Symantec Invites Channel Partners to Participate in the Exclusive Backup Exec 2012 Partner Beta Program

Today, we’re announcing the availability of a partner-only beta release of Backup Exec 2012 and Backup Exec 2012 Small Business Edition.  Open exclusively to Symantec’s 60,000 global channel partners, the beta release will provide partners early access to one of Symantec’s market leading backup and recovery solutions.  Symantec wants to work with our partners to help customers fix the new challenges on controlling data growth, unifying virtual and physical platforms, and simplifying backup.

I know at least one of my many fans out there (the fan club membership has got to at least be numbering in the high twenties by now) has been anxiously awaiting this 2nd Backup Exec 2012 trailer/teaser. My #1 fan asked when I would be posting this follow-up and whether I would clarify if this new release would include cake (I could be confusing ‘cake’ with some SharePoint functionality, they are so easy to mix up). Obviously the when is now and the ‘cake’ question is ‘Yes’.

On that note, I was attending presentations all this week on many of the new features for the upcoming release and one that really appealed to my geek nature was on the updated command line...

New Beta for Backup Exec

(April 8th EDIT: The Beta cycle is now ending. Please see my First Availability blog here on how to get the gold code early)

A Beta program has started for Backup Exec but is ending soon and will then be moving into the RC (Release Candidate), phase. Only users already signed up for the Beta and active (i.e. providing feedback) will be invited to the RC phase where we support users installing it in production setups. Some of the new features include:

  • Deduplication performance improvement
  • Deduplication optimization for VMware specific backups
  • Exchange Virtual Vault for the Archive Option (makes recovering vaulted items much easier for end users)
