Ryan Scott, founder of Causecast and a contributor for Forbes, recently highlighted Symantec's commitment to skills-based employee volunteerism in his article below.

I’m always interested to see how companies are doubling down on their employee volunteering programs, and in the process reinventing the possibilities for what these programs can become.

Symantec is one of the companies out there that is applying a ton of passion and creativity to their program, and the results are fascinating. Their Symantec Service Corps program is an outstanding offshoot of their strong overall volunteer program, bringing together 10 employees from around the globe to provide pro bono consulting to NGOs in a specific region of the world.

For the 11th year, this October government, non-profits, the IT industry and local communities across the United States are coming together to celebrate National Cyber Security Awareness Month (NCSAM), a month-long celebration sponsored by the Department of Homeland Security, the National Cybersecurity Alliance and the Multi-State Information Sharing and Analysis Center to bring awareness to the latest developments in cybersecurity and the importance of ensuring all stakeholders are prepared to protect themselves and their businesses against the ever changing threats of our technology-driven world.

President Obama underlies the importance of this month in his...

Symantec’s fast-growing Appliance Solutions business unit recently executed a winning and environmentally responsible strategy to repurpose obsolete inventory and reduce infrastructure costs. Joining us to explain more is Kunal Karandikar, Manager Business Operations.

Hispanics are one of the largest, fastest growing and youngest minority populations in the United States. However, Hispanics are also one of the most underrepresented minority groups when looking at STEM careers and education.  According to the US Department of Education, “less than 2 percent of the STEM workforce is Hispanic while almost 20 percent of the country’s youth population is Hispanic”. Additionally, at school they are performing lower in STEM subjects and often are not receiving adequate exposure to the topic in K-12 classes.

This hits close to home for Symantec on two fronts.

We have a comprehensive talent strategy in place to promote and increase the diversity of our workforce and educate diverse communities on STEM through a variety of initiatives. HOLA, Symantec’s Hispanic Employee Resource Group, is committed to strengthening the Hispanic communitys’ interest in the STEM fields as...

September happens to be a unique month for Latinos. The 15th marks the anniversary of independence of five Latin American countries: Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua. Mexico and Chile also celebrate their independence in September, the 16th and the 18th respectively. It’s of no surprise why September 15th kicks off National Hispanic Heritage Month.

Here at Symantec, where diversity is embraced and networks encouraged, the Hispanic Outreach and Leadership Affinity group (HOLA) represents our Employee Resource Group (ERG) for Latinos.

Today, Symantec was recognized by the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) as a leader among S&P 500 companies for the depth and quality of the climate change data we disclosed through our 2014 CDP submission. This is the second year that Symantec has achieved CDP leadership status.

The CDP facilitates corporate management and reporting of greenhouse gas emissions and climate-related risks and opportunities at the request of 767 investors, representing more than $92 trillion in assets. The leadership index includes 63 S&P 500 companies – the top 10 percent for disclosure scores. We’re honored to be a part of this group.

Since the very beginning of our corporate responsibility journey, we have recognized that climate change is an important issue for Symantec, our stakeholders and our world.  Over the last several years, we have reduced our energy footprint,...

Symantec is known for protecting some of things we care most about. The lifeblood of countless businesses is dependent upon a reliable Symantec software package that is both cost-effective and safe. So it is no surprise that Symantec has stood up for the protection of life as we know it through the appropriate regulation of carbon. As an energy purchaser and forward thinking business, Symantec boldly joined the leadership class of companies in BICEP (Business for Innovative Climate & Energy Policy) back in 2009 and has stayed the course ever since. Most recently the company joined over 100 others in prudently supporting the Administration's Clean Power Plan to regulate carbon. The letter to the Obama Administration last June highlighted the economic case behind the new standard:

It reads in part:

Our support is firmly grounded in economic reality. We know that tackling climate change is one of America's great economic opportunities of the 21st...

As many of you know, opening the doors for women to thrive in STEM education and careers is a key focus for Symantec. Our work in this area is driven primarily through initiatives and partnerships managed by our Corporate Responsibility team, and supported by the volunteer efforts of thousands of employees worldwide. Our initiatives target females at all life and career stages as the challenge of increasing the number of female STEM professionals requires educating and supporting females at many points along their career development path from early education to professional career development.

As part of the Global Diversity and Inclusion team, I am involved in many of these initiatives and have the opportunity to see first-hand what a...

When your mission is to protect the world’s information there shouldn’t be categories of content that don’t receive equal treatment. And more importantly, when your company’s values clearly state a policy of diversity and inclusion there is no excuse for offering products that don’t align with those goals.

With GLAAD’s help, Symantec recently made a significant change to its web filtering software by eliminating the “sexual orientation” category. Symantec’s web content database is one of the largest of its kind, and maps the web across more than 100 categories and in dozens of languages. This update, which is in the process of being implemented at the product level, will mean that LGBT-related web content will be evaluated, categorized, and treated the same as other news, political and entertainment content.

"Let us recognize charity for what it is at heart: a noble enterprise aimed at bettering the human condition. On this International Day, I call on people everywhere to act on the charitable impulse that resides in every human being -- to start giving and to keep on giving.

Whatever the case, such generosity and kindness, with no expectation of financial gain, can make profound differences in human well-being."

Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon

Message for the International Day of Charity, 5 September 2014

Last week the world celebrated the life of one of our most remembered philanthropic leaders, Mother Theresa. Designated by the United Nations as International Day of Charity, each year on September 5th, the anniversary of the passing of Mother Theresa, the UN asks the world to recognize and...
