Schedule Update for the next releases of Backup Exec

We've been discussing this topic across a number of threads lately, so I thought I'd drop it here for all to see. The development team has been extremely focused on quailty enhancements, as reflected in the last Hotfix released February 20th. It's had over 20,000 downloads without logging a single traceable support event. Next up are two Service Packs, about to drop as beta code. Both are arriving at the same time; both are automatically delivered via the auto-update server when they reach General Availabilty and both apply to the software and the appliance. They are called: Backup Exec 2010 R3 SP3 Backup Exec 2012 SP2 The public beta release is in May and it represents the largest production-ready, white-glove, on-site testing activity that we have ever done. For more information or to join the nearly 2000 users that are already signed up, check out the...

    Your chance to be famous

Happy Friday Morning! It's coming up to 9.00 am here in California and so far it's turning out to be a beautiful day. The sky is blue, the sun is out in full force and the landscape around me is simply stunning.  One of the projects I am working on today is the creation of a Backup Exec show real and I wanted to give everyone the opportunity to be featured in this video is some shape or form. I am looking for statements and fun facts about Backup Exec in regards to what makes it special and standout against the competition. If you have an exhilarating, exciting, astonishing or incredible (you get the idea!) fact or story and would like to provide a quote, please get in touch with me. The top 3 responses as judged by my Product Marketing Director (Drew Meyer) will be featured in this video. To make you feel comfortable, I also wanted to let you know that we would never use your name, title or...

Symantec AutoSupport for Backup Appliances is now LIVE

Have you ever wondered if your appliance issues can be resolved even before they appear at your end? ( i.e a system that proactively monitors your appliances and automates issue resolution.)  Symantec is committed to simplifying and improving support experiences for its customers. Built on the service automation strategy, Symantec AutoSupport framework provides proactive and automated support services to its appliance customers. Starting February 4, Symantec Secure Operations Center ( SOC), an integral part of AutoSupport, began monitoring backup appliances all over the world, processing the alerts received from Symantec NetBackup and Backup Exec appliances, creating support tickets with field services for hardware related issues and Enterprise Support Services for non-hardware related issues. Symantec AutoSupport needs the CallHome functionality be enabled on the backup appliances and a registration of the appliance at the MyAppliance web portal (...

Symantec’s response to the “DCIG 2013 Virtual Server Backup Software Buyer’s Guide”

Last week DCIG published their annual Virtual Server Backup Software Buyer’s Guide, which featured a short write up of over 20 Backup and Recovery solutions and point products. In this guide, CommVault achieved the "Best-in-Class" ranking, NetBackup achieved “Recommended” ranking while Backup Exec 2012 received an “Excellent” ranking for Virtual Server Backup Software. It is important to note some facts: This “Guide” is created by an analyst firm DCIG and technology advisory firm, SMB Research. But, it is distributed EXCLUSIVELY by CommVault, not DCIG. When you visit DCIG’s website (http://www.dcig.com/free-dcig-downloads.html) and click on the title “DCIG 2011 Virtual Server Backup Software Buyer's Guide” it takes you to a CommVault webpage! As a...

Using a custom SQL instance with Backup Exec installs.

Oh, where do I start...it has been a little while since my last post, and that is primarily because I volunteered for a new role within our department. My role now allows me to focus 100% of my time on issues that matter to you, and that is exactly what I have been doing since the beginning of the year! It is an awesome opportunity for me (and my peers who joined me), so that you will ultimately reap the benefits of our labor. I can say that there have been many long nights and weekends invested so far, and I know that the final results will yield many satisfied customers. That means more to me than you will ever know! It is the sole reason I volunteered, and it is what motivates me every day. Thank you for being a loyal customer! So, part of my efforts recently led me to a topic which I have not covered before. That topic is using a custom SQL server instance with Backup Exec. We have supported it for many years now, but there are some impacts you should...

Backup Exec is doing AMAs on Reddit. Do you go to these? You really should.

Greetings Earthlings (well, most of you at least) After a great engagement in November, the Backup Exec team went back to Reddit for more last week. We lived through our first AMA and came out better people for it. The transcript from that event has been a topic of conversation in Engineering, Product Management and even in some executive leadership meetings.  We wanted to hear more, only this time, we were focusing on virtualization.  Since we wanted to narrow the focus a little bit, this is an AM(Almost)A because we had assembled some key creators of the Backup Exec virtualization strategy. The event was again a success.  We garnered roughly a 70% approval rating on over 200 votes.  All told, there were over...
