe how a typical day for our customers goes.

If you are interested, we are looking for 3 to 4 hours to sit with you and observe.  There will be little interaction except for occasional clarification question. Also, this is not a sales call!  This is strictly a customer research project. During our visit...

Top Reasons to Upgrade to NetBackup 7.6

NetBackup 7.6 has been one of the most anticipated releases to date.  Looking at some of the data from our first availability program, a top reason customers were so interested in upgrading is the new virtualization capabilities.

Virtual environments are growing fast, data is growing faster, and new demands are being placed on IT to deliver better.  Enterprises need to be able to grow, transform, and modernize their data center to support these trends, but they need to do it in a SCALBLE way that’s not going to put them at risk.  That’s where NetBackup comes in – the backup product that 80 of the top Global Fortune 100 companies choose to protect their data.

Below are some of the top reasons you shouldn’t delay upgrading from a previous version of NetBackup.  Click here to get the...

I wanted to share the latest updates on the new version of CatMan toolset. We have now re-architected the data transfer portion of the tools to make it more resilient and reliable. The version with this feature set is 2.5.4. The main changes are as follows:

  1. Bi-directional communications between the source and target: We now use two ports 9998 and 9999 to communicate between the source and target machines. With this bi-directional communications, both the source and target are in sync with each other and each side knows if there are any failures on the other side.
  2. Multiple Re-tries for data chunks: As you already know that we break the data up into multiple chunks of max 10 GB for each chunk. We have implemented multiple re-tries to make sure that if a chunk fails the first time due to network issues, it will re-send that chunk until it succeeds. If after several re-tries, the chunk fails to tranfer to the...

We’ve pushed the backup performance envelope so that you don’t have to! VMware Backup Benchmarks have been around since 2007 and continue to be an important part of keeping data centers running smoothly.

Tune in to the next installment of our Google+ Hangout Virtual Vision series for a more in-depth discussion and lessons learned from a panel of experts on a best practice framework and performance benchmarks based on VMware’s vStorage APIs for Data Protection (VADP). We’ll show you how to protect 4 TB of virtual machine data an hour, and prove how easy this can be done with minimal hardware and a small budget.

Tune in and get your questions answered live by our expert panelists during the event by submitting your questions to the hashtag #SYMCHangout or Google+ events page.

Dear all

See below a summary of the UG meeting last week in Utrecht. It was a good interactive meeting.
We have received an update on the NBU 7.6 Product Roadmap update, got a glimpse at the new version of NBU 7.6 via Live Demo, an update on Appliances and integration with products such as Storage Foundation. Attached a summary of questions asked during the meeting, perhaps helpful for the broader community.

We will be meeting in October/November timeframe. Once a date has been confirmed you will be automatically notified via connect.
If you have any questions, comments feel free to contact us!

Kind regards,
Symantec User Group Team
