When I began learning AIX, I relied heavily on the AIX system administration tool called SMIT (GUI) or SMITTY (menu based). One of the great things about SMIT is when you "point and clicked" to create a user account, configure NFS, etc., SMIT displays the actual Unix commands being executed on the bottom of the SMIT window. This is how I learned the basics of the Unix command line. Over time I was able to do all of my administration from the command line interface (CLI) and not have to rely on SMIT. Understanding what commands were actually being run opened the door for me to write scripts that automated routine tasks, tweaked system performance, etc. etc.

Fortunately, there is a similar feature in NetBackup 7.x.

In order to see the command line operations being run by the Java Admin GUI, perform the following actions:

1. On the system where you are running the Java Admin GUI (likely the master server) go to the java directory.
# cd /usr/...

Hello Guys,

This post guides us through How to create a VMware Application Protection policy to back up the SharePoint Application in a Virtual Machine.

On the NetBackup Master Server

NetBackup Management > Right Click on Policies > Select New. Provide a name to the policy.

This would open up an “Add New Policy Window” dialog.

Choose Policy Type as VMware.

Select a Storage unit

NOTE – Enable Granular Recovery is disabled, as this type of policy is by default granular.

Add a new schedule as per your requirement.

IMPORTANT- Clients Tab

For VMware application aware backups, the name of the client cannot be entered manually or chosen from list of clients. It must be chosen using a VMware Intelligent Policy (VIP) query.

With the ever increasing usage of disk based backup solutions, one of the questions I get asked most often is around the future of tape. There is no doubt that disk offers many benefits over tape, not least restore performance and reliability, combined with some great technical advances like deduplication. That said, does tape still have a place in modern data protection?

Rarely a week passes when I don’t talk to a customer who wants to reduce their reliance on tape. The main challenges customers experience with tape are performance, especially when backing up lots of small files, restore speed, and also reliability issues caused by media volatility and drive failures. Add to that the cost of taking tapes off-site and cycling them back on site each day and it is little wonder many want to try and reduce their reliance on the technology.

Disk as a backup technology has been around for many years but, in recent years, has become almost a...

Application aware Virtual Machine (VM) backup is a new feature that has been added in Netbackup 7.5. It lets the user protect the applications installed inside the VM by a doing a single VM backup. This is s a tremendous feature considering the pace at which the enterprises are moving towards Virtualization.

But at times we may see the Application State Capture is failing. This means that the applications inside the VM are not protected during that backup and it is only protecting the VM. There are certain thing that we need to take care while using the feature of application aware backup.

The Application State Capture (ASC) job fails and the databases are not protected if you do any of the following:

  • Disable the Virtual Machine quiesce option.
  • Select the Exclude data disks option.

As long as there are any databases that can be protected, the ASC job continues. If you select databases for backup that exist on supported and on...

SharePoint Backup using NetBackup SharePoint Agent fails with status 2.

The SharePoint backup fails with status 2 mainly because of configuration issues. There is a checklist that we should adhere to while doing a SharePoint backup.

1. The NetBackup cilent service is being started by a domain account

2. The account running backup should have the following privileges.
-  ”Replace a process level token”
-  ”Debug programs”
-  ”Log on as a Service”
-  ”Allow to logon Locally”

These are set via (administrator tools – Local security policy – Local policies – User rights assignment)
This needs to be done for all servers in the SharePoint farm, including SQL back end.

3. The account should be Local administrator rights on all servers in the SharePoint farm.

4. .Net Framework 3.5 at minimum for SharePoint 2010 and  .Net...
